50 Replies to “Plain Spoken Conservatives”

  1. She is one tough broad. Love her! By contrast, the guy in the opening question is nothing but a girly man

  2. …you do not create a property-owning democracy that way.”
But that’s precisely what Labour had no intention of creating, and both sides knew it as she spoke those words. (That’s the marvel of politics – there’s always a lie married to any truth.)

  3. Wonderful Cjunk, thank you very much for posting that.
Somewhat related to this video, it is my observation, over many years, that individual conservatives also tend to posses a much better sense of humour than liberals. I think it might be because conservatives tend to have a positive view on life, whereas liberals are always looking for the negatives.
As for female conservative pitbulls, I think that topic was discussed not that long ago on SDA, but unfortunately I cannot recall the exact date.

  4. To your question, CJ, I honestly think there are few conservatives left in Ottawa.
Interestingly, Maxime Bernier has been talking conservative lately.

  5. Although I called him out a little while ago, I’m beginning to think Bernier is the only hope for Conservatism in Canada.

  6. The CPC has been looking like Liberal Lite. I can cut them some slack because they are a minority, but I can’t bring myself to cut a check.
Love Iron Maggie. We need more like her.

  7. I think it is extremely difficult to govern as a Conservative when the majority of the population are centrist and even tend to the left/socialism.
Don’t forget that a large ‘bloc’ of the Canadian electorate are socialist. These include the many House seats in the three major cities of Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal, as well as the majority of Quebecers and the Maritimes. That’s a lot of House seats; remember that Quebec is guaranteed 75 and is most upset that the West is not slated to catch up and equal Quebec’s House seats.
The rural areas and the West are ‘independent’, i.e., conservative. As the economy shifts westward, despite the fight to prevent this by the Ottawa-Montreal cabal, the govt in Ottawa will be able to express this change. But it’s a fight; the Old Guard of a Canada focused around Quebec-Ontario have no desire to lose their power and will vilify the West whether it be ‘redneck’ or ‘oilsands’ terminology.
And they have a powerful tool – the Charter of Rights which has little to do with rights and a great deal with empowering Quebec via bilingualism.
The Conservative movement in Canada can’t come from the top-down in any great movements because of this centrist-socialist heritage and because of Quebec. The govt attempts can only be by small steps. The real effort has to come from the grassroots, as it has with the opposition to the censorship and repression of the HRCs and so on.

  8. Liberal-socialist IffyRae explains:
Gordon Brown is ours; a socialist; a good disciple of our church.
Our church is The Religion of the Stomach: socialism.
    …-
“Gordon Brown apologizes for calling a pensioner a “bigoted woman”
    National Post

  9. Nothing has happened to conservative men, it is just that for the MSM, the concept of a conservative is a white Anglo-Saxon old guy in a suit with a June Cleaver wife at home playing bridge with the girls. That idea is precisely why the Iron Maiden rattled the media establishment.

  10. Watching parliamentary Question Period, it seems the CPC is starting an effective counter-punch campaign against the ‘culture of deceit’ attack.

  11. That should be that the West is NOW slated, not NOT slated..to catch up to Quebec.
Another factor that makes it difficult for a govt to govern in a ‘big time’ Conservative mode is the media in Canada which is almost entirely socialist left. We don’t have a FOX news here but we have a publicly funded CBC and the rest, all ranting against Harper and the CPC. Constantly.
So, the govt style has to be by ‘bricolate’ or small steps, where it will give more power to the provinces, reduce taxes, support small business etc..all of which has been done. I give Harper credit for his foreign affairs, which has put Canada on the world stage as rational, principled and apolitical.
His internal handling isn’t in the public eye; our MSM don’t talk about what he’s done for infrastructure, fiscal affairs, water, roads, etc… Our MSM focus endlessly on the junk brought up by the Liberals/NDP..eg, ‘eating a wafer’ (how much press time was spent on that?); trying to attach Harper to Schreiber; now, Jaffer…it’s endless. No press time is ever given to the real accomplishments. None.
Again, in a socialist state with a public educated that The Govt Does It All, changes have to be, by the govt, step by step…and the voices and actions have to be grassroots. Canadians have to show that they want a conservative govt; not just the commenters at SDA, but a large number of Canadians.

