While reading various articles about the champagne & caviar E-Lovefest going on in Durban, I came across a number of entries from a particular Toronto resident. His latest is a letter to the Toronto Red Star. Here it is in full:
Re: Tories ready to abandon Kyoto deal, Nov. 29
I was at Copenhagen and I resent Environment Minister Peter Kent putting such misleading “spins” on critical matters. Elizabeth May counters with the truth:
1) Kyoto does include 191 countries. Only the U.S. is outside.
2) Most of the industrialized countries have met or exceeded their Kyoto targets. Canada is the only country to have repudiated its legally binding obligations.
3) The Copenhagen Accord, which Kent touts, is merely political “spin.” The non-binding pledges will lead to far more than 2 degrees C global warming with disastrous consequences for our grandchildren.
4) Canada is the first country to refuse to enter negotiations for a second Kyoto commitment, and the only country to ignore its legally binding Kyoto targets.
Most Canadians want our country to remain in Kyoto yet our government/oil corporations apparently plan to withdraw. Unless he changes very quickly, Stephen Harper’s climate legacy will be a wasted world for future generations.
Anthony Ketchum, Toronto
I know I’m just an ignorant Western hick but the hairs on the back of my red neck were tweaked while reading through Tony 4 “truths”. Would any SDA fact checkers care to shed some light on his statements?
Incidentally, Mr. Ketchum’s blog can be found here and more from him can be read/seen here and here. The latter link, a video, shows what an absolutely angry, totalitarian Leftist thug he truly is. To realize that this elderly man has gained little to no wisdom in his lifetime but instead based his entire worldview on a pack of lies is beyond sad.

Sorry Robert, I won’t even give the leftoid the satisfaction of seeing an increase in traffic to his blog by going there. The fact that he writes to (or for, no difference) the Red Star is enough for me. It’s like watching any more interviews with occupiers in the faint hope that someone will say something intelligent. It an exercise in futility.
I think only 82 countries actually signed Kyoto:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Kyoto_Protocol_signatories
Number One on the response to mister Ketchum is one fact that eludes most “pro-kyoto” canadians – namely that the environmentally gluttonous powerhouses of the ‘developing’ world (aside: just when does a ‘developing’ country become ‘developed’), INDIA, CHINA, INDONESIA etc. are NOT held to the same standards or requirements.
This should obviously tell you that this is NOT about environmentaly issues, but rather wealth redistribution from the West to the East and South.
social justice issues, women’s justice issues, greenie party candidates….
Just another NDP front organization, by another name. This is the tactic of the left, deflect obfuscate and create multiple organizations so it looks like the numbers are bigger than they really are.
These aren’t recent converts of conservatism, these are lifelong communists!
I would love to see a list of “Most of the industrialized countries have met or exceeded their Kyoto targets” I haven’t been able to find one.
These people are insane. Nothing will get through to them.
They’re all freaking out. You should see Suzuki today in the Western Star, he’s having a go at Ezra for being a tool of the eeeeevile oil interests, preciousss.
phantomsoapbox.blogspot.com/2011/12/time-to-point-and-laugh-at-fruitfly-guy.html
Plus, anyone dim enough to quote Elizabeth May as a source of The Truth… If she said the sun had risen in the East I’d run out to check.
Wow. Plunking “Anthony Ketchum” into the Google search engine I can recognize a save-the-planet *fanatic* when I see one. This guy is the definition of ‘earth muffin.’ Earth muffin knows best. Twit alert!
Stephen Harper and his evil plan to warm the earth by .000000000000000000000000000001 degrees.
Read all about it.
Too stupid to get excited about.
Where are the reasonable reporters to ask those(elizabeth May)etc, who went to Durban “how did you manage to get to Durban South Africa?” a fair question I want ansswered.
Re: #2
List of key countries that have not met their targets:
Spain
Canada
Portugal
Ireland
New Zealand
Austria
Italy
Japan
Denmark
Switzerland
Netherlands
Belgium
The countries that have exceeded their targets are mainly Eastern European or former Soviet Union affiliates that had horribly inefficient industries that were relatively easy to clean up. Germany didn’t quite meet its target notwithstanding inheriting East Germany’s mess which was an easy way of reducing CO2.
The U.S. didn’t sign this idiocy and large polluters like China, India, etc. are exempted. Typical leftist bullshit.

None of those statements is accurate and I am not going to qualiy those lies with a repudiation of them with the facts.
