Reader Tips

Good evening, welcome to the Wednesday edition of SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight we present a song from troubled musical genius Jerry Lee Lewis, whose early music, at least, demonstrated his natural abilities in the essential skill which underlies (real) rock ‘n’ roll’s primal power: the seamless combining of swung and straight rhythms.
Lewis’ parents, members of the Assembly of God church, were devout Pentecosts who believed that “music to dance to from came from the devil,” and that “drinking and carousing with women would send him to hell.” This schism between his upbringing and his music might partially explain why Lewis — who was Jimmy Swaggart’s first cousin — seemed to be his own worst enemy; he often came across in interviews as being defensive and pointlessly arrogant at the same time. In performance, he seemed to be almost crawling out of his skin as he hammered out brilliantly off-timed, jacked beats on the piano and created a primal, prurient din of forward energy invigorated with a sense of can’t-stop-it-now straight-to-hell wrongdoing.
Without further ado, then, here’s Jerry Lee Lewis, a true iconoclast and one of the brilliant few who helped create and nail down rock ‘n’ roll’s distinct and unmistakable fusion of different idioms, in a 1965 performance of Breathless.
Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

  1. Ironically, alleged “hellion” Jerry-lee was morally superior to his bible thumping cousin, who used to pray loudly for JLL on his TV show, all the while carrying on with prostitutes off camera, and presumably out of sight of God.

  2. that would be Jimmy Lee Swaggart.
he could turn on the tears at the drop of a dollar.

  3. I bumped into a buddy of mine (Handsome Ned) back in about ’83 and he was on his way to see Jimmy Swaggarts gospel show. I was kinda taken aback and he tells me that Swaggart could rock just as good as his cousin Jerry Lee. You just had to catch him at the right moment. After that whenever I was flipping channels and saw Swaggart I would give him 10 or 15 minutes of my time to see what he would do. Well it took 26 years but one day Swaggart sits at the piano and cuts into some killer gospel. He was great and his band was amazing. I mean killer stuff.

  4. Jennifer McGuire to Head CBC News
    Full story
I will vehemently praise Ms. McGuire once I see some tangible evidence that she diversifies the points of view at the CBC beyond “The Left” and “The Far Left”.
Currently the taxpayer supported CBC News does not remotely represent the views and opinions of any Canadian who is slightly right of center or further right. Change that (even a modicum of balance would be a nice start) and the CBC will once again become an institution respected by a whole lot more citizens.

  5. A friend of mine once did a tour on one of those rock and roll revival shows as a guitar player backing up the bands. After the show he went out and had a couple drinks and when he got back to the hotel Jerry Lee and Carl Perkins were up on stage in the lounge doing karaoke. I’d of given my eye teeth to see that. It must have been hysterical.

  8. Only tingly legged reporters apply…
**According to reports, when the Politico’s Jonathan Martin asked the president about his nominee for deputy secretary of defense, William Lynn, Obama refused to answer, saying he was not there to take questions.
“I came down here to visit. I didn’t come down here — this is what happens. I can’t end up visiting you guys and shaking hands if I am going to grilled every time I come down here,” the president said.
Pressed further by the Politico reporter about his Pentagon nominee, Obama turned more serious, putting his hand on the reporter’s shoulder and staring him in the eye.
“All right, come on,” he said, with obvious irritation in his voice. “We will be having a press conference, at which time you can feel free to [ask] questions. Right now, I just wanted to say hello and introduce myself to you guys — that’s all I was trying to do,” Politico.com reported.**

“It’s Al Gore’s greatest frustration,” says Newport. “We seem less concerned than more about global warming over the years. . . . 17. I’ve been following the Indian election on BBC. Some of the stories have been ridiculous:
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/8035977.stm
    Some examples include:
    – “Police in the hotly-contested seat of Bathinda in Punjab, have registered a case against Congress legislator Mangatrai Bansal and several of his supporters for “attempted murder”.”
    – “At certain places in Patliputra and Nalanda, people are boycotting the poll because of defective voting machines.”
    – “In Punjab voting has just been suspended in Ferozepur constituency after a young Congress supporter was shot dead in the village of Ittanwali by political rivals allegedly belonging to the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal party. Police said the victim got into a fight over ownership of a mobile phone.”
    – “To entice voters, some of the restaurants and shops here have offered discounts of 10% to 20%. All those who show the ink mark of voting on their fingers can get money off.”