  12. Kate, you are right – most of today’s conservative pit bulls are women. You are the next Maggie Thatcher.

  13. Is it that conservative men are non-existent or that they have decided to “hide” for a bit until they can figure out how to get around the “pitbull”ing MSM?.
I know from my own experience that even light conservative values can be thwarted as “radical” and “extreme” amongst friends(yet I also have the opportunity to a fair debate).
What use is a politician who can’t get their accurate message past a biased media filter?

  14. ET:
That’s why all of us need to forcefully and respectfully express our confidence in the power of the individual whenever we are among others.
Without this forum, divide and conquer would be much easier.

  15. ET said: “the majority of the population are centrist and even tend to the left/socialism.”
First off, not necessarily true. But, if true, perhaps that’s because conservatives don’t message effectively … they are at this point in Canada the communicators from hell. Take PM Harper for instance … one of the worst communicators to ever be leader of a conservative party in Canada. Harper couldn’t sell a water pump to a flood victim.
How do you know that plain spoken expression of concepts won’t work? Why let Robert Fife set the standard for what is acceptable discourse for conservatives?

  16. There are bastion’s of Conservatism in Atlantic Canada and even Newfoundland. We tend to vote for the person and not the party however.
I supported Stephan Harper and can’t believe that he has not made any movement on the LGR, CBC, Debt, etc.
My guess is we will see another Reform type party in the next few years. I would welcome it. It might split the vote or it could cause the CPC to actual start acting like Conservatives.

  17. What a great lady she was, Thatcher. That video is fantastic. David Cameron is such a far cry from the leader that she was. The only reason he will win is that he is not as bad as the other choices.

  18. The difficulty with having ‘pitbull’ conservative leaders is that they too often become ‘flash in the pans’. Thatcher was a wonderful leader in her time but she was soon shuffled off and in not too many years replaced with Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. Ronald Regan was a wonderful conservative but he was replaced by Bill Clinton and Oblamebush. What is needed and I firmly believe PM Harper is delivering, is incremental change that philosophically changes the minds of the electorate. If PM Harper simply took a broad sword to that which is an anathema to Conservatives he would be voted out of office and the things he sought to cut would be strengthened. Instead of cutting HRCs for example let it become abundantly clear that HRCs are undemocratic then slowly wean the people off of them as you gently cut the HRCs funding. The progressives have been working on making Canada a progressive nation for a hundred plus years. Are we Conservatives so short sighted and impatient that we will allow the progressives to run the nation because we don’t think PM Harper is moving fast enough?

  19. cjunk – I agree, the Conservatives are not communicating effectively. It is extremely difficult to find out what this govt is doing.
The MSM will not report it; its focus is only on scandal and the scandal has one agenda – anti-Harper.
To find out what the govt is doing, one has to go to the official web sites, and laboriously link, via multiple links, to departments, to official announcements of funding. No-one is going to do that. I’ve done it, to develop some ‘Information Flyers’ for local ridings but the work required to get this data from those sites is unbelievable.
None of the information gleaned has ever made it to the MSM. None.
No, I disagree that ‘all it takes’ is effective communication to bypass the MSM. It takes money as well. Can the govt justify spending taxpayer money on, eg, ads in local newspapers listing what the govt did that month for that locality? The MSM won’t report it; so, the govt would have to pay for it. Can they justify this to the taxpayer?
Harper gets a lot of visual time in the US, appearing on FOX, CNN – and is well-thought of for his clarity of thought and expression. Doesn’t happen here in Canada. Here, we get all the rabid anti-Harper, anti-CPC socialists given prime time.
mouth/bleet – what editing? How would you improve ‘the lot of the poor’ as well as maintaining ‘the lot of the wealthy’?

  20. ET
Excellent posts. Unfortunately a very accurate appraisal of the political reality in Canada.
My only wish would be that the CPC consistantly preach simple economics to voters. Credit should be given to those who live by budgets and realize that ultimately governments must as well. Society has abdicated the education of their youth to teacher unions and cannot expect a ‘natural’ awareness of conservative thought. IMO it has to be prompted regularly.
I also agree that the east vs west economic struggle impacts politics to the utmost extent. It could ultimately break up this country. Normally conservative voters regularly vote Liberal in an effort to maintain power in the east. The damage it has done to Canada is untold.