Those fools cannot be educated, but they can be brain-washed and that is what has happened to them. They know nothing, but believe a whole bunch of nonsense,
We simply must start ignoring these fools unless they do something desperate that make trouble for anyone, they we may need to send them to Louisville Slugger University. That is the school of last resort. The tuition is free and the course is very short,
Nah, I’m just kidding ,,, i think we should stake them out prostrate in the Sahara desert where they can feel the Global Warmth they are so interested in.
Thank heavens Mr. Harper has the good sense to get us out of that cesspool of lunacy,
The one constant in all these brainwashed activists is “it’s for the children”. They learned from the anti-smoking crusaders that it is very effective and in most cases it’s something that guarantees your foot into the door of whaterver you are campaigning for. The other constant is that a good education has no bearing on common sense or logic. You either have it or you don’t. Thankfully the majority of Canadians seem to have it as NDP is still a minority party and the Liberals were stomped on.
My information is that because the US didn’t sign, it’s not legally binding on those who did.
They always need some kind of crisis it’s really the only thing they live for. If there was no crisis these people would be convinced they have some kind of disease.
Further to John’s post (7:21 pm), I would argue that every country that claims to have reduced its CO2 should be vetted according to the goods they import. Every electric vehicle, every wind turbine, every compost bin has caused some sort of pollution during its manufacturing process and its transportation. The world’s net CO2 has increased. So the fact that one country can claim to have met its so-called target is probably the result of out-sourcing its manufacturing to other countries–or due to a collapse of its own economy.
If you want to know where the European CO2 has gone (along with many of their economies), you might consider this:
China and India
Since 2003, CO2 in China has doubled, and in India they have increased by 60 percent. In 2010, Chinese CO2 jumped by 10 percent to 9.0 billion tonnes, even though China has doubled its installed wind and solar power capacity for the sixth successive year. India, where three-quarters of the gross domestic product, goes to meet domestic demand, has also been relatively unaffected by the credit crunch and its CO2 continued to increase in 2010 by 9 percent to 1.8 billion tonnes of CO2. India is now the fourth largest CO2 emitter, well ahead of Russia that in fifth place and behind the EU-27.
Other developing countries
In 2010 the economies of most other developing countries also recovered from the recession in 2009, with CO2 following suit. Brazil jumped 12 percent (from -5 percent in 2009), South Korea jumped 9 percent (from 1 percent in 2009). In total, CO2 in these countries increased on average almost 5 percent in 2010, up from 2 percent in 2009.
If my previous post is lacking in coherence, it’s because I was obliged to remove every occurrence of the word e-mi-s-s-i-o-n in it, otherwise the filter was annoyed.
Well the Tony 4-Truths video is up to a whopping 3 ‘Likes’. Sounds like consensus, eh?
With age and experience wisdom is supposed to come but I guess once the leftist virus takes hold of you there is no place for wisdom to get a foothold. His video is carefully choreographed and contrived propaganda designed to tug at the heart strings of the elderly. Uncle…zuki lies to children thislies to the elderly, the left is getting desperate.
I’ve read all these characterizations on this thread regarding Mr. Ketchum and since I know the man somewhat, since he has a weekend home in the Orangeville area, I have to say;
No arguement here.
The man is not without resources and likes to live a “Suzuki” kind of life. Owns a Prius, has a couple of homes, can jet off to Copenhagen and tell us how to live “for the grandchildren”. What with my modest place here in O’ville, and the small car I drive,I’ll guarantee my a$$print is smaller than his. He’s got way too much time on his hands.
I’m currently working on my BA in Enviro Studies:
He’s pretty picky about what facts he’s using. Yes, all those countries signed onto Kyoto, however, the vast majority of those countries have no obligations under Kyoto as they are developing countries. Only developed countries have obligations/emission cut targets.
#2 is debatable. Notice he used the term “industrialized” countries, not “developed” or “first-world”. Almost every country is now “Industrialized”. You could claim that the “EU” met it’s targets but not every EU country did. The “EU” technically met it’s targets because of the financial problems of eastern european countries as well as the recent economic fallout since 2008 (plus the enviro programs of the scandanavian countries). What he’s probably doing is considering the EU as a whole and then counting all the countries that had no targets to begin with as meeting their targets.
in #3 his statement about the accord is correct though his other point is debatable.
