This seems to me to be related to the previous item, though for the life of me, I can’t say how.

Oh, what the hell, let’s give ’em this too:
“Muslims want unis to fit prayer time”
MUSLIM university students want lectures to be rescheduled to fit in with prayer timetables and separate male and female eating and recreational areas established on Australian campuses.
International Muslim students, predominantly from Saudi Arabia, have asked universities in Melbourne to change class times so they can attend congregational prayers. They also want a female-only area for Muslim students to eat and relax.

“Islamist Recommendations or Mandates?”
R. John Matthies
Not long ago a list of “unique issues affecting Muslim Americans” was posted at the Muslim Americans for Obama ’08 website. This describes a number of “recommendations” drafted to advance the discussion of lawful Islamism and exceptional accommodation in the United States. These suggest both that “Islamic” comportment is beyond reproach, and that one is always correct to press the case for inviolable “Muslim” space.
The “recommendations” described are neither fantastical nor improbable. In fact, if the United States has by this time failed to enact the variety of accommodations embraced by our Western allies, it is clear that, on the ground and across the United States, private institutions and local governing bodies have taken the lead in obliging Islamist groups. This is simply to say that the present list of wishes (untouched for spelling and grammar) has become very real for many.
QUESTION: What are issues and recommendations for solutions that are unique to Muslim Americans?
1. A Law against harrassment of Muslim women wearing Hijab at the Airport, DMV and other public arenas.
2. Institute a Law to allow Muslim Employees to take a hours off from work for Friday Jummah [congregational] Prayer.
3. Make the 2 Eid’s [holidays to mark the end of Ramadan and the Festival of Sacrifice], recognized National Holidays on Calendars with days off from work.
4. Optional Halal meals in federal buildiings, public schools and colleges.
5. Provide prayer areas suitable for Salah [ritual prayer] and Jummah, in public and private facilities. (i.e. Malls, Airports, Universities and government buildings.)
6. Organize a Muslim American group to assist in recommendations for US foreign policy affecting majority Muslim countries.
“unreconstructed paleo-lefties*” reach/voyage to the island of Erewhon, aka socialist Cuba.
The end result of socialism: “an island fortress of poverty, corruption and currency apartheid”.

Castro’s Cuba was no place for a socialist like me
Neil Clark says that he went to Havana in search of a left-wing Utopia and discovered instead an island fortress of poverty, corruption and currency apartheid
It’s a country where the vast majority live in poverty, while a tiny, corrupt elite live in luxury. It’s a place where, 14 years after South Africa abolished apartheid, a form of it still operates. And it’s a country where you can be threatened with prison not just for criticising the country’s leadership, but also for querying a medical bill.
Welcome to Cuba, the ‘socialist’ paradise built by that great egalitarian Fidel Castro, who after 49 years at the helm has finally decided to hand over power — in the manner of a true democrat — to his brother Raúl.
My wife and I, as unreconstructed paleo-lefties who support Clause Four**, free school meals and NHS dental provision, had long wanted to visit Castro’s Cuba. …-

Nicola Timmerman wrote, “Did anyone see the British film Amazing Grace about William Wilberforce and his long struggle to abolish slavery in England? I was wondering why it was not nominated for at least best foreign film.”
I’m a committed Christian and very seldom agree with the Academy on anything. (I haven’t bothered to watch the Oscars for many years now.)
However, I’d imagine one of the reasons “Amazing Grace” (I LOVE that hymn!) wasn’t nominated is because–certainly in my opinion–it wasn’t a very good movie: weak characters (as acted: I find Ioan Gruffudd typically tepid and formulaic) and not much plot or drama.
‘Too bad, because this is a noble story and, IMO, could have made a really great movie: think the sleeper, “Chariots of Fire”. Now THAT was some movie, with orthodox Christians as good guys–fantastic music too!
IMHO, the most stirring and dramatic part of “Amazing Grace” was the surprise “ending”!
JJM: “And Marion Cotillard won an Oscar! Wow! There is hope for Hollywood after all.”
Not really. The other actresses nominated for Best Actress weren’t all that great, IMO.
Cotillard WAS fantastic. It was amazing to see this absolutely beautiful young actress emerge at the Oscars from under the makeup and behind the physical gestures with which Cotillard crafted her uncanny depiction of the passionate, drug-addled diva.
Did she do her own singing? Whether she did or not, her performance was a tour de force. Good thing Hollywood gave her the Oscar or they’d have had egg all over their faces.

Spengler on Obama
Spengler at the Asia Times is uncharacteristically vituperative about Barack Obama. And we get a clue to the mysterious Spengler’s real identity. He writes under an alias for the Asia Times.
Spengler drops a hint about where he’s been, who he knew.
The senior Obama died in a 1982 car crash. Kenyan government officials in those days normally spent their nights drinking themselves stupid at the Pan-Afrique Hotel. Two or three of them would be found with their Mercedes wrapped around a palm tree every morning. During the 1970s I came to know a number of them, mostly British-educated hollow men dying inside of their own hypocrisy and corruption.
I’ll guess that Spengler once …

Archibald paper supports Dalton Minimum Returns
Russ Steele
The Heartland Institute, is sponsoring 2008 International Conference on Climate Change, March 2 – March 4, 2008 in New York City.
The 2008 International Conference on Climate Change is the first major international conference to focus on issues and questions not answered by advocates of the theory of man-made global warming.
David Archibald will present a paper at this conference: Solar Cycle 24: Implications for the United States
Do we live in a special time in which the laws of physics and nature are suspended? No, we do not. Can we expect relationships between the Sun’s activity and climate, that we can see in data going back several hundred years, to continue for at least another 20 years? With absolute certainty.
In this presentation, I will demonstrate that the Sun drives climate, and use that demonstrated relationship to predict the Earth’s climate to 2030. It is a prediction that differs from most in the public domain. It is a prediction of imminent cooling.
You can download Archibald’s paper here: Solar_Arch_NY_Mar2_08.pdf I will be highlighting sections of this paper where it supports the Dalton Minimum Returns. It could be even worse, a return to a Maunder Minimum. I am hoping for a Dalton Return.
H/T to Anthony Watts for sending me this paper.

Glenn Beck had a piece on the New York conference tonight. He interviewed a fellow from the Heartland Institute who mentioned that they had invited Al Gore to speak , however Al took a pass. As the Heartland guy said, “Al Gore doesn’t debate.” I guess they should have offered him 100K.
