Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Heh.
If you don’t know which way slashes go in a URL, twitter will give you an aneurysm.
Thanks for the link, refreshing.

Wow! I didn’t know Harvard had THREE conservatives in the poly-sci department.
Yep, in university everbody is a ‘good socialist’…it brings back fond memories of animated discusssions with profs.
Watched this the other day, it is difficult to find those who still believe in the ‘classical small “l” liberal education’ rather than the now traditional steeping in ‘progressivism’ or some other ideological axe grinding…
Thankfully, mathematics and physics however the equations don’t lend themselves to ideological gerrymandering.

You may notice:
Not a single emotional outburst, or declaration. None.
Simply a series of statements, with some argument or rationale, as backup-background.
Maggie Attwood, Michael Moore take note!
The lefts’ rhetoric is limited to shouting slogans…..which makes all other elements appear rational.

Harvey Mansfield: a man to love and admire.
Quiet, unassuming, strong, honest, forthright, intelligent, and a man of faith.
Manliness at its most attractive.
The tag “genius” and the sealed records of Obama have a new meaning after listening to the dumb-downing of the marking system at even prestigious universities.
Not trying to miss the obvious talking points, but is it the camera angle or is Harvey’s head disproportionately large to his body size. The man is either a bobble-head or a caricature!?
Just another talking-head from Haaaavad!
Fascinating to listen to. Some of us wonder why the Western world’s civilization is in decline.
I wish I’d hear this when I was in university in the 1970’s. Would have made much more sense of the universe. Particularly that thing about “sensitivity”.
Personally, I’m not particularly sensitive to the emotions of people around me. To me what is important is to solve problems, not to pet and groom everyone around me. Do the job, do it right, earn the money they pay me, go home. I’m the cheerful “git ‘er DONE!” idiot that thinks other people’s opinions are their problem.
Turns out that as the professor said, modern society values sensitivity FAR above all other factors, even in business, even in the medical business. No one cares if you solve the problem you are being paid to solve. They care if you stroke their fur the right direction and scratch them behind the ear just the way they like it.
Which has lead to a LOT of frickin’ catastrophes the last 20-30 years as far as I can see, both large and small. People -die- from this crap in hospitals every day, because its more important to avoid ruffled feathers than it is to FIX THE PROBLEM.
Frankly, that p1sses me off. A lot.

The man is of slight build.
That this is all that you would take away from the interview would seem to imply that you are of slight mind.
I LOVE this guy! Where’s he been all my life?
OK, Hahvahd, where I’ve never been. He’s a hidden gem. No wonder it’s the Hoover Institute and National Review that have to highlight his thought. I can’t imagine CNN or any of the other networks interviewing Mansfield; he just makes too much sense. And, I love his understated, ironic manner. (No, he doesn’t wear a bow tie, but he DOES wear a tie and a suit.)
He gives students two marks: an “ironic mark,” which is the mark that goes to the registrar (to please the admin., the parents, and the students) and a “private grade,” which is the mark the student actually deserves. Apparently, many of his students say about Harvey Minus C Mansfield, that it’s his private grade that really counts. Kids aren’t stupid.
True statistic: In 1950, 1/6 of Hahvahd students received an A or A-. In 2007, more than half of Hahvahd students got an A or A-.
As for glacierman’s commment ” … is Harvey’s head disproportionately large to his body size? The man is either a bobble-head or a caricature! …”:
Harvey Mansfield’s head is packed full of brains, that’s why it’s so big!
I’m with you Phantom: Fawgettabout the sensitivity crap which, as you point out, jeopardizes us all in a crisis, and give me the guy who can fix the problem.
I don’t care if he’s rough and he’s gruff and he offends a few people’s senstivities. Just get the damned job done and leave the touchy-feely, warm fuzzies at home.
Sensitivity kills. Clear-headed can-do saves lives.
I tried to watch a segment of the Colbert Report in 2005, where he interviews Mansfield and this is the message I get: “In Canada, Comedy Central videos are available on The Comedy Network.”
Maybe there’s a way to access this video, but I can’t find a way to. In the search window I typed “harvey mansfield, 2005, Colbert Report” which of course led to the message “Sorry, blah, blah, blah …” My search failed.
We’ve gotta get SunTV up here. Our brains are rotting in Canada. ‘Just too much CBC, CTV, Global TV, CityTV, TorStar, Globe and Mail, etc.
HELP!
Captain Capitalism has an excellent rebuttal to the “feelings” crowd: When someone says “You hurt my feelings” the response shoulf be ” I don’t care about your feelings, I care about you!”. Not telling an employee they are not performing in a job may spare their feelings being hurt but you have at least delayed and maybe prevented that employee from finding a job at which they can perform.
