The Chips were a late 50’s doo-wop group from the mean streets of Bed-Stuy, New York. They had only one (minor) hit in their brief career, written by their lead singer when he was in a school for delinquent teens, but it was a particularly catchy one. As my brother wrote, via email:
Though I was never a fan of the doo-wop school of music, this one always gets to me. Starts strong, and then carefully develops it’s theme:
Cow dow hoo-oo
cow cow wanna dib-a-doo
chick’n hon-a-chick-a-chik hole-a-hubba
hell-fried chuck-a-lucka wanna jubba
hi-low ‘n-ay wanna dubba hubba
day down sum wanna jigga-wah
Del rown ay wanna lubba wubba…
Yes, I think we’ve got a strong contender for the theme song of the Ignatieff Summer Tour: here are The Chips charging apace through their 1956 novelty single Rubber Biscuit.

Looks like things are back to normal in Northern Ireland:
“Six months after the British government handed control of the police in Northern Ireland to local officials, the worst rioting in years has left 82 police officers injured in Belfast, the provincial capital, including an officer who was hospitalized in stable condition after a concrete slab was dropped on her head from a rooftop.
(…)
“Hundreds of rioters in Ardoyne battled the police with gasoline bombs, bricks, metal bars and planks on Monday after police officers in riot gear moved in to remove about 100 protesters who had staged a sit-in to prevent the Orange Order marchers from passing through a predominantly Roman Catholic neighborhood.”
More bad news for Iffy and the rest of the opposition: Too bad Iffy continues to talk pessimism about the Cdn Economy
“China’s leading credit rating agency has stripped America, Britain, Germany and France of their AAA ratings, accusing Anglo-Saxon competitors of ideological bias in favour of the West….Dagong Global Credit Rating Co used its first foray into sovereign debt to paint a revolutionary picture of creditworthiness around the world, giving much greater weight to “wealth creating capacity” and foreign reserves than Fitch, Standard & Poor’s, or Moody’s.
The US falls to AA, while Britain and France slither down to AA-. Belgium, Spain, Italy are ranked at A- along with Malaysia. Meanwhile, China rises to AA+ with Germany, the Netherlands and Canada…
Double bad for Iffy if the Chinese are pointing out the wealth creating capacity that Canada has.

A war on who’s terms
By Caroline Glick
We are entering troubling times. The conviction that war is upon us grows with each passing day. What remains to be determined is who will dictate the terms of that war – Iran or Israel.
http://www.carolineglick.com/e/
First, a bit of context: £2,000 = $3,130 Canadian. And yes, that’s *per week*, not per month. Here we go:
“An unemployed Somali bus conductor living with his family in a luxury Kensington home has defended their right to live in the posh suburb at taxpayers’ expense.
“Abdi Nur laughed yesterday after answering his door to howls of protest about the £2,000-a-week home he shares with his wife Sayruq and their seven children.
“‘I am in my rights to live here,’ he told The Sun. ‘You are fussing about nothing.’
“Neighbours have called for the family to be evicted.
“They said it was a ‘disgrace’ that a family on benefits is given a home that most working families would be unable to afford.
“The family had previously been satisfied living in a smart five-bedroom house in Brent, North-West London, at a cost of £900 a week in benefits.
“But last month, Mr Nur spotted a vacancy in nearby Notting Hill in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, and was given permission by the council to upgrade.”
Worse yet, they raised their voices to her…
/sarc
“Elnaz Babazadeh, a 26 year old woman, was raped and murdered by Basij forces in the city of Tabriz (northwestern Iran) last week. According to the reports, Basij forces stopped Babazadeh in her car for not following the Iranian regime’s dress code. Elnaz resisted and ignored orders given by the Basij forces.
“Then the Basij forces who had initially stopped her jumped into her car and threatened her with a gun. Two other Basij members joined in and all together they beat and raped her. They murdered Babazadeh and dumped her body close to Emamiyeh cemetery…”

