Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation and pursuant to our Twelve Days of Christmas shows, here is an old favourite of ours at SDA Late Nite Radio, the inimitable Miss Dolly Parton performing Smoky Mountain Christmas (2:03). And for tonight’s flip-side and for our friends even farther south, here is Mr. Louis Armstrong performing Christmas In New Orleans (3:02).
Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

By the way, I’ve been slowly working through Ulysses S. Grant‘s Personal Memoirs, and I found this quote, from the end of chapter 15, in respect of 1852 San Francisco, interesting:
Some things never change, eh what?
Some things never change,eh what?
Sorta like this,Vitruvius??
“Ontario will now have 21 more seats in the House of Commons as the federal government quietly agreed to give in to the province’s demand for greater representation.
Originally, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said that Ontario would receive 10 seats in the House under a revamped distribution plan meant to reflect a growing population in the province as well as Alberta and British Columbia.
However, on Wednesday, Premier Dalton McGuinty told reporters that he and Harper had come to an understanding when they met in Ottawa last Friday.”

Do you say Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays?
For some people it’s a dilemma: 21 percent say they feel obligated to say “Happy Holidays” — incorporating Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and, perhaps, the Winter Solstice or the Seinfeldian Festivus into their seasonal hello.
But they are still a considerable minority. A full 77 percent of Americans say they say “Merry Christmas,” according to a FOX News poll released Tuesday.
Democrats (28 percent), urbanites (28 percent) and Northeasterners (25 percent) are among those more likely to say they feel pressured to use a generic “Happy Holidays” greeting.
On the flip side, Republicans (87 percent), regular churchgoers (82 percent) and rural Americans (83 percent) are more likely to say “Merry Christmas,” the poll found.
I posted this on a much earlier posting but I think many missed it…

I’m getting more optimistic that AGW is indeed unraveling but I’m not quite counting my chicks yet. The left-wing nutbars that want to control our lives through eco-fascist policies (because communism didn’t work) have a good, solid 15-20 years effort invested in this scam called global warming.
I do expect the screeching to increase, but this war isn’t won yet.

Has anyone seen a blog posting in the past few days talking about the 3 or 4 century records of housing valuation in Europe? They show a long term (centuries) trend of .2% per year for housing increases. It was a meme that was bounced around and if anyone remembers where I would love to see you post a link here. Google searches yielded mountains of useless crap, and I clear my browser daily, so this request is my next step.

I have argued with my liberal friends that George Bush is not a true conservative and the reason his poll ratings are so low is that real conservatives are pissed off at his many liberal policies (no child left behind, seniors pharmacare, immigration amnesty, etc). This 21 seat increase for Ontario was mentioned on Duffy today also.
Apparently CPC strategy is to give Ontario the seats and hope to win a bunch of them because they are mainly outside the Toronto area.
It also means that the CPC has thrown Quebec under the bus politically because they never win there anyway.
Why bother?
I was saying that years and years ago.
Especially when the population growth area of the country is the West where they can win much more easily. And the West will also get an increase in seats for its population increase, so its win-win for the CPC.
The arrogant Crooked Liberals never thought twice about throwing the West under the bus, so turnabout is fair play.

There are so many valid reasons to go after left wing lunacy that it really bothers me when people decide to play fast and loose with numbers and stats to try and make a non-case.
The numbers that Allan mentions from the Fox poll are more honestly reported as 72% of Democrats and urbanites and 75% of Northeasterners wish people a Merry Christmas. So, not all that different than Republicans, regular church goers and rural Americans.
And please, explain to me how regular church goers and rural Americans are the flipside of urbanites and Northeasterners.
Ain’t we on the right, supposed to be the ones that are issue oriented? Do we really want to go down the liberal road of generating storys out of whole cloth?