#4 is correct, but whether that is a bad thing or not depends on your point of view. Furthermore, although Canada is “the first” country to back out, it isn’t the only one as Russia and Japan are also on-side with Canada which he neglects to mention possible in an attempt to make Canada look like it’s alone in this position. Secondly, although Kyoto is technically “legally binding” there are no penalties for failing to meet your obligations.
Because I am now a senior…my brief intial impression was sympathy…he seemed to be an early victim of dimentia…then the gal popped up with her claim that her PHD made her opinion(s) unassailable….that’s the point I hit the Brave Sierra button.
Uninformed, gullible fools presenting themselves as authorities……..
Ketchum’s Ghost “as Kyoto Fades”.
““The threat of worsening economic conditions is the ghostly figure at the window for everybody,””
…-
“Bloomberg”
“Global Warming Fight Threatened by Debt Crisis as Kyoto Fades”
“Dec. 5 (Bloomberg) — Global warming concerns are being pushed down the political agenda by the European debt crisis and U.S. economic slump, reducing the chance for an accord limiting climate change this week.
“The threat of worsening economic conditions is the ghostly figure at the window for everybody,” Edward Cameron of Washington-based World Resources Institute said in an interview as delegates gathered for United Nations climate talks in Durban, South Africa.
Envoys from 194 nations have scaled back ambitions for this year’s meeting, which concludes Dec. 9. European Union leaders are set to meet in Brussels that same day to discuss a $270 billion bailout for indebted nations. President Barack Obama meets with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper this week to discuss “global issues,” according to the White House.”

Ketchum
“over the last 50 years, temperature has risen 0.9 degrees Celsius, or 1.6 degrees Fahrenheit.”
Why don’t they measure the temperature decline over the last 70 years. The late 1950s/early 1960s was the coldest point in recent history. Why not go back to the 1930s, the warmest recent era? I guess all the warmers are determined to hide the decline.
Kitsilano, BC…..Vancouver city police have arrested an unidentified man today and ceased computers and storage devises allegedly containing climate porn. Police say this man has also allegedly been known for breaking into people’s basements and unplugging thier refrigerators. Although unconfirmed at this time, sources tell us this man is university educated and could in fact be a prominent tv personality. We’ll keep working on this story and bring you more as it develops. Over to Jim at the sports desk….
Ahh, Sunday daydreams!
How do you spot the lies of an enviro-zealot?
Watch for the mouth to open.
“Most of the industrialized countries have met or exceeded their Kyoto targets.”
Well, despite not signing on the US exceeded what would have been its Kyoto target by about 2007.
Germany did about as well – by pushing for a starting date that allowed re-united Germany to count closing almost all the old East German power plants.
Japan – couldn’t, and will probably not sign on again. A possible contributing factor is that when their scientists looked at the data from their own satellites (no Goddard or EAU or whatever “data after adjustment”) they did find that the Northern Hemisphere emitted increasing CO2 amounts BUT also absorbed more than was emitted.
Out of curiosity, I know as a Canadian citizen I am bound by the laws of my Country, and I know if I travel elsewhere I must respect their laws, however is it actually written in our constitution that we civilian Canadians are ever bound by any world laws ie the United nations? If breaking away from Kyoto is illegal and there are possible penalties to be paid by Canadian taxpayers who have never pledged any allegiance to the UN then how much authority should we be allowing any Prime Minister to sign on any world court documents without some type of 70+ % referendum?
I remember Prime Minister Chretien signing onto Kyoto and thinking back then it was unconscionable………On the other hand if it is all just pomp and circumstance with no substance, why are we even paying to be at the table?
“Where are the reasonable reporters to ask those(elizabeth May)etc, who went to Durban “how did you manage to get to Durban South Africa?” a fair question I want ansswered.” JEN
It was said by a Canadian Envio Minister that Canada has more folks at these UN events than any other Country
I expect that CBC pays for a few! Those NGO’s have hands into Government Money
YES Jen! that is the question
I watched the Grandparents for our Grandchildren video, a collection of comments by useful idiots. The last thing I want to explain to my grandchildren is why we sold them into slavery to the likes of David Suzuki, Al Gore and the UN eco-terrorists. How we allowed corrupt politicians like David McGuinty and Barac Obama to squander their inheritances on expensive and flawed green technology when we could have used the plentiful resources that the Good Lord blessed us with. This crap is definitely the work of the devil, no matter what you choose to believe he is.
How do you suppose those dreaded “tarsands” came to be?
