Prior to that, trains had mechanical brakes that had to be set for each car on a train, by going car to car and turning a wheel at the end of the car which tightened the brakes for that specific car. (Hence, the train crew member called a brakeman.) As can be imagined, that wasn’t a very good system. These mechanical brakes often failed for a variety of reasons.
Airbrakes were invented by an American engineer named George Westinghouse. The allowed the far better braking system to be controlled from one location by one crewman. And every car’s brakes were applied far quicker and with uniform pressure for each car on the train.
Within a decade or so, this vastly improved brake system became a global standard on all railways. Mr. Westinghouse holding the patents, his company made a LOT of money manufacturing airbrake systems to train manufacturers.

Jason’s bio said he studied “ethics”…how is this possible? …by definition one cannot be “ethical” and support Librano politics and syndicate dealings. Jason says he’s sorry, then he yanks all evidence of his misdeed, which to me is totally inconsistent with true repentence. I don’t think he’s sorry at all, only sorry about the reaction that he’s provoked. It’s got to be pretty bad when even a staunch Liberal blogger like Red Tory comes down on him.