  21. The only reason we see Fox News in Canada is because some one took the issue to court. The CRTC was blocking any moves to make it available until a court opened the door.
We need a campaign to dissolve the CRTC…they have been quietly practising censorship for far to long.

  22. As usual, mouth expresses the mindless hate of the Left. Dear mouth-breather, if the rich become poorer because of having their money taken away by government, that money does not go to the poor. It goes to the government, and the government spends it on a million idiot programs which employ their friends and relations in cushy sinecures. The poor get poorer.
In 1992 it cost the Canadian taxpayer 10 billion dollars to distribute 3 billion dollars in UIC benefits. That’s the best one I can come up with on the spur of the moment. 1992 was not a banner year for government waste, it was just another year.
This is why we do not like Big Government. But as Margaret Thatcher says, you mouthy Lefties don’t care about the poor. All you care about is hurting the rich. That’s why we mock and revile you.

  23. ET said: “The Conservative movement in Canada can’t come from the top-down in any great movements because of this centrist-socialist heritage and because of Quebec. YES!!! By God, that’s what I’ve been screaming about for years. The CPC can’t shrink government themselves, because the game is rigged to prevent them. Government will shrink when Conservatives grass roots make it impossible for it to grow. It will shrink when proposing a tax increase or a new program is political suicide.
In other words, when even the NDP finally give up the tax and spend model because WE MAKE THEM DO IT.

  24. A modern day speaker on this is Dennis Prager. He has a gift for simplifying issues. For instance, his new slogan is “the bigger the government, the smaller the citizen”, meaning that as we add social programs, we take away individual initiative.
He’s also promoting “American Values” as found on the American penny: Liberty, e pluribus unum, and in God we trust.
I highly recommend subscribing to his podcast.

  25. > did anybody notice that the new conservative
    > pitbulls are more often than not women
Yah, no kidding. Kathy Shaidle usually has the biggest pair in any room she’s standing in, no matter how many men are present.

  26. Conservatives would like everybody to succeed.
Progressives would like to rip down the more successful for … being successful.
    Basic Tenth Commandment stuff.

  27. Aye tis a thing of beauty to watch Thatcher literally mug the labourites…..and appear casual…
“….did anybody notice that the new conservative
pitbulls are more often than not women.”
Yeah that is likely for several reasons…
    1) “the concept of a conservative is a white Anglo-Saxon old guy in a suit with a June Cleaver wife at home playing bridge with the girls.”
    2) Leftist female politicos such as Frey, Copps tend to come accross as shrill….lefties have no sense of HAHA.
    3) A vestige of decorum…the reluctance to shout down/interupt/slander a woman. The hysterical attacks on Palin have resulted in a severe backlash….except for the diehard lefties….the majority interpret it as just plain rude behaviour….uncultured…..

  28. I consider that mouth/bleet is a troll who is unable to argue or debate.
He never presents a logical argument; all he does is mouth all his illogical, unsubstantiated opinions. They are all, in themselves, pure rubbish. When you ask him to explain them and to validate them – he never replies.
He has no understanding of economics. None. He thinks that the poor ‘ought to be rich’ and the only reason they are not is because of someone else’s fault.
It doesn’t occur to him that if you work in an unskilled job because you have no skills – then, your poverty is yours. It doesn’t belong to anyone else.
If you work at a highly skilled job, because you have developed those skills, then your wealth is yours. It doesn’t belong to anyone else.
Obtaining skills isn’t a scam. It’s hard work that takes years of sacrifice and..that work. Being on welfare rather than developing skills is easy. And a scam.
mouth/bleet doesn’t understand that results come from one’s own initiative and work. Not from insisting that others support you.
But we’ve learned that mouth/bleet isn’t interested in gaining understanding, in learning, in knowledge, in the truth. He just has opinions. That’s a sign of intellectual poverty.

  29. What would be your definition of “rich” be mouth? Put a dollar value on it. If it is more than what my networth is, am I then poor?
C’mon man tell me what level is your “rich”.
While you’re at it, tell us all here what you would do if you were considered “rich”. Inquiring minds would like to know.

