  1. I don think anybody accused them of serving beer to minors. But if booze is being served at youth functions, where minors are present, and there are no staff who are provincially certified(in Ontario, it is called Smart Serve), who knows what abuse could take place. If it is happening, it is totally irresponsible. Young children see, young children want to do.

  2. “So what is the age limit for the youth wings of other political parties?”
When I was in high school in 1992, esteemed Indian claims lawyer Tony Merchant was running for the Liberal nomination against Ralph Goodale. Merchant had organized a youth party in which high school kids and university students would go to a membership drive party in which beer and pizza were alleged to be had in abundance. Ours being a private school in a tiny village outside of Regina, one of our teachers set a policy in which students could join up with the Liberal party but couldn’t attend the Merchant event, for obvious reasons.
Needless to say, the Merchant machine lost its momentum on our campus.
In any case, the minimum age for the Liberal party membership at that time was 16.

  3. This might be totally unrelated,or not,but convicted jewel thief ,svend, put forth a private members bill to lower the age of consent to 12. Yup,have a brewski, little man,and later I will show you what goes on behind closed doors in the people’s party.

  4. I just posted this in another thread but it fits here too.
Why hasn’t Bill Graham denied having relations with Lawrence Metherel?
Lawrence Metherel did an interview in a Canadian gay magazine a while back about having relations with Bill Graham while receiving support payments from him. That story has been circulating for several years now. The media is afraid to tell the general public about it, fearing legal action for talking about something so outrageous without any “evidence”. At the same time, strangely, Bill Graham, to my knowledge, has yet to deny having sex with a 15-year old boy. How bizarre is that?
Check out this conversation on the not-so-conservative “Vive le Canada” site. Here’s an attempt to defend Graham:

MAGAZINES SAY CANADA’S FOREIGN MINISTER HAD SEXUAL AFFAIR WITH 15-YEAR-OLD MALE PROSTITUTE
Claim Canada’s Foreign Minister Is An Admitted Bisexual
OTTAWA, February 19, 2002 (LSN.ca) – Canada’s newly appointed Foreign Affairs Minister, Bill Graham, is a darling of the homosexual activist community having constantly supported pro-homosexuality initiatives including homosexual marriage. However, last year a Toronto-based homosexual magazine called Fab published an interview with Lawrence Metherel, a former male prostitute, who claimed to have had a sexual relationship with the Graham, dating back to 1980 when Metherel was 15.
The story has gone unchallenged by Graham’s constituency office, which admitted to LifeSite that it had heard of the story. As a result the issue has become a major embarrassment for Canada as it was picked up in the US publication Front Page Magazine, which repeated the allegations Feb 14 in a story entitled “Bill Graham: Canada’s Latest Shame.”
The mainstream press in Canada has touched on the issue in a secondhand fashion as the TorStar corporation’s Eye weekly Toronto paper has come out in defense of Graham. Eye columnist Sky Gilbert wrote on Feb 14 that “the first thing you need to know is that Bill Graham is gay,” and goes on to say that any interest in Graham’s controversial past is evidence of homophobia.
While his bio on the website of the Department of Foreign Affairs says: “He and his wife Catherine have two children: Katherine Helen and Patrick William,” Eye says, “Almost everyone in the gay community knows that Graham is gay.” Moreover, Eye calls Metherel “an ex-boyfriend of Graham’s” and Graham’s “spurned lover.”
Canadian delegations to the United Nations, under previous foreign affairs Ministers, have been one of the world leaders in pushing a mandated radical sexual agenda on the rest of the world, with total disregard for national cultural and religious traditions. Mr. Graham’s appointment begs the question of just how much further the Liberal government is determined to advance this agenda.
Calls to the Press Secretary of Minister Graham were not returned by press tim

  5. wally
svend the homosexual, and jewel thief MP, was successful in having the age lowered to 14 from 16. The conservatives are trying to raise it back to 16, but I think it is stalled in senate.

  6. Hans said: “I highly recommend beer brewed according to the Bavarian Purity Law.”
I believe this to be a platform error. Although this will capture the real lager vote it ignores the Real ale (CAMRA) vote and the vote of Hefeweiss and Belgian lambic, saison and trappist drinker votes.
As a political platform this ignores that there is more than barley, hops and water to good beer….ot was a maistake 1589 in Bavaria and is still a mistake in rum soaked Dipper Sask in 2007.

  7. From the Sask Party constitution:
An associate member may not hold office, except in the case of
young people between the ages of 14 and 18 holding office in
    Saskatchewan Party Youth organizations.
I agree with what someone said earlier;this sounds like a staff writer trying to add a line while sounding “cool to the kids” and it comes across as sophmoric and stupid. Youth groups in all organizations are a key way to find tomorrows volunteers and leadership and all political parties and volunteer organizations must find them or wither.

  8. just have the NDP call themselves the “Beer Party” and get it over with. with a name like that even Gordon Campbell the premier of BC would join.

