Stealth Candidates

Do you think it’s izzy to get your party discipline in public with you?

The federal Liberals are in a Montreal court today trying to block a newspaper from publishing a list of party candidates lined up to run in Quebec.
The party says some of its star candidates won’t run in the next election if their names are prematurely disclosed by Montreal’s La Presse.
Leader says some people who’ve agreed to run for the party don’t want their names revealed until an election is called.
[…]
The list of candidates has been closely guarded and Hervieux-Payette did not hide her annoyance that someone, presumably at a senior level of the party, has leaked it to the media. She stopped short, however, of calling it sabotage.

Because some things are self-evident, I suppose.
According to other comments threads, this has prompted entertaining exchanges on the TV punditry circuit. Let me know if anything Youtubey comes up.

  1. Tadaaa…the nefarious Liberal Party Mole strikes again…way to go on those party unity and solidarity issues, Steffie…

  2. From the braaaawdcast: Jim Travers..a blatant Lib supporter says,’Dion has moved from an object of derision,to an object of PITY!He has no toes to shoot off anymore, and something about needing new shoes(didn’t catch it all)Refers to the court challenge to block publication of the ‘list’ as ludicrous, and it ‘highlights the division in the party’
Travers was on Adler as well, and just ripped Dion. Both Travers,Lessard on Newman were laughing about the whole thing..even Newman seemed amused.
OT I know, but watched House of Commons after QP today, and as much as I dislike the Dippers,I gotta hand it to Mulcair. When debating over the NDP motion,he was on quite a roll, refers to the Libs as birdbrains, with no convictions. Then(refers to Bob Rae)..”I can hardly wait to hear what the new star from Toronto center has to say” and says Boob has ‘sold out’ Mulcair was loud, and fired up,and the Cons lovin it!
What a great time to be a political junkie!!

  3. I can smell the blood: Travers, Newman, every leftard in the MSM, is hot to see Dion deep-sixed. They desperately want Bob Rae, backed by the powerful–ta da–Power Corp, as the LPC leader, to put their gold-plated Senate-cash-for-life-Seats back on target.
Their glee, disguised as mere amusement, is so transparent you’d think they’d tone it down so as not to give the plot away. The Palace Coup is in place in the Natural Ruling Party, with the MSM stooges hanging out in the background.
‘Don’t know just how the Libs are going to get around all the legal technicalities to unseat the present LPC leader in order to put Bob Rae on the throne but, no doubt, with Power Corp and all the attendant courtiers as Rae’s loyal supporters, where there’s a will (a crown?) there’s a way…

  4. If I were going to run for the Liberal party I would be too embarrassed to have it known any sooner than necessary as well.

  5. Pol-junkies … more here from G-M.
Boob, Mao’s Nephew say, No mockely. Not fail.

  6. Don’t know just how the Libs are going to get around all the legal technicalities to unseat the present LPC leader
A caucus revolt would do the trick. As a Con I would hate to see the gift that never stops giving leave. So I hope things don’t get out of hand.
There was a series of articles last week describing how the Cons are now concerned they might be over doing the Yorkshire Terrier/Rag Doll thing with Dion.
    You know it’s bad when . . .

  7. Yes, Jim Travers is a blatant Liberal. The Liberal pundits are all against Dion because he’s harming their Party. So, all they talk about, endlessly, is Dion. And..an election..to return the Liberals to Power as the Natural Governing Party.
The MSM never talks about Harper or the Conservative govt and its achievements. Its focus is only on trying to come up with an election date, and trying to find/create smear campaigns. Gets rather tiresome.
Apparently, with regard to the Liberal List of Lucky Lemmings in Quebec – the latest word (from whom???) is that it’s not an official list; just a list of current candidates already known, made up by the news reporter. Nothing to do with the Liberal Party.
This new statement might be true. Or untrue. It might indeed be the official list, and might indeed only list about 30 candidates rather than 52. It might indeed show that the Liberals/Dion don’t have a full slate of Quebec candidates despite Dion’s assertion that they do.
Or, it might just be an offhand list on someone’s paper napkin, of the already-publicly known candidates.
    Or..it might not…

  8. Wanna bet Harper and his inner circle aren’t contemplating calling a snap election right now? With the turmoil in the Quebec Lieberal ranks and Harper saying that, should he form a majority government, he would look favorably upon opening constitutional talks to put more substance to Quebec’s nation status and a recent poll showing the Cons with a 10 point lead, we just might see it happen. I think it would be a great time to go to the polls. I don’t see much downside risk for Harper. I seriously doubt that he wouldn’t form at least another minority government. Dion has an 11% approval rating. Its time to go for it!