Perhaps the residue resulting from several million years of vast overgrown tropical jungles sucking the “carbon” out of the atmosphere and leaving us a big mess to clean up.
And why was there several thousand feet of ice all over where I now live approximately 20,000 years ago?
Of course the climate is changing, otherwise it would either still be a jungle here, or we would be living on top of an ice sheet.
These extreme changes have happened without our participation and probably will keep happening.
Our best strategy is to use our intelligence to adapt to the changes.
Kiss my big fat Carbon Footprint
My children will inherit my cash, and my gold. I KNOW they will be happy.
The hot air, well Daffy dave has ample amounts.
Another enviro-parasite – his sphincter is tightening at the prospect of donations/grants drying up.

Now, look at the graph “Where the Money went in 2009”. Those category titles (Understand, Enjoy, Look after) tell you a lot, eh?
Ketchum is listed as the Vice Chair.
Kyoto is nothing but a wealth transfer.
I just love the way that business donates to environmental cause not realizing they are communist fronts trying to destroy capitalism. It has nothing to do with the environment. It’s all about control.
Apparently Granny May is now an official delegate
for the governmnet of Paupa New Guinea at Durban
WTF!
Scar, these companies are prostitutes. Lenin said “The capitalist will sell me the rope with which I will hang him.”
Scar: There is always a market. It’s just that it might not be denominated in money.
When you can’t buy or sell as you please because of regulation, it becomes cost-effective to buy the regulators. In simpler societies that’s done directly, i.e., bribes and standard-issue “corruption”. In complex societies the purchase can be made indirectly, by sucking up to the regulators and creating was is basically fascism, which is nominally private enterprise but is actually direct mutual involvement between “business” and “government”.
Companies contribute to “green” causes to gain an in with the regulators, which allows them to tailor their operations to the whims of the controllers; the regulators are complimented by the stroking and go along with the gag. The deep irony of the “Occupy” protests is that they demand extension of the measures that created what they’re objecting to as “corporate welfare” in the first place.

Ric
Anthony J. Ketchum’s group sent a letter to Obama. This is a snippet of it:
“Sent: Wed, 10/12/2011
“Dear President Obama,
“We urge you, for the sake of future peoples and all species, not to authorize the Keystone XL Pipeline. This pipeline will result in increased greenhouse gas emissions, yet we have already exceeded 390 ppm of carbon dioxide, whereas we have been told that less than 350 ppm is necessary to ensure a livable climate, and a turn-around is not in prospect. . . .”
WHAT idiots these anti-prosperity, pro-enemy ideologues are, including the sorry excuse of a president.(And I’m no fan of materialism, which is at the very heart of these hypocritical impostors’ secular creed. Good Lord, deliver us!)
It wouldn’t be hard for India and China to meet their quotas – they didn’t have any!
more useless bs. who cares if agw theory true, pollution is a settled question. if we are reaching tipping point with 2deg increase – normal variability – then we are all dead. no canada didn’t do it, china and india will do us in.
climate reparation is political not climate science, so who cares what the hard left thinks, get elected you twits or quit bothering us.
the main anthropogenic source of co2 levels, now highest in 650,000 years is deforestation and burning of dirty coal in china. cherry picking data again, 8mil yrs ago co2 levels 8000ppm now 390ppm, part of a rise in atmospheric co2 levels trending for the last 18k years. put co2 level chart on proper geological time frame – isn’t that what palaeoclimatologists trained to do – and current co2 levels a mere blip and meaningless. anyway, if humans responsible why did most warming occur in first 50 yrs of 20th century? why is there cooling now – oops forgot about cooling effect of global warming.
anyway we should all agree pollution the problem and the only way to deal with it is to stop using fossil fuels starting with coal. are you listening china, india and usa? instead of calling each other names hundreds of nuclear power plants should have been built worldwide in last 10 years.
want to save the earth, dump climate change and adopt climate calming. calm down everybody and work together, that’s how you isolate suzuki, may and the other watermelons.
This grandfather of 4 just watched the “grandparents video”. It’s truly frightening that the propagandists were able to assemble this little group of vacuous twits from within a generation that should have acquired some wisdom long ago.
“They always need some kind of crisis it’s really the only thing they live for”
A real or imagined crisis also guarantees funding in one form or another. No crisis …. no funding. Sadly, it’s always about the money.
The zealots are not giving up without a fight. Now the UN wants to tax us for a greener climate.