  18. Don’t know if you’ve all seen this yet but here is a PDF showing receipts of the payments between the Dhalla family and the nannies.
    Let’s do some math:
    $250.00 – Payment per week
$6.25 – Hourly rate if the nanny worked 40 hrs/wk
$4.17 – Hourly rate if the nanny worked 60 hrs/wk
$3.13 – Hourly rate if the nanny worked 80 hrs/wk
Priceless – The spin that Ruby Dhalla will make trying to explain this!

  19. Jerry Lee Lewis and Jimmy Swagert were BOTH cousins of Joe Biden. The resemblance is uncanny!!

  20. I do not agree with the author of the article in that he advises that people should quietly answer questions and not carry any material supporting Ron Paul – an elected senator. I think that anyone, in this young man’s situation, should make a BIG stink in public; ranting and raving about his rights guaranteed under the Constitution. Wake up his fellow citizens before it is too late.
The Jews went quietly on to those trains before Hitler had absolute power, and they gave the ‘state’ their firearms in the hope that they would be left alone. Nazism crept up on the German people like a silent, evil black smoke – the German people were in a financial crisis and they wanted to hold on to any financial security they could find (at that time Nazism was giving the German people the first iota of prosperity that they had know since prior to the First World War. In the Germany that Hitler took over inflation was rampid, Germany also had a HUGE war debt and no way to pay it – being broke and hungry makes people into predators and they ignore things that would, under normal circumstances, cause moral outrage.

  25. One evening in the late 1980’s, I’m at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, and into the lobby walks Mr. Lewis. He sits at the grand piano like he owns it, and just starts wailing out the tunes. The crowd that gathered was so large, the hotel management moved it to a larger room, where the impromptu party continued. In later conversations I learned that Mr. Lewis was a frequent visitor to downtown Memphis businesses that had pianos, and he was welcome at all of them, anytime, any day.
I had seen Jerry Lee Lewis perform live once before in Chattanooga in the early 1960’s when I was sixteen. A carload of us drove from northwest Georgia. Music was precious in those days because it was so hard to get it. A.M. radio gave us one to three stations that played rock ‘n roll, and the reception changed with the weather and time of day. Birmingham and Chattanooga stations were it in the daytime, and after dark, at the right places, we could listen to the best station in America, WLS in Chicago. America today, for music, is the land of plenty.

  26. The adoration continues, as reality transforms to fiction, as fiction moves in to supercede and drown any reality. Here’s a text over at Salon dot com.
“Our president bears a striking resemblance to the rational “Star Trek” Vulcan whose mixed race made him cultural translator to the universe.
    By Jeff Greenwald”
Henry Jenkins, co-director of MIT’s comparative media studies, and someone who obviously adores Obama-as-Text, says,
“The Vulcan side of Obama, the core of his character, and his character, hasn’t changed [since the election],” Jenkins believes. “He’s tough, he’s cool and he’s rational.” His appeal stems from the self-aware integration of all aspects of his personality: black and white, wonk and poet, athlete and aesthete.”
NOTE: rational? Obama? The man’s a pathological narcissist and long, long ago, retreated from the real world into one authored and controlled only by himself.
And, “Spock, as Jenkins gleefully asserts, is “someone who can bitch slap you with his brain.” It’s an ability shared by Obama — who, unlike Spock, doesn’t employ that superpower recreationally. His brilliance isn’t a defense (or defended by sarcasm). While Obama embodies Spock’s passion for reason, he adds the element of warmth.”
NOTE: Brilliance? Show some evidence of it. Has he ever analyzed anything, written anything? No. Reasoning? Obama is an emotional manipulator not a person who reasons from cause to effect. Indeed, this lack of any capacity to connect the dots is a serious flaw – and he relies on the back room to make the policies.
Greenwald continues: “Which is another reason why the sometimes audacious diplomacy of the Obama administration is innately appealing to those of us weaned on the credo of “exploring strange new worlds” and “seeking out new life and new civilizations.”
NOTE: Audacious diplomacy? Insulting the UK Prime Minister? Bowing to the SA King? Denigrating America all over the world? How’s that for ‘exploring strange new worlds’?
And – “Obama, like Spock, rewards close listening. His cool logic is a real departure from what we’ve grown used to.”
NOTE: Cool logic? Do you mean the ahhs and umms without his teleprompter?
But this is the adulation that Obama requires. Now, watch his behaviour when he doesn’t get it.

