The death toll from the bloody terrorist siege at a natural gas plant in the Sahara climbed to at least 81 on Sunday as Algerian forces searching the complex for explosives found dozens more bodies, many so badly disfigured they could not immediately be identified, a security official said.
An account from a survivor.
Is it just me who thinks this story being massively underplayed in the news cycle?

“Is it just me who thinks this story(sic) being massively underplayed in the news cycle?
Nope. This AM I scoured every radio station I could get on the radion and on satellite. The only ones I heard mention anything about this was 880 AM in Edmonton, and Sun on satellite.
Reminds me of Waco.
There’s that “Smart Power” unintended consequence thing again.
Time for another Shrillary do nothing “Reset” button photo op.
Now if it were a wind or solar farm, the media would be all over it.
I am not trying to sound facetious. I honestly think that since the msm has been aboard the anti-oil train, reporting this story broadly would partly destroy their narrative. Not only that, the msm believes they can change the way of thinking of extremist muslims by being nice. Would it be “nice” if the msm aired your dirty laundry for all to see?
On the other hand, maybe the editors of the msm just haven’t had enough time yet to twist the story to their liking.
“The Algerian security official said the 25 bodies found by bombs squads on Sunday were so badly disfigured that it was difficult to tell whether they were hostages or attackers.”
Sounds like the martyrs had some Muslim fun before the jig was up.
Of course it’s being underplayed, it’s not like any of the Americans killed are someone important like an Ambassador….
it ain’t impotent like Idle-Sum-Moreorless, is it????
The LSM like HufPo were all over this with banner headlines, and it’s still near the top of their list.
This is jut another example of what terrorists do, so what?
I don’t watch CBC or CTV so can’t comment, but FOX, CNN and SUN News all have it.
The Great Silence is from His Majesty, Barack Obama. Not a word, not a whisper from Him. After all, in His mind, he’s conquered Al Qaeda. It doesn’t exist anymore. So there.
Another event not worthy of mention in the MSM: Gun Appreciation Day.
Hundreds of Second Amendment supporters converged on State Capitols, openly carrying arms in those States permitting open carry, for peaceful rallies in support of Second Amendment rights. All over the country, not just one or two states in Flyover Country.
Of course it’s underplayed,
For starters you need to confront the fact that Al Qaeda is not finished as Obamba proclaimed during the presidential debates “Al Qaeda’s core leadership has been decimated”.
Then you need to recognize the fact that Obamba provided the heavy arms and Al Qaeda terrorists from Libya’s armories and jails that he liberated. Now “they” specifically Al Qaeda terrorize a swath across the MENA. This cannot be an oversight by the UN/ NATO/ EU and American intelligence agencies. Conservative voices and Israel said this would happen well before they Liberated Al Qaeda.
That said Islamic terrorism has always been a part of Algeria, it is the Obamba backed faction Al Qaeda that is new to Algeria in this case, and the fact that it’s comes as a reprimand from Al Qaeda for western interference in Mali.
In other words someone broke a deal, and Al Qaeda slapped their pee pee’s in a “No Touch Zone”.
There are many US and particularly EU interests in Algeria, mostly petroleum based but telecommunications and other industries as well.
France has the biggest stake as a former colonial power, and the biggest risks, first to its economic ties and the fact that millions of Algerian Muslims now occupy Frances sovereign territory.
This is a BIG mess that many different western powers want to go away from the public’s scrutiny for many different reasons.
This morning on Fox Sunday, an advisor for the president said they were going to wait for the state department to get them information. My immediate answer to that statement was simple, “You mean the same clowns who are still going to report on Benghazi?”
This will never end with Obama-may peace be upon him.
Odd I am seeing this story all over the place.
The “media party’ wouldn’t want to throw a wet blanket on Barry’s inaugural redux or “my bell’s” new bangs,,,,Those two stories MUST dominate for the next two weeks!!!
Why would anyone think that the “media party”, would view what happened in Algeria as a story of any significance, when, after all, an Ambassador was murdered during a presidential campagain, and received barely a breath of air time, or an inch of print column.
It’s simple. There are no 5 star hotels for our sophisticated ‘reporters’ to sleep in.
Odd I’m seeing this story all over the place.
Would you like to elaborate, LAS? Like, furnish a few links?
this detail is kind of important. Terrorists with perfect English Accents

“Odd I’m seeing this story all over the place.” – LAS
You need to give LAS a little break; he’s sort of the village idiot around here and can’t distinguish between most realities including terms like “underplayed” verses “not played at all”.
Best to just leave him drool and tantrum in the corner, when you can stomach it of course.
I got a charge out of obama’s surrogates leaking a statement that “Netanyahu does not know what is good for Israel” which is to say Netanyahu does not understand how the Middle East works, and obama, with his “smart diplomancy” does. obama’s arrogance and ignorance have not caught up with him but it sure has caught up to a lot of other people who paid for obama’s ignorance and arrogance with their lives.