“McGuinty to big banks: ‘No’”
…-
Jen Says:
“Well Dalton, same the same thing for the CAW, tell them no more money and strikes- tell them Dalton.”
nomdeblog Says:
““The banks, which already benefit from lower capital taxes,”
Why on earth were they taxing the Banks’ capital in the first place? Don’t Banks need as much capital as possible? Well the answer is : Because they were successful. Socialists hate success. Particularly if it isn’t unionized and they can’t intervene and buy union votes.
If you want less of something Dalton: tax it!
So Dalton taxes the Canadian owned winners to subsidize the American owned losers. Again, why would he do that? Unions!
Dalton is Rene LeWreck II in the making. First a bank will move to Vancouver where Premier Campbell has made it clear he wants to be a financial center on the Pacific Rim. We all know what banks do … they are like sheep, if one moves, they’ll all be out there in no time.
Don’t worry Dalton, you’ll still have your Little 3 automotive companies who will always need you, the only problem is that you won’t have any healthy businesses left to tax to buy those union votes with.
This isn’t just about banks .. Dalton LeWreck II has the 3rd highest taxes on all businesses. What he doesn’t realize is that they aren’t like a mine shaft, they can move.
Finally, if he were to cut taxes, tax revenues would go up not down. Businesses thrive on tax cuts. If he wants to deal with getting the economy back to work he could start with the York U government union that has kept 50,000 students out of class for 5 weeks.”

GANDI LIKED GUNS?
Annoy your Liberal gun-hating friends with this surprising, but perhaps disingenuous, quote:
‘Among the many misdeeds of the British rule in India, history will look upon the Act depriving a whole nation of arms as the blackest.
You can leave out the context which I found here and let them do their own research. I leave it to you to decide if you agree with this site’s claim about the context:
A quote advanced to support the armed populace fantasy is from Mohandas Gandhi, the leader of nonviolent resistance to British rule in India. His objective of Indedepence was achieved in 1947. Gandhi wrote in Chapter XXVII, “The Recruiting Campaign,” in his autobiography, My Experiments with Truth:
“Arms” in this context were military arms not the personal weapons of private individuals. The context of “depriving of the whole nation of arms” was the refusal of the British to conscript Indians into the British Army during the First World War. Gandhi was an extreme anti-militarist. The statement is odd coming out of him, but he used the circumstance for political purposes to advance the cause of Home Rule and Independence.

Electricity-generating road under development in Israel
By Justin Couture, Sympatico/MSN Autos
…Though it sounds like a farfetched idea, a small stretch of road in Israel capable of producing electricity will undergo testing next month.
Underneath the surface of asphalt, roadway engineers fitted a layer of piezoelectric crystals, which generate an electric current when pressure is applied to them. This would allow the road to capture the energy that a car or truck transfers to the ground when it drives by.
Its developers say that the one-kilometre stretch of road is capable of generating 400 kW of energy, enough to power eight small cars…
friend of usa – what happens to the herd of deer crossing the road? What happens to the jogger pounding along the road?
If the energy source is removed from inside the car, and located on the path (eg, an electric train connected via an overhead wire) doesn’t this bond the vehicle to the energy source? What happens when it leaves this energy source (the road)?

