Life is cheap, at times, in Russia, and so is the vodka, which in combination can make just about anything seem like a good idea. For example, if you throw together a small motor, some steel tubing, a bicycle chain…

I notice that they barely strayed out of “ground effect.”
Ted Cruz is a big meanie, with all his stupid facts and arguments and Bill of Rights and Words Meaning Stuff and stuff. Dianne Feinstein, like, “comes from a place” where she feels really strongly that he’s not being nice to her. She’s actually seen real live dead bodies!, which counts as being “up close and personal to the Constitution”.

Some of the comments on that video are too stupid for words…..especially that dolt, ZekaZMD who says he would rather live in the “truly free post soviet country” than the U.S.
Where do these idiots come from? That freak would last five minutes in a “truly free post soviet country”. Man there are some stupid people.
Now that was really neat; I’ve got to have one of those. Beats my little RC helicopters that I fly around the house.
I suspect that if one built one of those and flew it around in Canada, there would be all sorts of statist morons that would descend to block someone from enjoying a bit of time in the air. I can think of lots of uses for a small helicopter like this and will look up whether they come as kits of parts or whether it’s just good old-fashioned vodka fueled Russian ingenuity and scrap metal that has been lying around. Not sure that steel would be the best structural material for these units and wonder if Boeing surplus still has fairly cheaply priced left over aircraft titanium bits?
Anyone know if there are people flying these in Canada?
As far as ground effect goes, what I’ve found with my small RC copters is that it takes far more power to hover a foot above the ground than to fly above the ground effect. Have broken a few rotors when was first getting used to the controls and, once the RC copter starts to ascend then it often smashes into the ceiling with less power than it took to just make it hover. Anyone know if the same thing holds for a man-sized helicopter?
Sounds like they’re using snowmobile engines? Two strokes anyhow.

I assumed it was fear keeping them low.

Thanks for the link. It’s always a bit disturbing when there’s no price given. What was even more disturbing was the line:
No part of this publication may be copied or distributed, transmitted, transcribed, stored in a retrieval system,
That makes me very suspicious about the whole thing. At no point did they indicate that one is to turn off the web browser cache which would be necessary to fulfill the conditions of their prohibition against storage in a retrievel system restriction. Also, they didn’t indicate that one is to not utilize a wireless or wired router to view their pages as this will result in a transmission of the page from the router to the computer. Also, if someone doesn’t have a printer, they’re prohibited from making notes from the page.
With restrictions like this, I think I’ll look for a Russian source for a lightweight helicopter.

“Major Snowstorm to Slam Russia and Central, Eastern Europe”
“A major winter storm was organizing Thursday over southeastern Europe.
Residents from the western Balkan Peninsula to the Russian heartland were bracing for heavy, even crippling snowfall beginning Thursday night and continuing into Friday.
The capital cities of Sarajevo, Budapest to Minsk and Moscow were all in line for a major, potentially historic snowfall, given the mid-March timing.”

“Snow strands thousands overnight in cars in Hungary”
“Rescue officials said wind gusts of up to 100 kph (62 mph) and trucks jackknifed across the M1 highway between Budapest and Vienna led to the traffic jams. On Friday, rescuers cut across guardrails to allow vehicles to leave the jammed highway on makeshift roads.
Snowdrifts up to 3 meters (10 feet) high and the violent gusts blocked off major roads across the country and the storm also left more than 100,000 people without electricity. Some 5,700 cars were stranded on the roads while 18 trains were stuck between stations, the Disaster Management Agency said.”

The point of the Russian home-made civilian helicopters that stands out for me is the fact that we could never do this here – too illegal – civilians can’t be trusted with this type of mobility – my God man, the regulations! – doing a garage/barn project like this woud take reams of permission from a litany of regulators – you’d be inviting attacks from police and bureaucrats.
In matters of personal freedom Russia has become much freer than Canada/US.
ChrisinMB…thanks for the tip regarding comments on Youtube videos. But you see, I often read comments at various and sundry sites that I visit just to see how stupid some people can really be. As Sun Tzu said “To know your Enemy, you must become your Enemy.”
We have to know how these people “think” because it will tell us how they are going to act.

Occam, a question for you. What makes you think that the Russian gentleman is legally flying his helicopter? Lots of illegal things are posted on youtube everyday.
Here’s a how to if you want to build your own helicopter
a) buy a large farm in the country.
b) be nice to your neighbours
c) build whatever you want in your workshop
d) fly it, staying out of ‘aerodrome controlled airspace’ I think the term is, ie not around a big airport with air traffic control where someone official will report you
e) as long as your neighbours don’t report you (see step b) how is the DoT to know and since you’re unlicenced they can’t revoke anything anyways, so enjoy
f) Do remember that there is no such thing as a gliding helicopter.
Here’s a link to a Transport Canada publication dealing with helicopter safety. Read and note how many fatalities occur each year with trained people in properly engineered and tested helicopters.
http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviation/publications/tp185-menu-5395.htm
If you want to build your own helicopter anyways. consider this – if the helicopter has a rotor speed of 450mph and is moving at 50mph then the advancing blade has an effective airspeed of 500mph (450+50) while the retreating blade has an effective airspeed of 400mph (450-50). Therefore the advancing blade must have a flatter angle of attack than the retreating blade to balance the lift, and this angle must change commensurate with airspeed and direction of flight since helicopters fly backwards and sideways. Have fun figuring out how to bias the swashplate correctly. Also have fun figuring out the minimum and maximum rotor speeds – too slow and the blades stall and you die, too fast the blade tips go supersonic and you die, touch the blades on a tree, you die. Hit someone in the head with a blade they die. Experience blade harmonics, imbalance or icing, you die. If the chain or shaft drive to the tail rotor (anti-torque rotor is the correct term) fails you probably die.

These are excellent points, Al. The question that comes to my mind is, do I want to be suspended above the ground in something -I- made?
Now, I’ve constructed a race car and repaired/modified quite a few others. What I learned from my race car is that sometimes things which one would think were unbreakable can sometimes break. Without warning. When those kinds of things break in your steering linkage, life gets very exciting very quickly.
So the answer to the question above, for me, is no. I’d be stoked to build a robot airplane or chopper, but I ain’t going to ride in it.
One more important safety tip for bodgers: don’t be doing your test drive on a public street. Voice of experience.

The CBC has hit the ground running with the Penashue ‘scandal’. It is a featured story with a half-dozen related stories. I’m OK with that, our election finance laws are there so everyone has a level playing field. They are necessary to ensure fairness.
However, what ticks me off,is that 9 months ago the NDP paid back close to $350,000 in inelgible donations ,largely from the unions ,including the union that the CBC employees are members, and they buried the story. When I clicked on the article a couple of hours ago, there was only one comment that mentioned this overt hypocrisy,it has since been removed by the CBC.