Apropos of Kates fautography post, Chris Dreyfus recounts at PJM how at what was supposed to be an affirmation hearing of sorts wherein the incoming president of French public television would be validated, French Senator Jean-Pierre Plancade had this to say to him:
“I’d like to talk to you about the so-called death of Mohammed al-Dura, who according to this news report, was killed by an Israeli bullet.
“After France 2 aired this news report came a suspicion that French public TV broadcast a fake news report; suspicion confirmed by the fact that France 2 didn’t succeed when the channel sued one of our fellow citizens who accused France 2 of having aired, let me quote him, ‘a pure and simple staged scene.’
“I recently watched a documentary coming from the German public TV, ARD — ‘The Kid, the Death, and the Truth’ — which also proves that France 2 aired a fake news report.
“Let me remind you that this news report triggered the second Intifada, incited Muslims all over the world; that squares are dedicated to the child and that postage stamps have been printed with the picture of Mohammed al-Dura. The American journalist Daniel Pearl was even beheaded to avenge Mohammed al-Dura’s death…”

Most out of touch with majority Americans, “Not waiting for the Asteroid” quote of the day?
Via Financial Times:
“…Add to that the continuing woes of Harry Reid, the Senate Democratic majority leader, in Nevada, where the Republican party’s recent nomination of Sharron Angle, a far-right and highly eccentric Tea Party supporter, appear to have had no positive effect on Mr Reid’s prospects…”
I’ve often wondered what would happen if, when the Orange Order marches through predominantly Roman Catholic neighbourhoods, the citizens of the latter mocked the Oranges by mooning them, putting up large banners saying “Boooo!”, and the like?
Another oil spill, albeit not as large as BP’s,yet it will be under reported, because the ship is not owned by ‘BIG OIL’ or Preston Manning.
Note the CBC’s description of the amount of oil. Is that incompetence or obfuscation? http://www.cbc.ca/canada/montreal/story/2010/07/13/tanker-spill-montreal.html?ref=rss
This clip is going to be triply damned here because:
1) It’s 48 minutes long
2) It describes a type of battery that might actually make solar/wind useful (not a complete replacement for other energy sources, or even a major replacement, but useful)
3) The man lecturing, Don Sadoway, was born in (gasp) Toronto and educated at UofT before going on to MIT
Nonetheless, he describes in some detail liquid metal batteries, which may turn out to be a cost efficient way to capture intermittent power from non-carbon sources, and release it when needed. The lecture is entertaining on a number of fronts.

Thanks, Right Honourable Terry Tory, that one (12:37) is exemplary, even more so because it’s in the Financial Times. It just shows how mainstream media outlets – even conservative ones – continue to characterize, with a straight face, thoroughly decent Americans – quintessential Americans – as being “extreme” or “far-right.”
The FT in this case cites, as evidence of Senate Democrat majority leader Harry Reid’s woes, that he can’t even make gains on a “far-right and highly eccentric Tea Party supporter like Sharon Angle.”
Huh? Sharon Angle’s supposedly “far-right” positions read like a laundry list of the views of those millions of Americans who aren’t living in New York or L.A. or San Francisco: she’s in favour of offshore drilling, she thinks AGW is a fraud, she’s opposed to same-sex marriage, she’s in favour of tort reform, she says the UN is “a bastion of liberal ideology,” she wants to control government spending, etc etc.
Yeah – “far-right.” The couple who work hard, go to church, raise their own children, and don’t want big-government to continue to expand itself when it’s already the biggest business on earth, are “far-right,” and a threat to someone’s apparently more important and *centrist* vision.
If the media were consistent in applying this standard of judgement, Obama would be labeled as being to the “far-left” of Trotsky. It wouldn’t be an entirely accurate assessment, of course, but it would would be truer, by many orders of magnitude, than the thoroughly dumb, “everybody knows” assertions about the “far-right.”
Dear EBD,
I have recently seen a commercial for a product that removes “skin tags”. When I did extensive research (google), I found a medical term for this aliment – it was acrochordon or fibroepithelial polyp … I don’t know what those words mean, but it sounds dangerous.
On careful inspection, I think I have found one on me. My 2010 horoscope doesn’t give insight on what to do now, and I don’t think I should wait until the 2011’s are available in September. What do you suggest?