Justtinkin, exactly. Why should the MSM report on the stunt their friends pulled.
Weren’t we told last November by The One that Al Qaeda was finished?
There is also the possibility that Obamba’s newly liberated Libyan Al Qaeda crew attacked the Algerian “No touch Zone’ to draw undecided western countries into an expanded war in Mali and possibly other African nations.
A False Flag if you will.
Canada’s well reasoned indecision about Mali intervention is a prime example. There are plenty of Canadian business interests in Algeria, along with Frances public insistence on Canadian military aid.
Just thow’n it out there.
Muslims did this.
Good morning.
That information seems to be lacking from the news links.
I’m confused, aren’t we supposed to refer to these people as insurgents?
…Is it just me who thinks this story being massively underplayed in the news cycle?
If they could blame it on a man who made an anti-Islam movie, it would be all over the news, but they already used that fake excuse recently…
it seems they have run out of made up excuses, so their friends in the media do what they can to help…
Here we go… “we’ve come in the name of islam to teach americans what islam is”
http://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2013/01/algerian-terrorists-told-hostages-weve-come-in-the-name-of-islam-to-teach-americans-what-islam-is/
A correction to ET’s statement His Majesty Obama. Should read Her Majesty Barrack Obama, he has more female genes than male. On another note like I said, deport all Moslem’s that you can legally deport. Ban outright all Moslem Immigration. End all funding for Multicult and BS Diversity farting and tap dancing festivals. Absolutely no blood and treasure expended for any Moslem Murder Cult country, were the beheading, throat slitting, stonings, bombings, genital mutilations are going on. Arm all their women with colt 1911’s so they can obtain their own equal rights.
It seems The Telegraph is sticking to its story that the moderate muslims working in the gas plant switched sides when the less than moderate muslims entered into the fenced off perimeter.

To trust a Muslim in conflict with another Muslim is insane.
In other words someone broke a deal, and Al Qaeda slapped their pee pee’s in a “No Touch Zone”.
I wonder whether this is in some way connected to the Benghazi Murders and what the CIA were doing there. Were “Goods” being supplied? Something about this does not have the right feel to it….darn I’m trying to use reason and logic when thinking about the Head Choppers. Slaughtering humans with what they do & slaughtering more is better than slaughtering. There it’s all square in my head now.
On Friday, security sources cited by Algérie-Focus news website said several “foreigners” were among the kidnappers, including one from Canada, but also from Egypt, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Libya….

“I’m confused, aren’t we supposed to refer to these people as insurgents?”
No, actually I think you are supposed to refer to these people as “Youths”.
Although I believe its better received by the Liberal Left when you add downtrodden prefix’s such as “disaffected youth” or “disenfranchised youth”.
Wait and see over the next few months when their families in France take to the streets over this, it’ll definitely be a “youth” problem.
The story has been featured on both CTV and CBC.
The MSM and Governments probably knew how many lives were at stake, so they were keeping their heads down, eyes open and mouths shut…or they were down at the bar having martini’s and getting plastered like usual.
From one of the related stories:
At times like this, it’s important for all of us to remember one of the key mantras of Leftists everywhere: “All cultures are equal and you mustn’t judge or look down upon any of them. For if you do so then you are a racist.”
The fact that Leftists can read such stories and still come away as hating Western conservatives and excusing Muslim terrorists is a riddle that even the world’s top psychologists will never been able to figure out.
The media is too busy pimping the “guns are bad” hysteria to cover stories that remind us firearms have a vital defensive purpose in a worl filled with maniacal brigands and sundry cut throats who would love to slake their hatred of the civilized western world.
Channel surfing last evening at 11:00 p.m., I happened to catch CTV National News with Sandie Rinaldo, where the story led off.
It was reported by Daniele Hamamdjian, who did a pretty serious job, given the constraints under which she apparently has to operate — based somewhere in southern Canada (she looked great in matching Tam and wool coat), not allowed to say, you know, the words, “Muslim” or “Islamist”, or anything remotely resembling any of that, etc., etc. After all, Bell Media wouldn’t want her straying too far off the farm again by suggesting anything like she’d been greeted at the landing strip by the, er, Chief’s Escalade and driver.
So the essence of what Sandie delivered was: “Look how terribly misbehaved everyone over there is; but we’re happy, because we have HOCKEY!!!!” And the second story was about the NHL, whatever that means anymore…
Unfortunately, the perspective that you and I share on this subject has virtually no currency at the moment — help to build them to the point (and then offer support) where they can make meaningful decisions of value to themselves, their families and their societies. That’s all been replaced by approximate remote-control gunslinging — in short, everything that the left has always accused the right of advocating (or having a “hidden agenda” about).