  27. Our Siamese cat Mr.Spock died last year; but, in hindsight we should have called him Bones.
I had to do a double take because I thought ET said bitch slapped but obviously that isn’t the case.
If BO is going to be Mr.Spock, for me he’s the Mr.Spock in episode no.24 “This Side of Paradise” hanging upside down from a tree giggling like a school girl while the Enterprise is in perril. If my memory is correct, the REAL STUD Capt.Kirk berated him and called him a “half-breed” and a “machine”. Ironic isn’t it, that TOTUS is compared to Mr.Spock who is compared to a machine.

  28. indian homez – heh, you’re right. I don’t use ‘language like that’. It was a quote.
But what is interesting is how the adulation types of the left, are textualizing someone who, himself, lives entirely in a fictional world.
As I’ve said, Obama, long ago disconnected himself from direct interaction with reality and developed a textual, a fictional world of which he alone was the author.
The only people permitted to enter this world were those whom he could control. Anyone else simply doesn’t exist or, if the individual persists in trying for an interaction, he’ll turn viciously against that person.
Now, when you have someone so disconnected from reality, and in addition, requiring that he alone author his own experience of reality – well, as long as that person can maintain control of his Book of His Life – OK. In addition to Obama’s requirement that his world is entirely fictional and written by himself – he also requires that in this world, he is King. He is adored.
But, as a president, this is very difficult. Reality exists outside of yourself, and someone as pathological as Obama can’t handle that external reality.
A key problem of anyone trying to interact with him is that in a sense, there is ‘no-one there’. You cannot interact with him on an equal basis. You are either allowed, by him, into his Text or you are outside the Text.
So, in his press conferences, you are pre-vetted, your questions pre-vetted and you are allowed into his Text, where he pontificates for hours rather than answer questions.
People not allowed in, such as FOX news..well, they are not in his Text.
Can he continue to act this way? Living, as it were, in a kind of ‘textual bubble’ immune from the world?

  29. Q1: For the first time in 80 years, Ford outsold GM
[Ford wasn’t all that far behind GM last year, but the marketplace has shifted in Ford’s favor. While a number of factors may play into that, could buyers have more confidence in Ford and its staying power for having opted out of the bailout? And could this also be a signal from consumers that they will punish GM and potentially Chrysler as well for taking taxpayer money, especially since bankruptcy will occur anyway?] hotair

  30. Notice the latest diktat from the HRCPolitburo: “must”.
    Who will “proceed” the “case”?
    …-
“Feds must hear senator harassment case: tribunal
Ottawa — Ontario’s Human Rights Tribunal has ruled that a sexual harassment complaint against Senator Patrick Brazeau must be heard at the federal level.
The tribunal says it has no jurisdiction to hear the case because the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples, once led by Mr. Brazeau, is federally regulated. The case can now proceed before the Canadian Human Rights Commission.
Mr. Brazeau says an independent report cleared him of misconduct.”
