The Sound Of Settled Science

Via NRO;

BBC News, July 30, 2007:
A new analysis of Atlantic hurricanes says their numbers have doubled over the last century. The study says that warmer sea surface temperatures and changes in wind patterns caused by climate change are fuelling much of the increase.
BBC News, May 18, 2008:
Hurricanes and tropical storms will become less frequent by the end of the century as a result of climate change, US researchers have suggested. But the scientists added their data also showed that there would be a “modest increase” in the intensity of these extreme weather events.

Related“Three prominent researchers agree, two have reversed positions. This I think it is safe to declare the “Increased hurricanes to global warming link” as DEAD.”

  1. Well, yeah, but they’re just scientists. It’s not like they have any knowledge of “What’s Really Happening” like the Goreacle or Doc Fruitfly. I bet these science types never made a movie, or got a Nobel Prize. They must be charlatans.
    *sigh*

  2. This is irrefutable proof that the climate will be getting warmer or cooler and that the number of hurricanes in the future will either increase, decrease or stay the same. “Tweaking” the computer models will show that they would have predicted whatever will happen if only the following parameters had been adjusted: _____. Meanwhile, in the ongoing search for the Philosopher’s Stone . . .

  3. Waaay back in 1998, when the hystericysts were in vogue, Dr Gray of Colorado State was already saying that global warming would cause Less hurricanes. This was promptly ignored as it did not fit the program of panicing the public over an entirely natural situation which the Earth has gone through millions of times already.
I would not be surprised if it is eventually learned that the Vikings were able to range / explore as far as they did 1000 years ago, precisely Because the Earth was nearly 2 degrees C warmer then than it is today, and hurricanes were far less frequent.
Side note: nasa had predicted that the sun would kick into Cycle 24 this month. This after predicting it would kick in this past March; before that, last October; before that, January of last year; Before that, in 2006.
Looks like they are going to be wrong yet again. The coming years of Cold will wipe out the hopes of agw hystericysts worldwide.

  4. ah…the Vikings….i believe they called it Vinland or Greenland…and for a very good reason.

  5. I suspect that the number of hurricanes doubled because they weren’t even aware of some hurricanes in times gone by, whereas today the instrumention etc picks them all up. Scarcely a real doubling!

  6. The “best” scams are the ones that are hard to prove, either way – at least initially. Global Warming is one that was not even in the ‘at least initially’ catagory as many knew it was a scam right from the get go. (But the Media gave it it’s legs)
Even Snake Oil could not be proven to not grow hair until the bottle was empty.
Hurricanes are an ideal tool for the Alarmists. Canes are scary, they occur in hot weather, they provide dramatic news clips, but most of all, it ‘appears’ that they occur more frequently now because of better surveillance – satillites, planes, ect.
Al Gore is nothing if not the most successful Snake Oil Salesman of all time.
Wiki should give him his due.
Coleman should give him a subpoena.

  7. As far as Brit “scientists” go, “Nature” is still adhering to the True Faith.
Nature used to be a great scientific journal, with a really dull cover. Now their covers are waaaaay cool …

  8. All the bunk and bull kaka about this global warming proves that AL GORE is abare faced liar and politician who gets cuaght up in it are ether crooks or suckers

  9. Wasn’t princess charles just yamering about the “tipping point”? Would some one please call and tell him to change his story along with his next underwear change!!!!

  10. I listened to an interview with some Oregon teenagers concerning the democratic nomination. When asked about the #1 issue it was unanimously the environment. They all believed that not only would finding alternative energy sources save the planet, it would create an economic windfall for the US. Wow.
It dawned on me that this group of graduates has been fully indoctrinated from elementary school on. Not only do they believe the AGW theory, they know of no other point of view. It’s become knowledge, and that’s hard to argue with.
So how far down the road to economic disaster will they go before they see the light? Probably to the bitter end.

  11. Global warming and climate change are so yesterday. Global food shortages caused by greedy capitalists and Big Oil are now the greatest challenge facing the world, and BEARS!

  12. Well, better late than never. If anyone is reading this then RealClimate has a well thought out response.
A couple of take away points from it:
    1) The results are based on model projections, so if anyone is accepting this paper then they automatically accept GCMs.
    2) The resolution of the model they used was about 20 km cells. It is estimated that you would need 1 km cells to accurately pick up hurricane formation (i.e. their grid would not allow some of the smaller starting hurricanes develop).
    3) While it is somewhat off topic I note that it is interesting to see what is worthy of a press release:

It has been brought to our attention by NOAA representatives that the NOAA press conference for the Knutson et al paper was not an unprecedented event in recent years. In fact, similar press conferences were held for two other papers (both also questioning the premise that climate change is likely to lead to an increase in tropical cyclone activity) by Wang and by Vecchi and Soden

Must be that “media bias” they go on about.
    John
