  1. Frankly, I think this is a bit of an overreaction. The only real different between the CTV graph and the graphs on Hunter’s blog are the way the portraits are arranged (which is still bad but not ultra-super bad).
Sadly, there are few other ways we can spin this, what with this abandonment of fiscal conservatism that makes the Libs (the Libs!) look good.

  2. Nautical, would you recognize the difference between “use it or lose it” programs such as the Conservatives have instituted which last for two years, and a day care program that the Liberals want and that lasts forever and costs how many billion per year?

  3. I always knew there was something odd about uncle Lloyd lately…ever since he lost his right hand man and drinking buddy Harvey, he’s definately developed a left leaning tilt, and you just can’t trust anything he says anymore…

  4. I hope Hunter sends his graphs to CTV. Not that it would do much good but, you know?, for the record.
IMO, our media is one of the major hindrances to the working of democracy in Canada. They need a major clean-out and shake-up, though they’re never likely to institute it themselves. It’s ironic that they, who think they’re enlightened, open, tolerant, blah, blah, blah, are, in reality, blinkered, biased, and bamboozled by the lib-left bulldozer that’s been plouging its way through Canadian politics since Trudeau.
Maybe our not watching their “news” programs and not buying their papers will give them the message. Duh.

  5. On its face this would be a simple case of bad web/flash design. I wad no problem seeing the dates and thought that CTV had put up a revision after being called on this. If I reduce the screen resolution the dates disappear and get the graph Hunter complains about.
Of course the conspiracy theorist in me might suspect that this was intentional to create plausible deniability. “What biased reporting? You can’t blame us because most people have their screen resolution set lower than 1280×960.” Going back only 20 years, to Black Monday, only serves to prove the deliberate “error” in flash programming.

  6. Ignore the facts people, words, numbers and data have no place in the news. Why try to assimilate all the data when the media can sketch a graph to give you a (rough) idea of what they want you to think.

  7. the propaganda spewed on CTV(tass) is worse than on CBCpravda because people expect it to be unbiased whereas everyone in the country knows CBCpravda is the taxpayer funded propaganda arm of the Liberal party.

  8. Thanks for the link Kate! As for the screen resolution, that graph is what I saw both at work and home, so I wonder how many others see what I did? How would the average person know to change their screen resolution?

  9. Only a liberal or a moron, or a youngster could not remember the communist Turdough borrowing and running up our deficits. Diefenbaker inherited a 750, million dollar debt, Pearson ran it up with welfare programs, Turdough, Power Corp boy, took over in 68 and when the commie left in 84 Canada was in debt around 229 BILLION. There’s your lieberal legacy folks. Interest rates worldwide rose quickly and the debt under Mulroney , another Power Corp boy, went to around 450 Billion, then another Power Corp bor Cretin massaged it up to 560 Billion. Martin, the saviour from Power Corp, tried to keep it stable, Harper has had to inherit this along with an angry lieberal press here in Canada, who would want this job!

  10. There are two deficits, an operational and a structural.
Both are where there isnt enough revenue to cover expenses. Trudeau drove the government into structural deficit, not only was the government not covering interest payments but also day to day expenses.
Mulroney moved Canada to an operational surplus by 1985/86. The deficit was caused by interest payments on the accumulated debt, high debt to GDP and high interest rates…a killer combination.
Mulroney even maintained an operational surplus thorugh the 1990/91 recession, which was more sever than the one we are currently in.
The GST started to p1ss money about 92/93 and the Libs did a smart thing with their structural review, they also raided the EI surplus and slashed transfers to the porvinces, oh and interest rates fell. Thats the story of the deficit. Trudeau and his finance ministers are the total villians in this story, Mulroney and his finance ministers are the tragic heroes, who tried but couldnt get victory, and Martin is the white Knight who arrives to push it over the top.
Dont’ fool yourself, the Liberals fought EVRY SINGLE CUT under the conservatives, said deficit criticism was overblown. Their reputation as spenders hasnt changed, they jsut got to th poitn where they could be high taxers.
Now that taxes have come down the Liberals are still spenders, unless the run on a platform of raising taxes then we will see increases in deficits that will become like Trudeau.
I need to dig into the federal numbers to see they are still runnig an operational surplus, ie if we had no debt we wouldnt be in debt. It is an important line to avoid if you can.
Of course all of this is too much for the media, who live in todya and dont care about any sense of history, unless it is reinforcing some overromaticized “Canadian Tradition” like rail travel….rmemeber that one when Via Rail cuts were gfoing to happen, I think they even wheeled out Pierre Berton to oppose those.
It just goes to show that Canada is an very wealthy society if it can afford to engage in indulgences like those debates.