Kate,
The Global Warming, oops Climate Change, concensus claimers may have a problem here:
Wed Dec 17, 9:56 AM
The cold that’s gripped the Canadian Prairies this week could stick around well into the New Year, Environment Canada predicts in its seasonal forecast.
Senior climatologist Dave Phillips told CBC’s Information Radio Wednesday that Manitobans can look forward to a colder than normal winter from January through March.
Winter officially arrives on Sunday, but Western Canada has been shivering in temperatures 15 to 20 degrees below normal since last week.
Phillips predicted Manitobans won’t be putting the long johns away for a while. “My gosh, when cold air arrives, usually you’re in there for week after week,” he said. “And we’ve seen it already and it may be really the preview of what winter is going to be like.”
There might be the odd respite from below-normal temperatures, but those periods will be short-lived, he said.
“What we’re seeing is no El Nino saviour here,” Phillips said. “No Pacific breeze. Now … even in a colder than normal winter you will have some melting that goes on. I mean, hey, there’s a better than a 50-50 chance that you’re going to have a January thaw.”
But at least it’s a bright, dry cold, Phillips said. “Your saving grace is your great sunshine.”
CBC meteorologist John Sauder said long-term seasonal forecasts involve analyzing upper atmospheric conditions, which can be hit and miss.”
http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/cbc/081217/canada/winnipeg_cold_forecast_1
The award for understatement: “(L)ong-term seasonal forecasts involve analyzing upper atmospheric conditions, which can be hit and miss.” So remind me, Dr. Suzuki, Mr. Gore, Dr. Hanson et al, how on earth (no pun originally intended) can the masses be expected to believe those terror-inducing decade or longer forecasts in that ‘concensus’ visited upon us by this triumvirate and others? (Perhaps, in keeping with the Christmas season, we should ask if they the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, or Future? But what the Dickens do I know?)
Ze’ev Maghen, Eradicating the “Little Satan”
The accession of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to the presidency of the Islamic Republic of Iran has been accompanied by a sharp transformation in the Iranian attitude to, and depiction of, the state of Israel. This change includes not only an amplification of the traditional hostility toward the Jewish polity, but also—most ominously—a new conception of that polity as weak and unstable, an easy target for a united Muslim (or united Shiite) offensive.
The prevailing opinion among Middle East experts and Iran watchers, however, is that the revised rhetoric is just that—rhetoric—and that it harbors no significant ramifications for policy-making on the part of Israel or any other states in the region or the world. Vociferous Iranian declarations about the need to erase Israel from the map are seen as nothing more than a means toward achieving certain pragmatic goals, such as eventual détente with the West.
This view is wrong. Iranian-Islamist threats to Israel’s existence are sincere, and they signal the determined pursuit of tenaciously-held ends…

“Jack Layton to move into Stornoway as leader of the opposition.
An AWM exclusive: Don’t call the movers yet Iggy.
Having had his plans of being in a coalition cabinet thwarted by newly anointed interim Liberal leader Micheal Ignatieff; Jack Layton has made a deal with Bloc leader Gilles Duceppe that would have the NDP named as the official opposition with Layton as leader.
Similar to the failed tripartite coalition agreement the 2 parties are expected to approach the Speaker of the House of Commons with a letter of intent outlining their cooperation in forming the official opposition as their 2 parties combined have more seats than the now current official opposition Liberals.
An NDP insider said; “If Mr. Ignatieff will not honour the coalition agreement that he signed then we have no other choice but to do what Canadians have already strongly voiced with their votes in the last election.” adding that “74% of Canadians voted against the Liberals being the official opposition and we are following along with the great traditions of our democracy by doing what the voters intended.”

If this trick gets Blago off scot free, Bill Ayers should consider copyrighting “Guilty as hell, free as a bird; America’s a great country” and start collecting royalties(1)
“Attorney Ed Genson told the House impeachment committee Thursday that the federal wiretaps were illegal.
…
“Genson told the impeachment committee that it shouldn’t consider any material from the wiretaps, saying the evidence was “illegally obtained.””
The comments suggest Blagojevich’s legal defense may include challenging whether the recordings can be introduced in court.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081218/ap_on_re_us/illinois_governor
(1) “Back in the early eighties, in an interview with David Horowitz and Peter Collier, Bill Ayers remembered his reaction upon learning that he would not be prosecuted by the government for his bombing spree as a member of the Weather Underground. “Guilty as hell, free as a bird—America is a great country,” he exulted.”

So, replace ‘eighties’, with ‘teenies’, interviewers with whoever you want, ‘Bill Ayers’ with ‘Rod Blagojevich’, ‘bombing spree as a member of the Weather Underground’ with ‘senate seat-selling as a state governor and member of the Democrats’ and as the French say, “plus ca change, plus c’est le meme”.

Anti-Communists behead Communist women’s rights activist in Iraq — no, wait…
All we hear from CNN is that “gunmen” did this, and that “violence against women” — by whom? For what reason and from what cause? — “has been an ongoing problem in Iraq.” But the fact that Nahla Hussain was beheaded places suspicion upon those who believe that it is a divine command to “strike at the necks” of the unbelievers (Qur’an 47:4).
