Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Griff tells me it’s great, I haven’t seen it yet though.
yes yes, it was a very good movie.
The buddy I went with referred to him as the token democrat, but Nancy works just fine.
Visually stunning and a whole lot of fun.
It is definitely a landmark film. Highly recommended. There are some key words to focus on in the film as well, along with some stunning and obvious visual cues.
What was one of those first words again? Oh yeah, “SUBMISSION”
There are many, many more. It’s a treasure chest full of material and inspiration.
A good movie no doubt. Visually stunning and the very fact that these 300 Spartans inspired the entire Grecian army to mobilize to stop this advance of death and slavery, is historical.
We in fact, owe those 300 Spartans a great debt.
Neat to see the shield and spear tactics. Very believable.
Quite apropos that Pelosi is making deals with the Syrians behind the Presidents back. Very apt comparison.
Pelosi Is Our Neville Chamberlain
By Ronald Kessler
With her trip to Syria, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi achieved two things: She undercut her own credibility in Washington, and she spotlighted what is wrong with the Democrats’ approach to national security.
The spectacle of Pelosi making nice with Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad in Damascus and accepting at face value his claim that he is ready to *resume the peace process* with Israel had a large portion of official Washington tittering.

Fantastic movie. First, capes make the uniform. Second, this bit at the end stands out:
“This day we rescue a world from mysticism and tyranny and usher in a future brighter than anything we can imagine.”
Amazing, I can imagine Bush and Blair saying that same thing – oh, wait, no, no I can’t – not in 2007. It’s sad to watch 300 and think that there’s no one left to stand up to our modern Xerxes and his barbarian hordes. The only words that can describe our modern ‘leaders’ come from Romeo & Juliet:
“O calm, dishonourable, vile submission!”
Fantastic movie and you are spot on when choosing the Pelosi comparison.
I think it would prove wise to have this movie shown to a large portion of the teen-age male population who have been allowed to be stripped of their manhood by the social engineers.
There will be a point in time soon when this classic battle may be played out again if the Islamic nations have their way.
While the core fact of the movie is correct…the 300 delayed the persian army long enough for the other greeks to gather and organize.
It is based on a story that is an extrapolation of that event.
The Greek navy is the real hammer that smashed Xeres by defeating them soundly. As well, the Persians oddly enough kept delaying….why isnt clear other than the bad leadership of Xeres. Why Xeres wouldnt push his enormous numerical advantage remains one of the biggest mysteries….
None of the above takes anything anyway from the bravery of the Spartans….but also remeber the Spartans werent democrats, they were a militaristic quasi fascistic society that did take children from their families at a young age….and yes the children were sexually abused in those training camps….
BUt yes stunning visual movie and a good thing that the Greek alliance won, because it would have been another setback for the naescent Western civilization and democracies. Who knows how far the Persian empire would have stretched they had got past Greece.
Both sides have been debated….is there a politcal message, is the Persian empire the Iranians in this movie or is the empire the American empire….remeber when Lucas finally spoke the empire was America and the rebels were the Vietnamese…..
Good movie, inspiring and gay men everywhere are flocking to it as the weight room gays battle the tranny’s..
“only Spartan women give birth to Spartan men”
one of my favourite lines
my 15 year old son really really wanted to see this film – I took him and my dad and we were not disappointed
it was so inspiring to see men and women realizing that there is something worth fighting for in their own civilization – just the opposite of the warped “imagine” utopia of “nothing to live or die for”
we either recognize the worth of our heritage and fight to preserve it, or our granddaughters will be wearing burkas
I have this sick feeling that one day my kids and grandkids will be asking me “why didn’t your generation do anything?”
Happy Easter and Passover
An excellent film and you are right, it was a visual treat. Those are some hot Spartans, but for me it was their words, actions and ideals that made them so damn attractive.
Think of it as John Murtha’s role. I’m afraid I’ve only seen it four times.
I thought it was possibly the worst movie I have ever seen. That is two hours of my life I cant get back.
What a stinker. I almost walked out half way thru but my ride was staying.
ex-liberal, like you, it wouldn’t surprise me if our offspring ask us (Boomers): “why didn’t your generation do anything?”
For that reason, I’m pretty vocal about my non-pc opinions. I figure we only go around once–this life is not a dress-rehearsal for another chance–and we’d better get it right NOW. There is no “later.”