After examining your charts, and especially, the nature of your questioning on subsequent nights, it’s clear that Jupiter is about to hugely influence Uranus in an unforeseen and malefic aspect. Your personalized ($4.99 plus shipping and handling) charts strongly indicate that you should shed all vestigial dermic outgrowths in preparation for the big impact.
Another one for the “let me fix that headline for you” file:
Mountie fears more Canadians taking up jihad
OTTAWA – Increasing numbers of Canadians are becoming radicalized, taking up violent jihad and leading Canada to become an exporter of terrorism, a top Mountie told QMI Agency Tuesday.

Watched CTV National News last night to see if Paul Martin’s name would be mention in the report. To CTV’s credit, it was. Then I tuned it to The National, to see if the CBC would do the same. No surprise, they didn’t. Instead just mentioning CSL but no mention of the former LIBERAL PM. As you noted, had CSL been owned by a prominent Conservative and his family, we’d never hear the end of it, with heavy emphasis on “Conservative”, again and again, probably half a dozen times or more in a single report.
Another poll going horribly wrong. CTV at 0810am
Today’s Question
Will Michael Ignatieff’s cross-country tour help build trust with Canadians?
Yes 13%
No 88%

O’s BP (Barack Petroleum) Update:
“a stunning setback”.
…-
“After days of progress, BP halts work on cap
NEW ORLEANS – BP froze activity on two key projects Wednesday meant to choke off the flow of oil billowing from its broken well in the Gulf of Mexico after days of moving confidently toward controlling the crisis.
The development was a stunning setback after the oil giant finally seemed to be on track following nearly three months of failed attempts to stop the spill, which has sullied beaches from Florida to Texas and decimated the multibillion dollar fishing industry.
The oil giant and the government said more analysis was needed before testing could proceed on a new temporary well cap – the best hope since April of stopping the geyser. Work on a permanent fix, relief wells that will plug the spill from below with mud and cement, also was halted.”

Hardcore Warmists are at it again! I just wasted 5 minutes of my life, reading tripe from the Prairie Dog about why “deniers” deny AGW. The article then states how “deniers”, like Lord Monckton, are egomaniacs and have deluded heads. Later in the article, it claims that “deniers” belief that Global Warming isn’t anthropogenic conflicts with them being nice, caring people.
Warmists are getting more desperate by the milliseconds!

Harper saves Liberal bus
While Stephen Harper had no part in the breakdown, a Harper was hired to repair the bus.
Once a second bus arrived to carry passengers, supplies and luggage to Cornwall for a late event Tuesday evening, the Liberal Express was towed to Harper Diesel, a garage specializing in engine parts and repairs for buses and transport trucks.
An employee with Harper Diesel’s Cornwall service centre would only confirm the Liberal Express had been fixed there, adding the irony of Harper fixing Ignatieff’s bus hadn’t dawned on him until contacted by QMI Agency.
Sulphur.
I found this article highly amusing. Here’s a key paragraph:
“The time has come for [Tea Party leaders] to accept the responsibility that comes with influence and make clear there is no place for racism and anti-Semitism, homophobia and other forms of bigotry in their movement,” stated NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous.
Background: If you’re not familiar with “NAACP”, it stands for “National Association for the Advancement of Colored People”. At one time it had a legitimate purpose but nowadays it’s just another front group for the Democrat Party in the U.S.
Back to the quote … the use of the terms “racist” and “homophobic” by pundits on the Left has become almost as common as the use of the words “the” and “but”. But this latest canard of charging conservatives with being “anti-Semitic” is beyond preposterous! In any discussion about Israel in the past 10+ years, what’s the common thread of non-Muslims who criticize Israel and defend or excuse Radical Islam? Answer: They’re on the Left. They’re always on the Left!!!
http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local-beat/Suffer-These-Crimes-in-Oakland-Dont-Call-the-Cops-98266509.html
apparently the police in Oakland will not be responding to a list of crimes anymore.
I think there has been an effort to remove this from the web but I’m not certain. I had to do a little digging.
“San Francisco-based Corporate Ethics International launched a new ad campaign Wednesday that urges would-be visitors to “rethink” planning a trip to Alberta.
“Alberta is spending millions to brand itself as an environmentally friendly destination for tourists when, in fact, we think it’s the most environmentally unfriendly place in North America because of the tarsands,” said executive director Michael Marx.”

Well, at least “Corporate Ethics International” found a great name for its executive director. Welcome to another room in the asylum!
