What Are The Odds?

This sounds less like a security breach than it does a case for the “smell test”

Plans showing the layout of a new building for a Canadian Forces counter-terrorism unit based in Trenton, Ont., have been found in a pile of garbage on Bank Street.
The 26 blueprints, stamped with Department of National Defence markings, show everything from the location of the security fence to the floor plan of the new home of the Canadian Joint Incident Response Unit at CFB Trenton.
The unit is the military’s main responder to a terrorist attack using a weapon of mass destruction.
[…]
The blueprints were found March 13 by the spouse of Anthony Salloum, an analyst with the Rideau Institute, the left-leaning Ottawa think-tank. As the couple were on their way to dinner, Mr. Salloum’s spouse noticed a large pile of garbage bags on the sidewalk, on top of which sat seven large rolled tubes of paper stamped with Defence Department markings.
“I thought they looked interesting, but we were headed to dinner, so I figured I’d pick one up on the way back if they were still there,” said Mr. Salloum.

Reader Bob McLeod echoes the suspicions of a number of commentors;

This is just too coincidental to even sound legitimate.

  • Salloum just happens to work for a left leaning think tank opposed to the military.
  • He and his companion check garbage along their route to dinner.Doesn’t everyone?
  • There are seven(they counted, right?) rolls of documents on the bagged garbage.
  • The documents just happen to appear along his route to dinner.
  • He happens to a have a “partner” with him who can corroborate the find.
  • He doesn’t go back for the other rolls of documents, even after seeing DND markings and “briefly” examining the documents.
  • Neither he, nor the others in the “think tank” knew what they had…..kinda a dumb bunch of deep thinkers.
  • On suddenly realizing what they had, instead of calling the authorities, they call the media. Good citizens, not!
  • Having a very cynical mind, I suspect that the documents were obtained through less than legitimate means, and this is the chosen method of revealing them to the public. Want to bet that this “scandal” surfaces in the next question period? Makes you wonder who has orchestrated the whole thing.

    Darcey considers his own pile of trash bound blueprints;

In my garage I have a number of rolls that are heading out to the garbage and I couldn’t imagine anyone rooting through them other then maybe some curious kids.
My gut feeling is that the story by the program director of the Rideau Institute stinks. Do Anthony Salloum and his wife routinely look thru garbage they find on the street and pick it up?

    More on what appears to be a non-story. Neither the blueprints nor the construction site were considered sensitive;

But he downplayed the significance of the what the abandoned blueprints reveal and noted that anyone is free to enter the base and many areas are unrestricted.
“There’s nothing in the building that I know of that is security-related. It’s a steel building, its got concrete floors and some cooling and heating system and some electrical system. There’s nothing (else) in there. Now, what fit-up the army may do with it, well that’s a different story.”

    1. I wonder if the good Dr and his Mrs would consent to a polygraph? I think not.

    2. I heard this story in the US.
My first reaction was “Lieberal bureaucrat subverting the government”.
I hope Tony washed his hands before dinner. Being a garbage picker and lefty, I sure wouldn’t shake hands without a hand sanitzer.

    3. Everything about this setup stinks.
‘Far too many “coincidences” for randomly “finding” these blueprints in the garbage on a public street for this story to be credible.
You wonder who’s thinking up these scenarios? And what’s going to be next?
The Librano/MSM collaborators are bombarding the Canadian public with so-called CPC “scandals,” hoping that enough of them will stick that come the election, whenever it is, we’ll have grave doubts about the honesty of the CPC and PM Stephen Harper.
I give PMSH credit–and his Party members. They’re keeping their powder dry and refusing to rise to the bait. ‘Takes a lot of discipline to not lash out in sheer frustration.
I think what it says about the CPC is that they have far more trust in Canadians’ intelligence than does the LPoC. In fact, more than anything, that’s what really cheeses me off: The Librano$’ taking us all for a bunch of idiots.

So true. Same goes for LPC ads:
      – “Soldiers on our streets”
      – Ads depicting aircraft carriers, handguns (not covered by the firearms Registry), young teenage girl, sitting on a floor against a wall, having a nervous breakdown (presumably because she couldn’t get an abortion)
      – “A Harper victory will put a smile on George Bush’s face. At least someone will be smiling, eh?” (This from a party that now claims its worried that damage will result to U.S.-Canada relations over the so-called NAFTAgate issue if a certain candidate becomes president, not actually offending a sitting one apparently)
It’s not the ads per se that is offensive. It’s the mindset that goes into not only conceiving them but that thinks the public will buy into them. It illustrates how the LPC view the voting public – as morons. The LPC feel these type of ads are worth the gamble though because smart, well-informed Canadians don’t vote for the LPC any way.