  11. And who idea was it for the GST and Free Trade that made the Lieberals look good. Lest we forget.
P.S. Who purchased the tanks without air, canceled the helicopters and put the troops on the ground and sent them off to war in VW’s if they could hitch a ride.
Look Statistics Canada that shows the massive decreases in farms and rural population across Canada under the Lieberals. History tells the story.

  12. I am sure hoping that PMSH is successful in his budget. Being a very good leader so far in his opposition and his minority leadership, he has shown that he has a very good grasp on the economy and what the average working person needs. The Conservatives kicking the libs & ndps asses down the sidewalk has been very pleasant to watch and comment on.

  13. Only Canadians would pay to have a Broadcaster lie to them. The worthless CBC is in Canadian genes & CTV has just followed the winning trend.
They don’t need to provide a competent opinion, they can hire directly from the drunk-tank, as long as the sad talent can read a teleprompter.
Be honest! Canadians can’t take the truth.

  14. Agreed Slap Shot, but given that we don’t need a competent opinion and are we not receiving same, do we really need duplicate opinions? Right! So lets get rid of the CBC. I mean in these ‘hard economic times’, cuts are required, and what better place to start?

  15. This is the key table in the budget, table 4.4 Sumamry Statement of Transactions.
    http://www.budget.gc.ca/2009/plan/bpc4-eng.asp
What you see is that the government will go into a small operational deficit this year, I wish they had avoided it, but it is only 4.2 billion, matched by an almost equivalent operational surplus next year. Once again this means that government isnt paying for its day to day operations in 2009/2010 but is in 2010/2011 except for interest.
This is important, since a line was crossed this year (bad bad Cons) but gets avoided next year, (good Cons)
The operational deficit is small, the ineterest charges are small and the debt relative to GDP is small. Big picture, this isnt too bad, but that operational deficit would have been best avoided, a feat even Mulroney acheived in 1990/91.
Cause of the deficits is two fold
    1) Drop in revenue by 4.8%, they dont break down the causes of that, there are two, drop in rates and drop in activity
    2) Increase in expenditures by 9.7% in year 1
So opposition concerns about “tax cuts” are overblown. This is an increase in expenditures driven deficit, which is what “EVERYBODY” asked for.
As I said my big concern is the operational deficit. If it lasts one year and is as small as indicated then this is minor. If things arent as advertised and the operational deficit is larger or continues then the water is starting to boil.
These are the numbers to watch

  16. Just wondering how the graph would look if Chretien and Martin (with the help of Goodale and Wastas Kin-sella) didn’t illegally steal $54 billion from EI fund.

