Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

It always amazes me when you quote Rand to leftists that they sneer dismissively “She was nuts”, or “She was a bad writer” or “She was a hypocrite because she collected social security in her old age”, but never ackowledge that many of her predictions were spot on. Meanwhile, they worship at the altar of AGW, even though NONE of their predictions have come true.
And how does Canada differ?
Our govt has promised services.. healthcare, old age pension, EI,
The money has been extracted from taxpayers, for decades..
The services are not being provided, the bureaucrats state we lack funding, personel and political will. That we are not taking enough taxes to pay for these promises.
Govt is in breach of contract.
They took the money, now cannot/will not provide promised goods.
Yet all these bureaucrats demand we, the tax payer honour the promises they made to reward themselves.
After spending public wealth into debt and attacking the producing members of society, our beauties of the bureaucracy tell us the country is broke. And that we owe them a pension.
Works for me. NOT.
Detroit, Stockton are the future of Liberal Kleptocracies, I include the so called Conservatives in this group.
True, someone have been stashing all this cash somewhere.
Oh, China built an aircraft carrier…
India is the world’s largest importer of gold…
What would that mean, hmm?
Re Rand.
She’s been a mole, a plant. She promoted selfishness. That means living to one’s desires. That means not having kids. And now we are being overrun with muslim families with their average 8 children per wife.
Winnipeg is a lot like Detroit.
“Didn’t Obama give Detroit a huge shot in the arm by keeping General Motors afloat, where the Republicans would have let it fold? Capitalism did fail & was only rescued by the State.”
Unfortunately, there are far too many comments like this at the link.
The U.S.is truly f***ed when people start to believe in the almighty State and look to it as their saviour.
Don’t be fooled; turning every town into Starnesville is not an unintended consequence of this administration’s policies, it IS the policy.
…And how does Canada differ?”
If you had asked me that question as recently as 4 or 5 years ago, I would have said that the average Yank was different from the average Canuck because he would (a) admit there was a problem, and (b)not tolerate the state of affairs.
But now, I really don’t see any difference. Cowardice, selfishness, and stupidity on both sides of The Border.
She’s been a mole, a plant. She promoted selfishness.
Rand, like Marx, identified many of the symptoms plaguing society. But, also like Marx, Rand had no use for religion and was wrong on the diagnosis and treatment. She was prescient, but her philosophy of objectivism was rooted in the self and her basic attitude was “Screw those who made need help!” failing to draw a distinction between willful charity for the truly needy and leech-like welfare dependents.
There is a problem with that ideology as well.
There is a truism with Sky Diving, understandably the most safety conscious people in the sporting world. If you arrive to jump at a drop zone with a smell of alcohol on your breath or seem to be less than with it on that day you will not be allowed to jump.
These people enjoy the thrill of a real daredevil experience, not the reality show experience. They can party but never at the time of a jump or the night before. Common sense and constant checking of each others safety equipment is the rule.
However now the truism; you have no friends below five thousand feet, there is no time to untangle another’s tangled cords or other equipment problem. Making such a decision just means two people die not one.
So Amy P. if you were unable to grasp the theme of self reliance behind Ayn Rand’s writing read Atlas Shrugged again. Oh wait! have you read the book a first time or just going on things other people told you to think.
By the way how’s that evolutionary “survival of the fittest” foundation thinking. After all Charles Darwin did become a Lamarckian before passing to the next whatever. What you have never heard of the Lamarckian? Tsk! Tsk! Cheers;
John Robertson said: “and how does Canada differ?”
Been to Hamilton lately? We don’t differ by much, except in Hamilton most of the mooks are white.
My ex, that I still maintain friendship with, has recently taken some odd jobs in the various government bureaucracies. Although never interested in politics, she now wants “That Man”, AKA Harper, out! She would much rather work for $28/hr. than $11/hr. As a man without a job at present, I may soon be happy to get $11/hr. (Anybody need an outstanding piece of electronic engineering?)
I guess she got these ideas from co-workers. So typical of the Public Sector Union Worker. The state is there to serve them, not they serve the public. Pas de servir, mais de s’en servir
We will go the Detroit Way if we do not do the Wisconsin Thing. Time to end the unelected bureaucracy’s strangle hold on our government and welfare.
However, there is a plus side to this new-found interest. She’s being reading about Detroit and is completely astonished, as we all are. An ideological opportunity, I think (BTW I am Libertarian but have common cause with social and “economic” conservatives).

The same thing is true of SCUBA diving.
Interestingly, both sports have limited air time 🙂
One of the reasons for the Civil War, was not so much freeing the slaves, as it was giving the vote to blacks. Southerners were afraid of the population disparities in some areas. They were afraid of losing control of everything. Looking at Chicago, Detroit, perhaps Washington, I guess they were right.
Regarding the claim “She was a hypocrite because she collected social security in her old age”:
She would only have been a hypocrite if she hadn’t paid her premiums into it. The same goes for any government program. While most of them should be wound up in an orderly fashion over time, if you’ve paid a ton of money and some reward has been promised, there is no reason to become a martyr.
It’s typical of the leftist parasites to require us all to foot the bill for them but to raise a stink when we collect what their own coercive programs have promised.
“Selfishness” in the Ayn Rand parlance means, “concern with one’s own interests”. That means working productively and then trading with others on a voluntary basis for mutual benefit. What it does not mean is sacrificing others to oneself.
You can read more about this in her compilation The Virtue of Selfishness. In fact you can merely read the book’s introduction to find her discussion of the definition “concern with one’s own interests”.
Rand always drew the proper distinction between the truly needy and leeches. But in at least one spot she said she regarded many people on welfare as victims, since the politicians were implementing policies that killed jobs and hampered the productive, thus making it more difficult for everyone.
So, in other words, contrary to your own conclusion, she was bang on in her “diagnosis and treatment” of the symptoms plaguing society.
Thank you nv53 for your reply to the statists. Ayn Rand was bang on. It is not selfish to prefer not to have your hard earned money confiscated by the state to be redistributed to those who live as leeches on society. It is far better to be able to support the charities of your choice and to be able to choose to help someone truly in need instead of societal leeches.