  9. Isn’t a “star Liberal candidate” oxymoronic?
Maybe some of these “stars” told Dion they’d run just to get rid of him. Or possibly they think that Harper might punch out a nun and the political deck chairs will suddenly change. Then they’d consider the personal financial risk of running up debt to get Kyoto through by 2012 and bankrupt the country. But then they’d still be worse off. So why would anyone run for the Liberals? That’s it … the list is blank, so Dion doesn’t want it published.

  10. Gee and just think, at one time you couldn’t fart in Quebec without getting Liberal party permission, or them knowing about.
My goodness, how the mighty have fallen!

  11. Candidates have to register with Elections Canada which then becomes public information.
Are the Libs illegally not registering their candidates in order to keep their identities secret?

  12. I understand one of the candidates is 6ft 3 & half is white and is of the invisible rabbit type.
Only Steffi can see him and he answers to the name of “Harvey”

  13. Harper can’t call a snap election, there’s an election date Bob. It would be a wonderful thing if he could though if only to watch the librano$ go down hard. In the meanwhile just grab the beer and popcorn and watch the libs sink themselves.

  14. Maybe that list is written in invisible ink, and according to CSI last night, grape juice and baking soda will bring it out.
Even with a set election date, PMSH could go to the GG and say, with the liberals refusing to act like an honorable opposition, sitting on their hands or walking out, asking questions re happenings of 20 years ago, we find it impossible to govern and therefore wish to dissolve parliament.
No one but liberals would cry re a broken promise. If it wasn’t for that set date do you really think the liberals would be acting like the clowns they are.

  15. First time in 30 years that Canada is not being run for the benifit of the Demarais and Power Corp and it is driving the elite crazy. As far as the pundits they should be called putzes, listened to that leftard Travers one to many times on the Diddler on line show along with his friend Kinkysella. Shut that show off monthes ago but dose not surprize me he showcases liberals still, he puts a wet finger in the air everyday and kisses a liberal ass.

  16. On Duffy, it was stated that the names of the 30 odd candidates was compiled by someone (a reporter?) from newspapers & sources already ‘out-there’ in the public domain. Duffy said it was public knowledge and that is why the court case was dropped.
There were many colourful descriptives for the lib. party, it was genuinely excellent to see.
Many lib. put downs and ‘what a bunch of doorknobs’ headshaking moments. I hope someone captured it.

  17. Found the link to the Duffy comments; it at
    http://www.ctv.ca/canada
click on Mike Duffy Live then click on Twist in the leak of Liberal list.
About 4:45 long, runs at the start.
Best line- ‘bunch of nobodies anyway….heh.

  18. Thanks bluetech.
Good that there are 2 ways. Watched it again….what a hoot! I hope you got a chance to view it too. If so, opinions?

  19. Lib leader choice:
Dion – inept, incompetent, hated in his (and my) home province
Rae – inept, incompetent and has track record to prove it.
Iggy – spent practically his entire life out of the country he proposes to lead.

  20. Ref: ‘Don’t know just how the Libs are going to get around all the legal technicalities to unseat the present LPC leader in order to put Bob Rae on the throne — Dion has about 800,000 dollars in debt – Bob Rae and his buddies will offer to pay it off if Dion resigns — aside from that, since when have the Libs every worried about legal technicalities?

  21. The Libs need Justin as Messiah to save the Liberal party – a Trudeau second coming!

  22. — aside from that, since when have the Libs every worried about legal technicalities?
    BINGO
    give the man a ceegar!!!!

  23. Earth to Kelly – Earth to Kelly. Give your head a shake. We have an election date in Saskatchewan but one can be called federally anytime the PM decides to go to the Gev Gen and ask her to dissolve Parliament. How long have you lived in Canada, boy?? I’m disappointed that the regulars on this blog did not pick up on that.

