Best Canadian Blog
2004 - 2007
Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Ironic indeed.
I can’t be bothered to go on that site to read the whinings of a group dominated by decadent leftists who despise much of what I think is good and important in the world, but I’d be curious if any of the whining journalists have identified the fact that they have lost credibility with the public as part of the problem with their profession.
What’s their problem? All they do is provide filler for the space between the advertisements for junk food, pop culture crap, cars, etc.
“I’m angry because my company, just like the rest of the industry, wants me to do more with less.
Uh, it’s quite common for companies to want their employees to do more with less. It’s known as productivity improvement. Companies that don’t, over time, do more with less, go out of business. Ask anybody who used to work in the American steel industry.
delicious!
Imagine a group of old-school j-rags whining on the internet about the changes that came as a result of the internet.
Imagine saying stuff on a blog stuff that can’t be said in a newspaper! Then crabbing about “new media”!!!
I love it. Even the MSM leftards have lost faith in their medium.
Poor babies!
They should try house painting. That’ll make a man out of you, even if you’re a woman. Or even if you’re a man who looks like a woman.
Like BigCityLib. Bwahahahaaaa!!!!!
Your comments on the Station 20 West Project remind me of that tall skinny blond American chick with a similar view on life. The only difference I can detect is that she is just
a bit more attractive, overall.

Good grief, an industry subjected for the first time in its existence to true quality control and it can’t handle it! Are we surprised? What, after all, are the qualifications required of a journalist? Any background education in their chosen (or assigned) beat? Any knowledge of valid scientific methodology? Any knowledge of valid investigative techniques? Any sense of integrity for dispassionate fact checking? If, as a quack physician, I were trying to convince all my patients that they suffered from gallstones based on the knowledge gleaned from my B.A. studies, and were being called to account by truly qualified diagnosticians, I too would be an angry, frustrated practitioner.
Mo,
Wrong thread. You must be a leftard.
And a comparason between Ann and Kate makes them both look good by the standards of your average dipper or liberal.
Mo, your ad hominem failed to include the requisite sexually-oriented sputtering profanity considered de riguer at all good lefty blogs. Report to your commisar for a re-education session and we’ll see you in twenty five years. Oh, and dress warmly.
Journalists like the scientific communitie have lost all my respect and creditability. They have succumbed to political leanings instead of presenting the facts and letting the public decide. When I read something in the paper these days I take for granted that the facts will be incorrectly presented and if the story interests me I look on the net. They have marginalized them selves by being inaccurate and misleading in their reporting. Even more so they have become master cheats of the truth by the omission of facts that do not suit their political leanings.
It’s far less stressful just to tell the truth than to engage in the elaborate fictional discourses which constitue “journalism” for the major dailies.
I have just returned to Blubb and Wail land from central Pennsylvania, where the print news comes from the “Centre [sic] Daily Times” and only a few demented academics read the NYTimes or the WaPo. The shock is considerable. The Blubb lives in its own little world, where the “Cadmon affair” is front page news, along with Dion’s latest pronouncement and Layton’s latest bill. The Centre Daily Times on the other hand, though not considered a good newspaper by locals, does provide local, US, and world news, “news” which actually is mildly interesting and perhaps even important. The CDT reminds me of the Barrie Examiner, which I considered the best paper in Canada when I followed it regularly.
Self documenting business suicide . . . . wonderful to read
Irony is a a delicious dish to start the day with.
I like mine with cheerios and coffee!
Wonderful ……… 😉
Poor babies have an unpleasant working enviwonment? Boo hoo!
They should try house painting. That’ll make a man out of you even if you’re a woman.
Phantom, like the men on the hone decorating shows?
The real action at that site is in the comments. There are few sympathetic posts, even from amongst those who are apparently journalists. Particularly revealing are those posts from journalists and ex-journalists showing how patently agenda-driven and biased the MSM really is.
You said it DrD! I loved this one:
“A motorcycle rider was walking through the Bronx Zoo when he saw a lion grab a kid and pull her up to the bars. The biker ran over, poked his fingers in the lion’s eyes and saved the little girl. The next day the headline in The New York Times read: “White Gangster Blinds African Immigrant and Steals His Lunch.”
This is funny because it’s the truth. This is how the NYT sees the world.”
The problem for most news reporting is that it is seen, by the companies as a part of the entertainment department.
The idea of a journalist going out to actually research stories is seen usually, as too expensive.