  17. We have to realize fully that CTV, CBC are engaged in the kind of dishonest reporting we see so much of from BBC, NBC, ABC, CNN. THEY have a vested interest in putting on television the fantasies that propel their favourites onto the political stage.
Why this is so might have a lot to do with who owns them and who runs them.
Certainly not the taxpayer, who benefits from the kind of political stewardship that is represented in Stephen Harper and the Conservatives. Nothing is perfect in this world, but if this is the best we get out of our government with a few tax cuts here and there and a deficit every once in awhile, I can live with it. I would rather have a few tax cuts and suffer a deficit ( let’s face it surplus of any kind in government is simply OVER taxation) and have a steady hand on the helm of government than these thirsty liberals looking to regain power any way they can so THEY can have their hands on the money for THEIR benefit, not ours and for THEIR friends, not our bottom line. WE hire these people. The least we could expect is honesty. Liberals, NDP, ARE NOT honest.
Gilles Duceppe IS honest. He makes NO bones about the fact he is using the system to further HIS aims: Separation.
Stephen Harper is honest in the way he heads the Conservative government. He is smart and has outsmarted all of them so far. THAT is what they have against him. He has taken their dishonesty and lies and turned them on themselves. Mr. Ignatieff may one day be PM but he will not do it honestly.
They say that ignorance costs us more than any war or silly government programs combined and I agree with that sentiment.
We KNOW liberals lie to get in office and lie, cheat AND steal to STAY in office.
Accusing others of what they are guilty of has worked on ignorant electorate in the past and they are hoping , as time goes by, it will work again.
Let’s remember ONE thing: Politicians are elected to do ONE thing. Govern in our best interests.
This budget makes it clear that the conservatives and PM Harper have that in mind and also have in mind the greedy liberals , who are in a position to bring the government down and have beat them at their own game. Mr. Ignatieff needs time and he is buying for time in his insulting and arrogant ‘on probation’ pronouncements.
What infuriates me is that IF we had a more informed electorate the Conservatives would now have a majority in Parliament , ensuring we would not have had to endure the nonsense that was the Coalition , the demise of Dion and the rise of Ignatieff. He is haughty, cerebral and COLD.
I don’t want him or the liberals running ANYTHING. THEY DON’T CARE.
I know Stephen Harper cares and so do the Conservative MPs. That comes across loud and clear right through the screen.
The tax cuts in the budget do not go far enough or deep enough to suit me. I deal with tax forms often so I can see readily where we could benefit much more. However, for a minorty government to have achieved what they have says to me that they are working hard to better the lives of Canadians while warding off the jackels at the door who would devour this government and any tax breaks we have had these last few years as soon as they get the chance. And are anxious for the feeding frenzy on our tax dollars to begin. IF anything shows on Ignatieff’s face, THAT does.

  18. The graph appears to show a HUGE deficit run by Mulroney … which most of you seem to forget was the reason he stuck us with the GST and we ousted the lot of them!!
Looks like history is going to repeat itself and it will show another HUGE deficit run by another supposed conservative government. The graphs make the Libs look like fiscal prudes.

  19. again a lot of words about a simple subject. the comments at hunters site were interesting. one thing that no one mentioned was the inflation from 1970 to 1980. our dollar lost it’s purchasing power big time. i think about three times it’s value. i was spending alot of them in those days so i remember the price icreases. they also used to publish the m1 numbers, currency in circulation etc. even a fool could see the increase and where we were going.

  20. Well-said, Snowbunnie.
The Librano$ (for that’s exactly who these thugs are) want power only for their own aggrandisement and Canadians’ hard-earned tax dollars. They care nothing for the average working family, but talk a good line, at least to the brainwashed, uninformed voters, which make up quite a lot of the Canadian population.
I just heard an idiotic statement by the NDP spokesman (he WAS a man) on Don Newman’s Politics to the effect that if the Obamessiah speaks to the House of Parliament he’ll “put Prime Minister Stephen Harper to shame” because OB has just signed some decree about women’s rights, yada, yada, yada.
I turned to my husband and said, “‘Funny thing that the Librano$ and the NDP harp on about the Conservatives’ not championing women’s rights when, right before their blinded-by-bitterness eyes, the CPC has more women in their caucus than any of the other parties.”
Urban Myth, aka Liberal Lie: The CPC don’t support women’s rights.
    One amongst many.

  21. I wonder how Jerry Ritz feels today. Confused would be a major understatement. He makes a joke about 17 people dying from a Maple Leaf mistake and it is a national disgrace, Obama makes a joke about weather that kills 20 people and it is an international belly laugh.