  30. Yes, I have noticed that the women, Palin, Bachmann are the ones (excuse me) with sack.
    Hey, I’ll take’m.

  31. Looks to me like a minority government situation coming up in the UK … and any two of the three parties could form a coalition. Since they are all various shades of pink, it won’t really matter that much which two they are, might as well go for a three-way.
I miss the days of moral clarity but the problem has been lack of a common stand among conservatives, some gave way at abortion, others at same sex marriage, others at global warming. Sooner or later you have this current mish-mash of centrist incrementalism and that’s just like saying “we don’t want to drive off the cliff, but let’s try rolling off in neutral, maybe it won’t be as bad.”
    Well, it will take longer.

  32. Mouth/Bleet
It’s called the politcs of envy…
OBOZO played that an “white guilt”….
Both of which are running thin now….
His support is now limited to that 14% racial group and the minority of hard leftists who are only successfully eliminated by firing squads.
Government does not create employment but has the ability to create unemployment.
    Lefties do not employ anyone….
    Bureaucrats are just parasites….
Lefty economics are limited to pillaging the fruits of the productive….inevitably they kill the golden goose and run out of other people’s money.

  33. Hey, fellas, don’t be so hard on Mouth. He’s a product of our times and it is our fault. We should have been “in their face” long ago. Now they really believe they have the moral high ground. I remember when Trudeau sent his minions, LaLonde and Chretien, to Alberta to rape us with his National Engergy Plan (was that Petro Fina shell game some kind of precursor to the Lieberal AdScam, or what!?) We were told that we who railed against the forced take over of our provincial resource were “not good Canadians.” And nobody from Central Canada was outraged as we were. Quebecors would have screamed to high heaven about such an “insult.” But none were heard from. Only Trudeau, Lalonde, Chretien . . . And you want us to continue taking the insults from CBC and the likes of EKOS pollster Frank Graveytrain? You want “patience” and “small steps”? Duceppe came to Alberta a few weeks ago (No, it probably wasn’t covered in the Tranna MSM) and he laughed in our faces for being so stupid and accommodating to Quebec. He told us if we were unhappy that Quebec gets $8 to 9 Billion (60 percent)of the about $22 Billion that Alberta sent of Ottawa last year for the “equalization” rip-off; well just wait until Ottawa brings in the Cap-and-Trade agreement. Then, dummies, Quebec will really rake in the cash from our Alberta resources because, of course, hydro is so pure and eco-friendly. This “Cultural War” is oh so much like the Trudeau NEP attack on Alberta. History repeats! We need an Alberta-Saskatchewan Prairies Bloc now!

  34. yoo hoo, mouth – yet again, you fail to answer questions. Just as you’ve failed to do so on other blogs.
And making fallacious assertions about others (eg, ET) won’t absolve you of responsibility.
Let’s try it again, mouth/bleet. Iasked two questions.
“what editing? How would you improve ‘the lot of the poor’ as well as maintaining ‘the lot of the wealthy’?”
Try, mouth/bleet. Try to answer them. With fact. With logic. No, not just your opinions. I know you can’t tell the difference between a conclusion and a premise..but try to answer just those two questions. Youo’ve utterly failed to answer questions in ANY thread.

  35. CT:
My only wish would be that the CPC consistantly preach
Grammar and spelling aren’t that important, clearly.

  36. Soccermom the first politician to get a handbagging from Maggie is Simon Hughes a Liberal or as they were back then a Liberal Democrat http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_Hughes
He was “outed” a few years back by the Sun newspaper and now openly boasts about his bisexuality. Quite how the rapidly increasing mnority of muslims in Bermondsey will react to that one is unclear, but at the last election he got a majority of 5,000 plus.
The other clown to end up on the receiving end of Maggies tongue is I think a Scottish Nationalist MP though he may be Labour. There is not much between either of really. Both are socialists. Both as bad as each other really.

  37. “Normally conservative voters regularly vote Liberal in an effort to maintain power in the east.”
    BINGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
With friends like that, who needs friends?