  9. “children are not considered responsible for their actions when they commit crimes”
Exactly. The Dippers are bleating for Harper to bring the ‘young Kahdr’ home as he was a mere ‘child’ when he threw a grenade that killed a US medic. But he’d likely have been welcomed to join the NDP, even two years prior to his ‘child-like’ act of murderous jihad.

  10. Believe it or not, I worked as a volunteer for a PC candidate in the 1977 Ontario provincial election. He didn’t win, but we had a great defeat party on election night. I was with a group of about a half dozen kids who ranged in age from 13 to 15, and the beer was flowing.
Conservative just aren’t as much fun these days…

  11. serving booze to young kids would probably got my interest enough to get me to attend when I was a kid. in fact a friend who was president of a political youth organization bribed a group of friends with beer back in high school. didn’t give a shit about politics but sure did like free beer. come to think of it we never did bother to vote for our friend cause we were too loaded…aah, good times!
and I didn’t give a shit about politics until I was close to 30, but then I grew up in the defeatist socialist climate of PEI- playing rugby, hockey, going to the beach and doing fun stuff while ignoring politics.

  12. your right lberia
    believe it or not —not.
you sound like a left over from the 60s and a likely candidate for the birkenstock sect or the “squirrels live happily in my beard” group
as Bill Shakespear might say now.
“get thee to a subsidized housing unit.”
    what would Jack Layton say.

  13. The Saskatchewan Democratic Action Party would like to encourage anyone who has information relating to the NDP, Lorne Calvert and other NDP Leaders serving alcohol to 13 year old children, to report the NDP to Child Protective Services.
As it appears that the NDP public information indicates that they are serving alcohol to minors, it is important until this matter is clarified that the NDP not be permitted to have unsupervised visits with children.
We are considering filing a report with Saskatchewan Child Protective Services asking that they monitor all NDP events in the future where children may be present and take appropriate action to end the behavior – upto and including requesting that Child Protective Services initiate legal action to dissolve the NDP if they refuse to obey the law on serving alcohol to minors.

  14. As an added thankyou, everyone who reads blogs such as Small Dead Animals should thank dedicated and conscientious people like Kate McMillan for bringing to light issues such as the NDP abuse of persons with disabilities in the recent stutter-gate debacle and this clear violation of Saskatchewan Law relating to serving alcohol to minors.

  15. I’m considering requesting that Child Protective Services initiate legal action to dissolve the Saskatchewan Democratic Action Party in the event that they refuse to obey the law as it applies to the age of consent.

  16. To answer a few questions on here:
most if not all political parties have their memberships start at either 13 or 14.
The truth is that with any youth wing among any party there is really two different groups of youth involved. There is the high school students , who are made up of some very bright, ambitious, eager young individuals and children of party members and there is the 19 and over group which is primarily university students and others who are 19 to 25 or in some provinces 18 to 25.
This statement has nothing to do with promoting drinking it is a reality of the group. It is not purely a group where we do nothing but talk about policy and debate policy, etc., etc. It is largely a group made up of younger members/supporters of the NDP in Saskatchewan and a lot of what we do is hang out and have some fun. Sometimes that fun is talking about policy, sometimes that fun is having a rock show, sometimes its sitting having a few beer and talking politics in a bar.
The point is not to encourage drunkenness, it is really who we are. We are purely young people who truly believe in the NDP and we are people who have fun together, whether it is volunteering somewhere, standing up for a cause, knocking on doors, listening to music, talking about what we think or even god for bid, for those of us 19 and over “drinking a beer.”
So if people like yourselves have nothing to do but try and make villains out of the members of the young NDP, feel free. Maybe it will make you feel superior, I know you all very much enjoy feeling superior over others.
Anyway, the truth is shouldn’t young people be able to be young people, say what they want to say , do things they maybe can’t do once they get older providing they aren’t hurting anyone, basically expected and allowed to have some fun. I think so. (And for those of you truly ready to respond, I assure you the “scary socialists” are not feeding or attempting to feed any 13 year olds alcohol or anything else they shouldn’t have)
P.S. – Every political party’s youth wing has people who drink alcohol. (What a travesty, those immoral bastards)

  17. SDAP: “Why so crabby?”
I’m reacting to what I would call sensationalistic and malicious speculation with respect to this NDP group. Lots and lots of establishments (not to mention households) serve alcoholic drinks in the presence of children. I think that in the absence of a single report of alcohol being served to minors (much less 13 year-olds), it is as ridiculous to throw around all of this innuendo as it is for me to have cautioned the SDAP as I did. Also my steak was just slightly overcooked at dinner last night.

  18. So when do the facts concerning the Terry Bekolay case become unsealed/public?
IIRC, one of his buddies/fellow lawyers, Michael Bomek, was convicted of providing underage native boys with substances, to wit: marihuana and alcohol, in exchange for homosexual sex.