    5. Remember,
Most of the people who take political scandals in the newspaper at face value without looking to find out more are idiots. The same sort of idiots who don’t remember to vote.

    6. Being a dual citizen of Canada and the USA, I have to admit that I am surprised Alberta hasn’t became another American state.
Rather than fighting the Liberals and the media ,which is obviously left wing, Alberta should take their oil and run to America.
Albertans share more in common with the USA that it does the rest of Canada.
I hope it happens one day.
All of Alberta would be Conservative or Republican and well off, while the rest of Canada would be liberal and broke.
What would Canada look like without Alberta, you might ask!
Most likely Pakistan with a mix of France.

    7. Won’t happen, Tom. Albertans proved they are just as apathetic as the ROC when it comes to voting, only 41% bothered to vote in the last provincial election. Even when their own so-called Conservative government slaps higher royaty taxes that essentially out-sourced their jobs to Saskatchewan and BC and frankly to the world, they didn’t get off their duffs to voice their displeasure. Ontario worries that our “over heated” economy is driving them outta business. All I say is don’t worry, Eddy took care of that problem for ya, go back to sleep. How do I know? My corporation has taken a 45% cut in earnings since last October 2007. That’s 45% less in GST, corporate and personal taxes paid into equalization. In some ways that makes me smile.

    8. I live in Alberta. If the Liberals had formed the federal government under Martin in 2006 the Alberta separation movement would have been almost unstoppable. Actually, it was ore a Western Canada concept – BC and Alberta; NDP Sask at that time was considered a liability but now that there is a free enterprise government they would be part of it.
Manitoba has way too much social welfare to have not been a drain on the new western Canada but without the west’s money Ottawa would not have been able to sustain it.
If the Liberals do regain the leadership of this country, especially under someone as despised for his policies and his affiliations with the corrupt backroom elites of this country I can assure you – the movement to get a Liberal Ottawa totally out of our face will become an avalanch.
Stephen Harper’s election as PM did not only put ther brakes on Quebec separation but the entire west of this country as well.
History will show how close we were to breaking up this country because of the Liberals and the quasis Liberals (Progressive Conservatives).

    9. WESTERN CANADA SEPARATION MOVEMENT-BRING ON!!!
STEPHEN HARPER WILL NOT STOP IT!!HE SOLD US TO THE BITCH.

    10. I think Ann has it right, the west needs out of Canada before we are dragged down to thier level, and believe me it is close with the NDP in Sask.

    11. The NDP are no longer in Saskatchewan, sysk. They just had an election and the Saskatchewan Party won – they are more like Conservatives.
It is Manitoba which is still NDP and the BC Liberals are more like Conservatives. So, the entire west except Manitoba now have conservative minded governments which are the only kind that stimulate the economy, create jobs, and a responsible managers who believe in a hand up and not a hand out.
Socialism (communism by any other name)with a few elites who rape the rest of us in their quest for control, power and welath resides in the NDP and the Bob Rae/Dion Liberals and we will fight to keep them out or our lives and our children’s lives. Period.

    12. Imf. . . Well said, and ..
We can not say it often enough for Eastern Canada.
British Columbia: Gordon Campbell*s *liberal* party is really a CONSERVATIVE party.
      Alberta: Clearly Conservative
      Saskatchewan: Now… Conservative
      Manitoba Liberal, but trending Conservative.
Hello **Toronto… Vote for a better job climate.. vote Conservative. = TG

    13. All these so-called conservative governments, except Sask. for now, have green plan/carbon tax schemes of one form or another. They have bought into the falsehood that taxing or controlling industry and individuals will actually “control” our climate. BUNK! They are no more “conservative” than the Libs, Greens, BLOC or Dips.

    14. JT,
Caution; any government, regardless of stripe, will collect a *harmless* current fad tax.
It*s like you are suggesting Conservatives refuse to collect gasoline taxes.
Nothing to do with left or right leanings. = TG
