The Sound Of All Hell Breaking Loose, Comrades

Multiple sources are drawing attention to this English language version of a news item published by the Kommersant, in Russia;

Climategate has already affected Russia. On Tuesday, the Moscow-based Institute of Economic Analysis (IEA) issued a report claiming that the Hadley Center for Climate Change based at the headquarters of the British Meteorological Office in Exeter (Devon, England) had probably tampered with Russian-climate data.
The IEA believes that Russian meteorological-station data did not substantiate the anthropogenic global-warming theory. Analysts say Russian meteorological stations cover most of the country’s territory, and that the Hadley Center had used data submitted by only 25% of such stations in its reports. Over 40% of Russian territory was not included in global-temperature calculations for some other reasons, rather than the lack of meteorological stations and observations.
The data of stations located in areas not listed in the Hadley Climate Research Unit Temperature UK (HadCRUT) survey often does not show any substantial warming in the late 20th century and the early 21st century.

Steve McIntyre“Climategate emails show that Phil Jones of CRU, acting as a reviewer of the CRU data used in the HadCRU gridded temperature, “went to town” to block the publication of criticisms of his handling of Russian data.”

  1. Agreed on how we should treat news reports coming out of other (or any, for that matter) countries.
    However, it is interesting to me that twice now the Russian press has taken a leadership role in reporting the climategate story. And the western press continues for the most part to deep six, obfuscate, or minimize the story. Oh how the worm has turned!

  2. From the previous thread…
    More scumbaggery , the Russkies just threw the CRU under the bus.

  3. I used Google to translate the document. The last few paragraphs confirm the English reports. The only question is – Is the Russian source pdf file actually from the IEA?
    Given the negative divergence of the temperature series until the mid 1950

    HadCRUT, for the territory of Russia from 1870 to 1990-ies can be estimated as
    minimum of 0.64 degrees C.
    This estimate is at the same time very conservative, because
    calculations of temperature on the territory of Russia have been used all means at the base
    Hydromet data without conducting any meaningful their selection, as well as without
    them with the necessary correction, for example, the effect of urban heat effect.
    Distortion of temperature on such a scale for a country of such scale as Russia

    warming submitted HadCRUT and used in the IPCC reports. For

  6. With the whole global warming/cap and trade thing being a huge communist plot you’d think the Russians would be behind it. Not exposing it. Times have changed. The British and American leaders are the ones trying to destroy capitalism and the free world and the Russians are the ones trying to save it.

  7. “remember that when dealing with foreign newspaper reports, it’s best to remain agnostic until there’s independent confirmation.”
    Ha. And when dealing with North American newspaper reports, it’s best to remain agnostic until there’s independent confirmation. Roger that.

  8. Chiefio has done a credible job of looking at station dropout and relocation statistics around the world. In his words, “the only warming I see is from Thermometer Change.”
    If rural stations are shut down, the average temperature will rise. If high altitude stations are shut down, the average temperature will rise. If mercury thermometers are replaced with electronic substitutes, the continuous record is interrupted and naturally things must now be ‘adjusted’ to conform. All of these changes have happened, and if you rely on GHCN statistics taken at face value, the latest decade IS the hottest. But this is indeed “man-made warming” because it occurs only in the statistics, not in the, you know, actual atmosphere, which has inconveniently refused to warm.
    Spend some time at his site…start at this link. http://chiefio.wordpress.com/2009/11/03/ghcn-the-global-analysis/

  9. ” And when dealing with North American newspaper reports it’s best to remain agnostic. Period.

  10. It doesn’t really matter if the story is accurate. The fact it’s been reported is a signal that Russia is having doubts about the sanity of making policy based on an unsubstantiated theory.

  11. Jack, when dealing with North American papers its best to assume they are A) lying, B) copying off the New York Times (who lied) C) are too stupid to understand the issue and have gotten it wrong, D) are being punked, or all of the above.

  12. Further from the Google translation of the Russian source document:

    9. Results
    Analysis of the use by the Hadley Center and Climate Center
    University of East Anglia, meteorological data obtained at the Russian stations,
    shows that they undertake a sample led to the following results:
    • the share of Russian stations when calculating global temperature
    undervalued compared with the proportion of area of Russia in the surface
    Earth’s land;
    • selection of weather stations conducted in such a way that as a result of uncoated
    data was more than 40% of the country;
    • series with the longest period of observation, representing
    particularly valuable for assessing the sesquicentennial of the temperature trends
    far from being fully utilized;
    • the implementation of the sample data series, with preference given
    Missing measurements, while a more complete series were
    unclaimed;
    • the implementation of data retrieval priority is given to stations
    change their location compared with the stations, it
    persists;
    • when given a choice between neighboring stations advantage given
    stations located in more populated areas, including
    cities with distinctive “heat spot”.
    In other words, employees HadCRUT carried out a systematic selection
    meteorological data, preferring the less quality data compared to more
    quality: they are shorter and less complete series; data collected
    stations, often tolerated and in more locations. In
    They seem to deliberately refused, describing the temperature
    mode at approximately 40% of the territory of our country.

  13. The funny thing is that Russia would never be affected by anything implemented at Copenhagen. When was the last time Russia or China have been made to answer for their disgusting pollution? The chief recipients of enviro-tyrants’ anger are Western countries like Canada and the US. Canada is apparently the “dirty man” of the world yet not a word about China or Russia.

  14. I took a call tonight from a solicitor selling the Toronto Star. I told him bluntly that it was a socialist rag and I wouldn’t read it if you paid me. He did laugh. This felt so good!

  15. Pravda,far more honest than CBC and does not have their hand in my pocket.Amazing stupidity of press,the nothing to see here coverage,assumes we are too stupid to use the search engine attached to the e-mail dump.Continuing to present as experts those compromised by the e-mails,indicates the reporters did not in fact read those documents.Two weeks of silence,then weak attempts at damage control,too funny.Christmas came early this year.