  38. Private property is only second to free speech for a Democracy to flourish. If you own something you want to make sure its not stolen by instable government bureaucrats, or welfare corporatism.
Being the life givers, its my contention Women know a nest is better than a ditch. Hence the ferocity of Conservative Females to Men who have been told to shut up from TV to grade school.
Its true, you can never really be a citizen unless you own property. It used to be used for who voted.
The dream Of the Marxists & Obama’s of the World is that only an Elite can own anything. All else goes to the State bureaucracies to force the slave mass to live their lies. They will kill you, drive people to penury than steal all your labor to prove a malicious deadly ideology of envy.
Conservative confine power, Socialists bloat it till it explodes.
The left want you poor stupid with you paying for it. While they solidify by blood their own Elitist status without competition. Thatcher knew this deep in her bones. Its why they displayed such outrage. She caught em with their pants down.

  39. Indiana Homez: Thanks for the comment, re Ontario “Conservatives” not being friends of the West by voting Liberal federally to retain “power.” They can keep power, just leave us the hell alone if you can’t stand in support of our rights as equal Canadians. How about Newfoundland”s “Conservative” Premier who hates PM Harper? And probably Alberta, too. Yeh, I know. I get it from my brother and sister-in-law from Ontario, too: “Boo-hoo.Poor Alberta.” Well, the vast majority of us are just ordinary hard-working Canadians who, in fact, pay much higher in federal taxes than anyone else in the country, and it isn’t because we’re more rich; it’s because Central Canadians perceieve us as rich and, worse yet, unworthy because we’re “red-neck” Conservative-minded. Lay off that. And, again, thanks, Indiana Homez, for at least some response from my SDA friends on what was my third plea for some Central Canada support for the greed-based CBC “Cultural War” on our resources. This is oh so much like the Trudeau NEP raid, which was carried off largely because of tacit approval from The Rest of Canada.

  40. I am waiting for Carla to get ugly with Boxer…The stars are lining up… We humans have some Monkey traits; we must see how it’s done before stepping forward…
The Carla/Boxer match will set the tone/breath of political Correctness for a few years….

  41. “I miss the days of moral clarity but the problem has been lack of a common stand among conservatives, some gave way at abortion, others at same sex marriage, others at global warming.”
I think its more complicated than that Peter. I believe what’s happened is the so called “conservative tent” has grown larger, and is now home to many that are not conservative. In fact, the tent should be called the “ Common Sense Tent” but its too late for re-branding now. At one time, we could trust that both sides of the political aisle had shared aspirations for the most part. Since then ,the political Left has been usurped by forces that are commonly referred to on this site. The results are, many who shared big picture aspirations for their country with conservatives fled the Left and found sanctuary under the conservative tent; even though they weren’t quite conservative.
Part of the Lefts strategy to mislead their existing supporters by labelling all who disagree with their progressive vision as “conservatives” regardless of the truth. The bottom line is, you may be voting Left today, but when your beliefs inevitably stray from what politically best for the Left; you too will be slandered as a “conservative”(ask the American Jews). This tactic a) hides the fact that many Democrats and Liberals have fled the Left and found sanctuary on the Right from supporters who haven’t done so yet; which delays the inevitable question: why did my peers leave? And b) moves the political conversation further to the Left, because the values that former defects take with them to the Right become Centrist instead of Left.
I have often wondered that if I was older, would I have considered myself a “classic liberal”?
What you fail to mention in your comment is that “classic conservatives” would likely not have supported GWB going to Iraq, nor Afghanistan. That would have been the “classic liberal” thing to do. So I guess …“you take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and then you have… the facts of life”.
This is also where the “Ron Paul debate” spawns from, where you’ve got “classic conservatives” pointing at “ pro-life, pro-gay… conservatives” screaming “You’re not a real conservative”.

  42. garrysworld
Don’t be so glum, you’d be surprised how many people feel the same as you do.
A year or so back I made a small unscientific poll and posted the web address here. Your mood might lighten a bit if you check it out…

  44. Speaking of strong ladies in conservative politics.
Now they are so out of control Obama called the swat team on a group of ’em attending a Tea Party.
Obama needed to call the swat team on a group of polite grannies?
