“Let’s hear it for the maple leaf”

An American blogger tips his hat to our troops in Afghanistan.

But it doesn’t seem to faze the Canucks. They continue to soldier on, taking the hard jobs that others eschew. It is safe to say that without the Canadian contingent in Afghanistan, the mission there would be in greater danger of failing, given that the US and British troops are already stretched to the limit. Their willingness to take on more than their fair share of the burden of this war should be recognized and applauded by every single American.

  1. As another American deeply thankful for Canada’s contribution to Operation Enduring Freedom (our term for the Afghan war), it does my heart good to see the word getting around.

  2. First there was Taliban Jack Layton/NDP.
    Now, it’s Taliban Stephane Dion/Liberal.
Both now in collusion with the Taliban propaganda machine/MSM.
It’s a tag-team; not to wonder; both are socialists.
Is Dion a French socialist, or, a Canadian socialist? Meme chose/same thing.
    …-
    TROOPS BATTLE TALIBAN PROPAGANDA
It’s not just heavily armed insurgents and suicide bombers Canadian troops are battling here — it’s also the Taliban propaganda machine.
DION ‘NOT COMMITTED’ TO AFGHAN ROLE
Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion has told
    a key caucus member
that he’s “not committed” to the Conservative decision
to keep Canada’s troops in Afghanistan
for another two years, setting the stage for a renewed debate about Ottawa’s role in the troubled country. (national newswatch)

  3. Funny how Dion had nothing to say in 2002 when Papa Jean committed the Canadian forces to Kandahar, or 2003 when Paul Martin extended the mission and moved the troops to Kabul and then back to Kandahar in 2005.
Of course he has no memory of ADSCAM or the fact that greenhouse gas emissions in Canada increased 30% while he was minister of the environment…..
The Liberals are stuck in the past because they can’t or won’t learn from it. I think I like things better that way, so the grown ups can get on with the job of governing the nation.

  4. Dion:

‘Yesterday, Dion expressed his discontent with the mission, saying that trying to “kill the Taliban in every corner of the mountains doesn’t work…’
Guess who’s helping doing the killing?

‘Up to 80 Taliban fighters have been killed by Nato forces in a four-hour firefight in southern Afghanistan.
A tip-off from local police allowed up to 150 Danish troops to join Afghan forces in an ambush on the militants in Helmand province early yesterday morning.
There were no casualties among the Nato soldiers, who were backed by helicopter gunships and fighter jets, a spokesman said…
“Danish reconnaissance patrols aren’t hanging out in the barracks waiting for springtime.”..’

  5. Canada has been “The Little Train That Could” repeatedly during the toughest times in modern history. So long as there’s a government behind the brave men and women of our armed forces, we will succeed in the Afgan mission.
That success will result from individual hard work, bravery and sacrifice from those who’s hearts are irresistably attracted to the idea that people everywhere want and need the same things: Food, Freedom and Future.
It is through selfless assistance and pure self determination that the bonds shackling the Afgan people will be broken so they can join the world as equals. God bless Canada.

  6. If only our citizens and (especially) our politicians were a match for our forces’ mettle and honour. We would be running the best nation in history.

  7. Martin B..well put, bravo!
If only leftists would put their money where their mouth is, i would attempt to listen to what they had to say….
Unfortunately, when it comes to fighting and dying for freedom and human rights…basic existence… it is always the right that does it, while the left talks a good game, or sabotages the effort…
There are times i believe that the left would have humanity live forever in poverty and with no hope, as an excuse for their continued existence.

  8. The Canadian military in Afghanistan is living up to its highest standard of proficiency dedication and sacrifice in the face of a hard fight. In spite of Dion, I can’t believe that proud Canadians are going to turn tail and run and leave our military hung out to dry on the left wing rhetoric of the Libranos. Surely we have a longer memory than that. Let Dion note that we are proud Canadians and we do not look good running with our collective tails between our legs.

  9. It’s only too bad that when the next federal election is held, probably some time next year, and the current Conservative interregnum is over, to be followed by probably another decade or more of Liberal rule, the troops will be withdrawn from the Kandahar area where they’re making a difference, and reassigned to other tasks more in line with “Canadian values”. Tasks such as building schools, training Afghan cops, or maybe guarding UN bureaucrats. And if those assignments turn out to be too violent for our sensitive and caring country maybe there’s some bee-keeping or gardening work they can do.
People who think that Dion is unelectable in Quebec, and that therefore the conservatives have a good chance for an extended stay in power, and with that that our commitments to Afghanistan will be honoured, I think are sorely mistaken – Bloc ridings will always be Bloc, but the ridings that are potentially federalist will vote for the party led by a Quebecer, as they always do. And as ever Canada’s position on Afghanistan, like on almost everything else, will be determined by Quebec.