Check out the average newsroom, the reporter is busy with Google.
No wonder then, a blogger with time and talent can put together a report with more depth and facts than a reporter. They don’t consider the time or space restraints.
The average reporter is little more than a sound-bite recorder, so it is little wonder the Internet and the real world are overcatching them.
Adam
I’m not sure what left or right has to do with journalism in any case. All writers have a bias and so do their editors but when push comes to shove they work for companies that are trying to maximize profits. The “news” is secondary to the real motivation of the media which is making profit. Which is why left and right political media is so small. Pandering to a political agenda has a short shelf life unless its widely held. It’s got to sell tampons or beer or whatever and that’s tough to do when you’re very narrow in your focus.
No Puddin’& Pie, they are “designers”. They hire painters. Being a designer will make a girl out of anybody, even if you’re a man. Something to do with matching the throw pillows to the drapes, acts like a testosterone antimatter.
Can you see those guys removing a bee’s nest from the end of a 30 ft ladder? Cutting in the top of the stairwell?
Me neither.
See journalists? It could be worse. You could be painting the newsroom, doing actual work. Not just sitting there typing in it.
Phantom said : “Not just sitting there typing in it.” …!
Hoho … that ‘depends’ on what ‘IT’ is…. 😉
But seriously …. the news gathering organizations have hundreds of agents out gathering news and full time staff to perform editorial work.
Take a look at what Reuters, AP and CP produce….
The journalism field is going the same way as the travel agency business did when the internet first got into that business. for simple transactions like booking a flight to TO from Calgary consumers flocked to the weba dn in a very short period of time 60% of the travel agents were out of business.
Now people looking for their news are getting it from ‘free’ weblogs and via on-line newswires. 60% of the ‘journalists’ today will be out of work soon. Those that will remain will be like those travel agents that remain – focussed on the more complex part of the business. for travel agents that meant things like long tours, group tours, and conventions. For the journos it will mean much deeper stories requiring lots of investigation and a very high knowledge of the topic. Michael Yon seems to me to be one of the prototypes.
The bitching and moaning of those on angryjournalist.com is the death rattle of those 60% whose careers are soon to end.
angry jounalist #?
“Most journalists and editors are left leaning because only leftist ideologues could put up with the horse manure that passes as a “humanities” education these days. (Hint: conservatives are driven out, denied scholarships, made to feel unwelcome in humanities departments – leaving almost only liberals in the journalism and teaching professions).
Why? Because 60’s generation leftists monopolize 99% of the humanities departments, teachers schools and journalism schools across the nation.
Cultural relativism, race and ethnic identity obsession, anti-Americanism, fascist feminism, pro-terrorist Middle East studies – a regular circus of PC, cult of victimization nitwits.”
There’s only two reasons to buy newspapers today … sports and the comics.
it’s the leftard secular progressive crowd who destroyed the MSM – they only have themselves to blame – poetic nemesis at its finest
Will their resumes suck more than their news reporting?
I saw a very surprising report on CNBC this morning. While they acknowledged that total readership was in decline, they posted a graph that showed that Mon-Fri newspaper readership has been remarkably stable over the last 15 years – +/-1% around 50 million papers per day. It’s the big, fat Sunday editions that have plummeted, losing more than 25% of their total circulation over the period.
For those who have never seen a traditional Sunday paper, it’s about 3 inches thick, weighs about 5 lbs and could conceivably be used as a murder weapon. Most of that weight is ads – grocery store inserts, Sears/WalMart/Target inserts, local mall inserts, etc., etc., ad nauseum. Naturally, these ads represent a huge source of revenue, and it’s falling off as rapidly as Sunday circulation.
This suggests to me that, just as I do, many people use print to supplement other sources of news, such as TV, radio, and the Internet. However, with the possible exception of NY Times Sunday readers, most people apparently don’t feel like wading through a forest of ads to get the little content most Sunday editions include.
I’d have to say reports of the daily newspaper’s death are exaggerated.
KevinB:
If sales are flat for fifty yrs and the pop’n is growing at say, 2%/yr, then their market penetration has fallen 25 to 30%.
Ad revenues – the real barometer of their relevancy have fallen and fallen drastically.
set you free: Newspapers are also good if you have puppies, need to wrap fish, or have a birdcage.
If you’re looking for sports, there are a zillion sports websites out there (kudos to the NHL for posting game highlights on YouTube); a newspaper sports section is really only good for the local highschool teams.
