Texas gov. signs ‘Merry Christmas’ bill into law
“I realize it’s only June. But it’s a good June and the holidays are coming early this year,” Perry said. “It’s a shame that a bill like this one I’m signing today is even required, but I’m glad that we’re standing up for religious freedom in this state. Religious freedom does not mean freedom from religion.”

Coming soon….to a province near you?
No, eh?
Delighted to hear it…
MERRY CHRISTMAS and yes we can still shoot straight!
Beer and steaks from happy cows on the BBQ, for Father’s Day.
Cheers

Good for Gov. Perry.
Texas has become a political enigma – part of the time they produse the nation’s most draconian and kleptocratic laws and goon squad enforcement locally then there are many bright points like this that lead the nation in liberty reform. Hard to figure what goes on there – best I can come up with is the sate legislature seems libertarian/populist most of the time but many local town/city/country councils are fascist-progressives.
Seems like a good move, but, heck, I still call 1 July “Dominion Day”
And here I thought “religious freedom” only applied to Atheists, Warmists and Muslims…go figure…
This smells of a violation of the separation of Church and State. I don’t like it. I don’t even like having Christmas celebration in school. They should be working and we should separate state and education.
LAS, you do understand that the whole thing about the church and the state was to keep the State out of the Church (i.e. Church of England, monarchy as head of church…) not the Church out of the State.
LAS
Yeah well, I’m all busted up that you don’t approve of this Texas statute….(sarc)
Suck it up buttercup….this means you and your ilk can no longer impose your views standards on others….if ya don’t wanna say Merry Christmas…..really Charlotte we don’t give a…….
The COLD WAR is over and yer side lost.
Remember the Alamo!
(and don’t mess with Texas)
Actually lance it was both.
this means you and your ilk can no longer impose your views standards on others
Oh the lack of self-awareness…the persecution complex.
You’re wrong, LAS. Wrong about the wall between gov’t and religion, about my religious beliefs, and wrong about my level of self-awareness.
So LAS is upset that in Texas it is now illegal to deny somebody the right to say Merry Christmas, but it is all right for it to impose its views on us with no rebuttal? G-d,the stupid burns.
// Religious freedom does not mean freedom from religion. //
Well, we knew that, didn’t we?
The first thing they ask you when you arrive at some of these smaller southern centres is
“What church do you go to?”
There are people who take a drive every Sunday morning, pretending to go to church.
Madison wrote,[31] and he declared, “practical distinction between Religion and Civil Government is essential to the purity of both, and as guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Separation_of_church_and_state#cite_note-32
I am right and you are out of your depth lance. So embarrassing.
I have yet to hear of a single instance of someone getting taken to court over saying ‘Merry Christmas’. The War on Christmas BS is just another spoke in the persecution complex of the conservative culture warrior.
How cute!
Hey LAS, that Constitution that Madison cited in the _single_ reference on that page you link to, what exactly does that Constitution say about government being involved with religion? Now, what exactly does that Constitution say about religion being involved with gov’t?
As far as the latter part of your comment, I’d reference you to Ashu Solo in Saskatoon, you can google it.
I’d also recommend, you know, reading the article, because it explicitly states the bills sponser forwarded the bill because his son’s school was worried about litigation.
“I am right and you are out of your depth lance. So embarrassing.” – LAS
Oh god, the insanity.
We need a complete reboot of society. Bring on the collapse, pleease.
LAS (LIEberals Are Shrill) is just sore cause there is no official Atheist/Agnostic day; or whatever it is they celebrate, besides trying to eliminate Judeo-Christian festivals from the public square.
Maybe they should establish a Nothingness Day; and they could then just shut up.
If you don’t want to celebrate Hannukah or Christmas then stay home nurse a drink in front of the fire and get all ‘Scroogy’; the rest of us will party on.
Cheers

When I lived in South Korea, a country whose Buddhist and Confucian past is still very visible and tangible, I was asked what church I went to. I had no problem with it. I celebrated Halloween and Christmas there with my students (I taught ESL). Their parents and my adult students never raised any objections and some even participated in some degree. Buddhists wished me a happy Christmas and I wished them well on Buddha’s birthday and Chusok (Korean thanksgiving holiday). A country with an ethnically homogenous population had more civic maturity than the New World. I’m glad that Texas is keen on Christmas. I just wish the twits whose idea of a good time is ruining kids’ Christmas pageants didn’t make a big deal about Christmas otherwise this law would not have been necessary.
God bless us, everyone.
Who in their wildest dreams would have thought there would ever be a legal risk in saying Merry Christmas ? (down LAS, down). It was never a forced issue and all were free to ignore it if they chose to. And then it offended someone who should have been told to shut up and go away.(down LAS, eeasy) The fact that this stupidity even makes it to the Justice Dept. is tribute to the lack of common sense in some of the highest offices in the land. These are traditions dating back hundreds of years and no one is forced to participate. By the same token no one should be allowed to mess with either the religious or commercial aspect of this special occasion, although all are free to ignore it. That’s Democracy and God bless Texas.
Personally, that fatsonofabitch costs me more every year and if I ever catch him on my roof I’m gonna blow him away. But that’s just me. Others don’t mind. Democracy. Merry belated Christmas LAS.
Las, it is the Right AND the Role of the Church to influence the Government and laws of the land. What do you think brings stability to the Nation of Canada.
Try looking up the “Oh Canada” http://www.metrolyrics.com/o-canada-lyrics-the-national-anthem-of-canada.html and tell me that that is not as much a prayer as it is a song?
Your ignorance is astounding as to the foundations of this great Nation as well as the USA. The jackboots are trying to tear down the walls of this country, and you are one of their puppets. The brilliance of the US Founding Fathers was that they came from tyranny and left Jolly olde England because of the persecution from the State to not allow them the freedom to be more responsible as free citizens to worship God as they saw fit, not have government laws and regulations imposed on them as to how and when and where and why they could express their Faith.
This is the brilliance also, of what Rick Perry has just brought under this new legislation. People have the freedom to express their love and devotion to their Creator by celebrating at a given time for a given purpose, (albeit up for some serious debate as to its accuracy to the actual date…but that is a for another thread) the Celebration of the Birth of Jesus the Christ from Nazareth. Being a Judeo/Christian Society, there needs to be room for that majority of Society to have the freedom to celebrate as they see fit.
We WILL influence and shape the laws of the land, because the lawless are taking over and the society is deteriorating and becoming more unstable. Take the Christians out of politics and you have Socialists and Sharia. Ask those from those countries how that is working for them…do some reading! Go shake some hands of those from those nations. They will tell you how wonderful this nation is.
That a Law like this has to be passed is outrageous in itself.
You can bet there will be no need to pass one for Ramadan.
This is just more evidence the people like Las, are at war with just one Religion, Christianity.
Between Atheists & gays, there is no end to their vilification of our traditions. None towards any who would kill us all.
Not a peep against Islam.
The persecution complex runs deep in these comments…
I feel that, at least where I’m from, Christmas is a holiday that transcends religion. At least 90% of people I know celebrate it, and most do as a family holiday rather than a religious one. It’s just become such an important part of our culture that it’s downright silly to be offended by it.
Now cancelling Halloween or something I do have a problem with, but Christmas is fine by me.
