Two Democratic state senators are proposing to change state law to thwart Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli’s efforts to investigate a former University of Virginia professor’s research on global warming.
The proposed legislation would repeal sections of Virginia law that give the state’s attorney general authority to issue civil investigative demands, similar to subpoenas, to gather documents in relation to a civil investigation conducted by the office.
The bill is in response to efforts by Cuccinelli, a Republican, to investigate possible fraud by former UVa professor Michael Mann in relation to five taxpayer-funded research grants between 1999 and 2005.
The senators, A. Donald McEachin and J. Chapman Petersen, will meet this morning with Del. David J. Toscano, D-Charlottesville, at the Capitol to discuss the legislation.

The preliminary report indicates that “we see a global warming trend that is very similar to that previously reported by the other groups.”
So while I admit, it doesn’t excuse fudging the numbers, it should be noted that this subsequent and independent research has come to the same conclusions as the other scientists.

So Mann has done work that was paid for with public tax monies, work that is supposed to shape public policy on energy usage, and he is a man of such stellar reputation that government officials can’t get these papers to make sure Mann and his work is clean?

Ironically, back in 2006, Tim Ball himself sued U of Lethbridge prof Dan Johnson and the Calgary Herald for libel, claiming that a letter to the editor written by Johnson to the Herald insinuated that Ball had lied about his professional and academic resume.
That suit was dropped, however, after Johnson cited evidence in his own statement of defense showing clearly that Ball had indeed lied about his resume.

You guys raise excellent points regarding wind-turbines and questionable behavior of some scientists as well as some odd statements purportedly said by David Suzuki. The idea that one must either be entirely opposed to Climate Change or be a tree-hugging hippie is extreme and diminishes intelligent debate.

That being said, one’s distrust for a few figures like Al Gore and David Suzuki shouldn’t be reason to dismiss the science or be open to other opinions. Ball didn’t damage Mann’s reputation. Mann damaged his own reputation. A scientist knows that when the facts don’t support the theory, it’s the wrong theory. Mann cooked the data which means he was aware he was committing scientific fraud.
Ball helped expose him. He did the rest himself.
I have read there are a lot of people trying to sue Mann but he is being protected from prosecution. Probably from co-conspirators and elected lightweights that do not want the money tree chopped down. bambam and Iggy are still on the money trail.

Chesterfield – Johnson made allegations in his statement of defence to the suit brought by Ball. The allegations accept that Ball has a Doctorate in Climatology.

He is qualified to have an informed opinion. If Mann, Weaver and Suzuki don’t want him expressing it, that is censorship and using the courts to limit freedom of speach. Seems to be something the state contro advocates want to see more and more of.

He goes on to attack Dr. Ball for offering opinion while he lacks those ‘required credentials’. Interestingly, one of the people he rises in defence of, Dr. David Suzuki, is very outspoken on the science of ‘Climate Change’ but he appears not to pass muster wrt Dr.Johnson’s
‘required credentials’. Do we now conclude, that Dr. Suzuki’s pronouncements on ‘Climate Change’ should be ignored by academia and policy makers? Many Canadians have already chosen to ignore Dr. Suzuki’s comments but it is obviously more difficult to do if you are wearing the same team jersey.