This story hasn’t been covered in any of the football games today. For the record I am staying away from any news coverage until the anointed one if finished ascending to the throne tomorrow.
How many innocent people have been killed by drones sent by the USA plus wiping out different Middle East govts. in the past 4 – 5 years. This picture should make us all nervous in North America.
What is going on? Oh no of course the enemy won’t find there way over here.
David Southam – thanks for your comment!
Paging Eeben Barlow
Yes, of course it’s being underplayed. The reasons why aren’t hard to understand: it makes Islam and Arabs look bad, it exposes the savage bloodthirsty sadistic violence so rampant in the Islamic heartland, it reminds anti-colonialists of the failure of a revolutionary third world nation independent for 50 years now, and it exposes the pathologies of Arab culture in a context that cannot be tied to Israel. And how could I forget, right now there’s a possibility that coverage could make Obama look bad. Does that about cover it as regards American and Canadian media?
But this is Algeria, a very special situation that I actually know something about. I lived in France for a couple of years and have talked to many Algerians and ex-Algerians of all types (in both France and Canada). Here’s the situation in a nutshell — the militant Islamist rebel forces in Algeria are heavily penetrated by the agents of the Algerian state intelligence agency. In fact, penetration is putting it mildly; often, the entire effective leadership of these groups is directed by the secret police, an agency usually known by its French initials DRS (Département du Renseignement et de la Sécurité).
The standard strategy of the DRS is to lead the rebels into fanatical murderous attacks that cause them to lose popularity with the Algerian masses. It’s the Soviet method of penetration and provocation, used by the KGB in places like Chechnya. It’s how the Algerian regime dealt with its 1990s conflict with the GIA (Groupes islamiques armées), inducing horrific mass murder attacks on villages where opposition to the government was strong.
The Algerian ruling elite is formed largely of army generals who were originally trained by the French, and fought with the French in the Algerian civil war of the 1950s and 60s until it became clear that De Gaulle was going to pull out — at which point they crossed over to the rebel side. They and their families generally speak French among themselves, send their children to school in France, and have little in common with most Algerians.
The Algerian state is largely funded by resource revenues extracted by foreign companies, mostly French. Lots of these revenues go straight into the bank accounts of the Algerian elite. So, connect the dots. This “rebel attack” on the gas plant is probably led by agents of the DRS. It may be part of an effort to extract higher payments from the gas consortium. Its primary cause is likely a struggle for money among factions of the Algerian ruling group. This situation is well understood by people familiar with Algeria, and is actually alluded to fairly regularly in French-language media — although the reader needs background knowledge to get the allusions.
I’m thinking that this is a really nice distraction for Shillary’s testimony this coming Wednesday – which I’m still not convinced will happen – she will surely come up with some post-brain-trauma amnesia.
“They won’t really know how many were slaughtered until the cast of Monty Python is done with “bring out your dead”.
Back in the day, Royal Dutch Shell and the Indonesians had a similar threat. The Indonesians looked t’other way while Shell set up a de facto private army…..
The communists left Shell and it’s facilities alone and the Indonesians did need to deploy resources to secure the oil industry.
Algeria seeks to maintain a monololy on para-military power….knowing full well that such as Haliburtan or Black Water would show them up.
I just wanna know exactly how “canadian” were the alleged “canadians”?
the bear >
“I just wanna know exactly how “canadian” were the alleged “canadians”?”
According to the Liberal Left EVERYBODY is a Canadian, some are just waiting for their passports and welfare checks a little longer than others.
aha- so they were CIPO’s! Canadians in Passport Only!
the bear >
When I was a permanent resident in Algeria, I had a couple of Algerian locals mock the “Canadian passport system” to my face. They wanted me to sponsor them to come to Canada. They wanted to go to Montreal, and I told them I couldn’t do that because I’m from Alberta. They laughed at the notion and said it didn’t matter, they knew people who could make it work once they got their foot in the door.
I of course said, no and that it’s very difficult to get into Canada and that I wouldn’t take on sponsorship liabilities for anyone not residing close by. Truth is I’d never have sponsored them regardless. (In fact when I left 3 months after 911 for good, I left one of the fellows immigration application parcels on my office desk that he wanted me to post from in Canada).
Anyway their scoffing remarks to my rebuttal were:
Quote – “Everyone knows a Canadian Passport is worth $10,000.00 US dollars, nothing more” – Unquote.
They of course didn’t have the 10,000USD for whoever it is that facilitates a Canadian passport from Third World countries that are known to breed Islamic terrorists.
Fox coverage was very good and, hold onto your hats, I thought that English Language Al Jazeera did the best job of all. Muslims killing Muslims, so they had no particular axe to gring.
dearest kate,
declaration of war is a long and involved process – with good reason – but you are not the only one who thinks this is underplayed in the mainsteam (waiting for the asteroid) media.
