    I quit smoking. It can be done. Nobody forced me to smoke. And I had far less knowledge about the nature of addictions than, say, a trained medical doctor…

    If Warren is really SO upset about smoking, he shouldn’t in good conscience back a smoker for president.

  12. The ironic thing (well, when it comes to Kinsella, hypocrisy) is that he is a registered lobbyist for both Labatt’s Brewery and the Canadian chemical industry.
    So, he has no problem with booze killing people, or damages from chemicals (he’ll probably be on a paid-for bender against the Tories for banning bisphenol-a very soon). But tobacco? Dangerous stuff…

    If the target is Warren….yes would need to address, but our friend keeps things so compartmentalized his sould looks like a gym locker room.
    Example is the outrage over anything Nazi related yet he proudly keeps a poster of Joy Division in his office (great band, controversial name…I wonder if Bernie Farber has ever asked him about it)
    So maintaining a hate for all things tobacco, his notorious hate for norman spector until he apparently turned on Brian Mulroney, is another indication. If Normans alleged Tobacco lobbying, which Norman has said wasnt his job, was such a bad thing you think the dislike would be enduring. Yet it is tossed aside when there is an animus that takes up a larger part of the “spittle screened, rage a holic’s” (nice phrase Mr Kay) tunnel vision.
    So I expect his love for Obama (who I like as well making me a board member minority) will trump his dislike for all tobacco related things. They will never meet and never compete as one is locked in gym locker 64 B with a combination or 13-26-42 and the other in 153 A with a combination that uses a key.
    Out of sight out of mind.

    I hear that a lot. That’s over stated. I smoked for 33 years and not one cigarette was because someone made me, or told me to, or even suggested I should. I did it, ME, and I am the only one responsible for it. That’s fact.

    Of course WK has no beef with individual smokers. Showing some self-responsibility is something that doesn’t fit with WK’s blame-game. It’s always easier to blame someone else for your own problems, rather than admitting your stupidity.

  22. Lots of blame….an addictive drug that causes harm was marketed….the amount of harm is what really does it in…..alcohol and caffine do some levels of harm as well….as do starches which also are addictive….but the not the same amount of addictiveness or in the same amounts to different people.
    However, there is personal responsibility involved as well. But the corp cant avoid responsibility for the liabilities the product creates. Think about how angry people are about the bad toys coming out of China. Companies have some responsibility for their product. But as someone said nobody forced you to start nor did they stop you from giving it up.
    Kathy, why blame the Indians when you can blame God?

  25. Smokers don’t bother me. I was one once a long time ago. Obama a smoker? Oh well. However, if they had the same laws as Canada, I would look forward to seeing pictures of him sneaking out of the white house to grab a few puffs in the middle of winter. I always got a chuckle out of the little groups you would see in down town Toronto trying to huddle in between buildings to get out of the wind.

    JFK used to hide his cigaratte/cigar, cupped in his hand, I believe. Even while descending airplane ramps.
    Does any subject better separate the conservative/libertarian from the lib-lefties than this one: death by choice vs. death by evil corporations?
    Yeah, I did too until age 25. Doc showed me pics of burnt pot roasts (smokers lungs) and told me, matter of factly with zero bleeding heart concern, that if I continued I’d lose my larynx. Walked out of the office, threw away a pack of cigarettes and an expensive lighter. Done.
    Of course these were the pre-therapeutic-society days when you could just decide and do it. Heh, I’m a “recovering smoker” right?

    He’s desperate, and it’s a dangerous high-stakes game that he has entered , except he has nothing personally to lose.
    Conversely the people of Canada have everything to lose.

  32. So what Obama smokes? Think of the savings to the US government when it shuts down all of the anti-tobacco programs that pushes anti-smoking advocacy into the schools in the USA. With one photograph, Obama will undo it all.
    And all of those Carolina farmers that are desperately looking for something else to grow – how can he look them in the eye and feel their pain?
    So what if your leader is a hypocrit? If that becomes OK, then we might as well just end this democracy charade, save the airtime wasted on leader debates, the ink squandered on editorial columns, all of the television advertising and production.
    In place of policy and honest disclosure as the means of choice, I suggest a phone-in show format, such as “American Idle”. Or dancing. How about Battle of the Bands? Next thing you know, you could be governed by Excrement From Hell.

  42. Look – with the amount of smoke Obama is blowing up American’s arses he needs to get it from somewhere. I therefore am not at all surprised to learn that he smokes. But what a great role model for the generation is he trying to attract to him. His new campaign slogan should be “Yes, We Can Puff”.
    One should never be to quick to judge, though. I once thought that Bubba Clinton smoked cigars then found out later that he did other things with them.

  43. I’m not a particularly big fan of Obama and I certainly don’t want to get into a “smoking” or “non-smoking” slugfest, but …. Who cares if he smokes? Does the fact that he smokes have any effect on his ability to govern? I think not.
    As for Kinsella’s anti-smoking stance … Oh well. Anti-smoking zealotry has developed into a very, very lucrative enterprise. Between government grants and generous contributions from Big Pharma, there’s no end to the funding.

  50. Now if Obama had only dropped out of school when he was 15 years old, worked at Wal-Mart for minimum wage, held racist opinions, and lived in a trailer park, then he would fit in amongst the regular readers here.
    It would be perfect if he air brushed pre-fab ceramic animals that are made by the thousands in China, along with paint-by-number motel drawings AND had the audacity to call it ‘art’!!!