  24. If I were a Liberal candidate, I’d like to keep my identity secret, too (also).
That way, if elected, it would be easier to abstain on a vote.

  25. Does yoo tink it izzy dou fin candadets to roon fo da liberel porty ov canadia. Evens dey does not knoz dey ares rooning fo uz yeat, it iz as secarat evens dou uz. Bodt wen za tims rioht we willz brung diz guveranmant doon. Dat iz wat Iz tels uz ull in dis coontry ov Canadia. I’mz da ledder und evarboodyz muss lissenz doe mez.
Coundn’t help myself LOL, the dweeb is such an osterich and his minion of clowns are just sizing up his shoes.

  26. “Dion has about 800,000 dollars in debt – Bob Rae and his buddies will offer to pay it off if Dion resigns — aside from that, since when have the Libs ever”
eureka !!! call up the auditor general’s office !!! mr ron just found 800 grand of the adscam money !!!

  27. Actually a different bob I’m not sure that is correct any more. The only way for an election to be called now is as a result of a non-con vote.
here is the wording in the act:
“43. Every House of Commons should continue for four years, from the day of the return of the writs for choosing the House and no longer, provided that, and notwithstanding any Royal Prerogative, the Governor General should have the power to dissolve Parliament during that period:
    (1) when the Government is defeated
    (a) on a motion expressing no confidence in the Government; or
    (b) on a vote on a specific bill or portion of a bill which the Government has previously declared should be construed as a motion of want of confidence; or
(2)when the House of Commons passes a resolution requesting dissolution of Parliament. ”
Doesn’t look like the PM can call an election at his or her discretion.

  28. This fixed election crap in our parliamentary system is the dumbest thing the Cons have done. Bet they’ve been kicking themselves ever since.

  29. Maybe Stéphane Dion is afraid that if the newspapers publish the Quebec federal Liberal candidate list, he won’t be on it.

  30. This might be a brilliant strategy on the part of Hervieux-Payette. She could put all kinds of “star” candidates on the list (Celine Dion, Matts Sundine, GOD, the Mormon Tabernacle Quoir…)and then when the list is published she can claim that yes, they were supporters and “really” wanted to run for the lieberals, but now that the evil press has published their names they won’t run.

  31. Fixed elections are a godsend.
The most recent AB election is a textbook example of why they are necessary. And any of the elections called by Jean Chretien would serve the purpose, too.
It’s about fairness – allowing your opponent time to organize, raise funding and get their message out. and preventing the ruling party from timing the election so as to avoid bad news – see PET and wage and price controls.

Lets say that your right , for arguments sake.
It may not be good for the political party that most of us support, randall, but it is better for Canada, and this is more important to conservatives than politics is to liberals.
    You willfully blind stupid traitor.

  33. Lol. Just how bad does your candidate list have to be before you go to court to try to hide them like your loser cousin you don’t want your friends to find out about?

  34. The PM cannot call a election at a whim anymore that’s true BUT if the opposition idiots (Specifically Lieberals) stall the government enough and Harper feels nothing is moving anymore he has the recourse of going to our separatist/Leftard GG and ask for a desolve…Now with Liberals tanking and with more and more Canucks from all sides of the political spectrum saying it is now time for an election to either win a majority for us or remove Dion/rebuild the Lib party for the other gang, Ms. Jean would be ill advised to refuse Harper just to extend the life of Dijon and co. who his curently hoping his fortunes might eventually change.
We will either have an election soon or continue a minority Conservative Gov with majority powers by default until Sept 2009…Just hope the economy does sour too much until then…Although polls say most Canucks would trust Harper the economist to manage during a recession.
    Don’t worry, be happy!

  35. If Harper feels nothing is moving along?
Sounds like a plan to me.
The less government moves along, the less it can come up with goofy ideas on how to spend your money.
By Oct, 2009, the opposition and the MSM should be completely frustrated and their only strategy is to pretend they care by spending an even higher amount of your money.
Just rag the puck for anothe 18 months and trim a program here and there …

  36. The Gov Gen has the right to disolve parliament. Pure and simple. If the PM requests it she and it is not due to a confidence issue she has the perogative to grant or not grant disolution. When you have laws that have words in it like “should” instead of “shall” the cracks are plenty big enough to jump into.