  16. Watch the weather at Copenhagen next day or two, cold east winds are blowing across the Baltic, some parts of Denmark could see their version of snow squalls … it should at least cull the herd of climate hooligans.
    On the other hand, Tiger Woods may be in the region on his yacht, and he’s quite hot (hot to yacht).

    But you know, something awful just struck me. And this is after more than 20 years as a so-called “denier”.
    Hundreds of my colleagues (including some family members) will slowly begin to realize that their careers, their grant-money, their awards and degrees,…
    ALMOST THEIR WHOLE PROFESSIONAL CONTRIBUTION TO THE ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE

    And if I, personally, have hundreds colleagues etc., then their must be thousands upon thousands upon thousands infected.
    Could it be that such a realization will lead to similar miserable after-effects of a stock-market crash?
    Not only the scientists. Of course, they most culpable. There are also the “journalists”, the doomsayers, and yes, the clergy.

  18. That’s a thought provoking question. Tonight CBC, Evan Solomon featured who else but Dr. Fruit Fly. Tonight he was comparing PMSH to the appologists for slavery in the 19th century. No, I don’t remember him mentioning this story, though he did rant a lot about warming in the arctic.

  19. Simmy @ 10:17, good for you.
    Western Canadian @ 10:19, hmmm, good question, give me ten seconds to think about. Got it, Pravda is the right answer.
    I never thought I would see the day that Russia would defend capitalism against the Marxists trying to take over here. It appears they have figured out that their people will do better in the long run with capitalism than with socialism. Although based on what we saw in 2008, they have a long ways to go to catch up to us. The thing is though, we are going backwards here, especially with the individual freedom thing.
    I may have to write Putin a letter to see if we could get our grandfather’s farm back.

    If this is the Age of Nefarious, it will still be ok to be a Skepticorn. And there will still be representatives of the 5th Dimension popping up in our lives. If I watched CBC I could probably encounter several.

  21. You know Al Gore and his scam are both finished when
    [ Rick Perry doesn’t like to talk about his days as a Democrat, particularly his role in 1988 as the head of Al Gore’s presidential campaign in Texas.]
    [Perry said. “I think he’s gone to hell.”]

  22. I can’t remember exactly when, but within the past 10 years I recall a MSM source reporting record-setting cold in Siberia. I wonder if that shows up in Met/CRU data?
    I made a mental note of it at the time because the media then were still in Global Warming mode rather than “climate change” mode and I thought it would be useful in arguing with “Do you believe how hot it is this summer [in Toronto] so far?” being used as “proof” of AGW.

  23. The Canadian media is corrupt. I don’t believe anything they report, it’s all lies. I’ll take the word of Pravda any day over the word of Peter Mansbridge and the CBC. ctv/global/city/bnn the globe, and the red(toronto) star arent any better.

  24. “With the whole global warming/cap and trade thing being a huge communist plot you’d think the Russians would be behind it.”
    The Russians aren’t actually communists anymore, they are more of a thugocracy with a mix of big government, large black market and as much capitalism as they can tolerate. However, Russia has some of the world’s larges oil and gas reserves and they might just be concerned about any hassle exploiting and selling it.
    Better not to have a world government on their backs later.

  25. Here are 2 more segments of the Russian source pdf from the Google translation followed by my comments:

    It is easy to see that the meteorological station located on the territory
    Russia is not entirely uniform, and their concentration significantly and predictably higher in
    western and southern parts of the country, while in the north and east – notably
    below.

    About half of the stations for which data were used in the calculations,
    located in rural areas. However, the proportion of used stations (from
    the total number of stations in a given category) increases rapidly with 19.1% for stations
    located in rural areas, up to 83.3% for stations located in cities
    millionaire. It would seem that there is a special need – the potential use
    data for stations located in the countryside, far from being exhausted.

    The authors of the document argue that the CRU calculated increase is 0.64C higher than what they think it should be (2.06C-1.42C). This means that there is a 45% exaggeration of the reported increase in global warming for Russia. The authors also note (see my 9:05 pm post) that this is a conservative estimate because the CRU discriminated against rural data and favoured urban data without accounting for the urban “heat-sink” effect. This means that the 45% exaggeration is a minimum exaggeration and the effect of the overstatement is unknown.
    There is one more thing. It was not mentioned in the article but it is a question that I had as I read the translated document. I will need to explain a few things before asking my question. The article mentions that Russia’s land mass is 12.5% of the world’s total. It then goes on to ask that in view of the CRU’s questionable methods and given Russia’s large land mass, the validity of the entire world’s climate dataset is called into question and should be recalculated. This seems a reasonable conclusion to me, but suppose someone else is not entirely convinced. There is a half step that can be taken before the full step of recalculating the entire world’s dataset is undertaken. If one examines a view from the North Pole, one can see that Russia borders about one half of the Arctic Ocean.
    http://igloo.atmos.uiuc.edu/cgi-bin/test/print.sh?fm=12&fd=08&fy=2007&sm=12&sd=08&sy=2009
    Because at least 50% of the land mass bordering the Arctic ocean has been calculated incorrectly (North America and Greenland have not yet been determined) and by such a large margin (at least a 45% error), should we not recalculate the entire Arctic Ocean dataset? There should not be a debate about this if the IEA report holds up.
    Interested readers should also note that it is the Arctic Ocean “warming” that we seem to hear so much of in the MSM. Therefore, this Russian data could account for all of the hype that is reported to the public.

  26. Abe, I agree with your comment. The Russians are pragmatists all the way through. They will do what’s in their interest, and won’t play the west’s favoured role of “guilty me, guilty me, I must be punished”.