The Christian Scriptures say to be either hot or cold. If you are lukewarm, the Lord will spew you out of His mouth. I may have to go to confession for being too passionate at times, but by God’s grace, I’ll never be able to be accused of being “lukewarm.”
Being lukewarm = politically correct is killing us.
” Let me be absolutely clear: From the outset it was very apparent that fighting back WAS SIMPLY NOT AN OPTION…..Had we chosen to do so many of us would not be standing here today.”
Captain Christopher Air of the Royal Marines at the press conference after his release from the Iranians….
” Stranger, go tell the Spartans….
I can’t criticize the British sailors who were captured. The situation they were originally in was not one of life or death; they weren’t holding back hordes to save a city, or preventing an attack on the free world. Yes, the Iranians made a stupid, stupid blunder in capturing them. But if blood had been spilled in a pointless battle, that would have made things much much much worse. (“Only mistakes which end in death can’t be fixed.”) As it is, although the British now appear to have their tail between their legs, we have all won a small victory in exposing the Iranian actions during their captivity. We see the Left doesn’t care if Iran tortures people. We also see proof again that Iran is lead by an idiot – if they do things like this they must NEVER be allowed nuclear weapons. THIS will have been a defining moment in future policy decisions concerning Iran.
The movie definately was a stinker, all filmed in front of a gigantic rear projection screen what a dissapointment.
Photograpy and computer effects from some of the kids on You Tube are just as good.
a few years ago I read the book “Gates of Fire” by Steven Pressfield, about the battle of Thermopylae and it became and remains my favorite book. I heard some rumours a couple of years ago that someone was planning a movie, and was intrigued but unsure how they could make it into a movie. I no nothing about the graphic novel “300” but I’m sure it is entertaining. I haven’t seen the movie yet but will probably wait and buy the DVD when it comes out. the book I read didn’t mention sexual abuse but I guess that is what those Greek Malakas are known for.
Good movie, yes. Better movie? ‘Flags of our Fathers’ (Clint Eastwood, 2006). Just watched it…damn fine piece of film.
I hear that there is going to be a new movie coming out called “15”.
Should be a big hit with the dhimmi left.
Speaking of movies, Kate, did you happen to see this poster yet?
Ya gotta love Red Tory’s take on this.
http://redtory.blogspot.com/2007/04/spartan-chic.html
Don’t wait for the DVD. This is one of those movies to be seen on the big screen.
The left hates this movie..it portrays everything they find vile, like honor, patriotism, courage and valor.
But is usually disguised as “I didn’t like the special effects”.
Agreed – see this one in the theatre. No question.
Thanks for the Red Tory link. Wow, he just went flippin ballistic. Must have it a few nerves.
What is now driving them crazy is that 300 is now the runaway hit of the spring. I think I saw its over $250 million and still drawing crowds.
Maybe the left isn’t quite as in tune with the general population as they might think. Hopefully Hollywood gets the hint as well.
As I don’t have a password over at Red Tory, I couldn’t leave this comment:
Pretty much what you’d expect at a lib/left blog (hey, what’s the “Tory” doing in your name, bud?):
They’re all talking to themselves. Branch out, guys. I think you need to get out more.
Here is a link where you can watch the film.

hey, what’s the “Tory” doing in your name, bud?
I have always thought the red tories were aligned somewhere between the NDP and Green’s to me they often make libs seem down to earth and thats too weird.
Yeah, I think “Red Tory” is an oxymoron. Anyone who’s a Red Tory should join the Liberals, the NDP, or the Greens: There’s little to distinguish them from these other parties.
Are you listening, Joe Clark?
I too enjoyed this film, very much actually. For what it is worth, all of the information about Sparta is historically accurate, including the comments attributed to the women. “Only Spartan women give birth to real men” and “Come home with your shield or on it” both come from Greek inscriptions attributed directly to Spartan women! Spartan women were unique in Classical Greece in freely speaking their minds.
Spartan women were also unique in doing fitness training, competing in the Olympics, and being polyandrous (having more than one husband at a time).
Since this has curiously reared its head, would any of you say that Stephen Harper is a “Tory”?
Yes, “300” is a good movie, and doing well at the box office. It is reasonably accurate, too – not in its sometimes comic-book visual treatments, but in the story, and Leonidas’s statements.
I saw the movie on Easter Sunday, at the beginning of the commemoration of Vimy. Somewhat presumptuous, but a good alternative epitaph for the Vimy memorial might be,
“Go tell the Canadians, stranger passing by,
that here, obedient to their laws, we lie.”
