You know that Monty Python gameshow “Prejudice”, where they try to think of a derogatory term for the Belgians? (The best they can do is “miserable fat Belgian bastards” — although my favourite entry was “Let’s not call them anything, let’s just ignore them”…)
Anyway, a novelist has been charged with “insulting Turkishness”. I don’t know what they expected — there country’s name is Turkey, after all. It’s like naming your kid Bertha. But anyway, I thought we could play “I’m Spartcus!” in solidarity and insult Turkey too.
We won’t get arrested or have our cars smashed or have to go to court a few days after we’ve had a baby, but who cares? It’ll be fun.
I say we start calling Turkey “SuckyCryBabystan”. Weigh in, and do try to get the Armenian genocide in there somehow; that she mentioned it in her novel is what got her in trouble (yes, fictional characters are on trial in a country that may join the EU…)
UPDATE: Oh nuts (I mean, hooray) — she just got aquitted. That was fast! But they charge people with this “crime” all the time so if you want to have your insults ready for the next international incident, feel free to keep playing!

Islam is a religion of sangsar: the stoning to death of women. Sharia law governs the size of the stones to be used.
Down with Islam. …-
“During the continuous coverage in this country of Iran’s nuclear threat and its crucial support of terrorists in Iraq and elsewhere in the Middle East, there has been scarcely any mention of this horrifying dimension of the culture of Iran: sangsar, the stoning to death of women.”
Stoning Women to Death
Village Voice ^ | September 17th, 2006 | Nat Hentoff
On June 29, 2006, a court in the Islamic Republic of Iran sentenced Malak Ghorbany, a 34-year-old mother of two, to a brutal death by stoning after finding her guilty of adultery. . . . Two men who were found guilty of murder in the same court were only given jail sentences of six years. . . . The size of the stones used during the execution are required to be . . . not so large that they would kill a woman too quickly, nor so small that they would fail to cause serious injury or pain . …-

Meh. In Canada, university professors lose 2 weeks pay for questioning homosexuality oustide of the university. A Canadian professional hockey player gets suspended from his job for 5 games in the playoffs for calling his buddy and former room-mate a “fag”. Canadian citizens get jailed for sending nonthreatening letters to MPs demanding immigration reform. Canadian professional hockey players routinely cry on camera as they explain that their American wives forced them to ask for a trade to an American team. Looks to me like Canada is even more of a sucky baby than Turkey.
ok kids…time to start calling out the religion of peace….ask them on the street, in the stores, wherever..do u support sharia law? stoning of women? martyr virgin sex?….ask them how they feel about gays and lesbos…u will not have to wait long to see if you are dealing with an extremist…i let them know exactly how i feel, and they are typically very surprised by the fact that a canadian does not subscribe to the pc, appeasement, acceptance of everything mantra
Shittyendofthestickistan. We got the death cult but no oil.
Having a hard time insulting Turkey because at least there are sane people there trying to control the fundie morons.
I have an idea though. I call the United Nations a bunch of boot-lickers.
If Stephen Harper gives his speech and calls Hugo Chavez the “Devil’s Bitch” I’ll give Stephen my entire life savings…
Is this tale posted by Wretchard a cautionary tale?
George Jonas wrote an article some weeks ago in National Post wherein Jonas flayed the so-called Human Rights tribunals which enforce political correctness, multiculturalism, hate laws, etc.
Jonas pointed out that Islam’s sharia laws are the equivalent. Jonas went on to say that the priests/imams of Islam point this out and say: If you in the West do this suppression/stifling of dissent, we, in Islam, do it also. Imams say: Sod off, hypocrites. Jonas has it nailed. …-

Brendan Nyhan’s description of how he was forced out of American Prospect — or at least made so uncomfortable he had to leave — is a cautionary tale about the dangers of leaving your little sandbox for the greener pastures of a mega group blog or portal. By mounting the larger platform you gain a wider audience but do not imagine that all your advantages have been gained for free. Nyhan writes:

But this tendency towards herding ideas really throws away one of the most powerful properties of the Internet, its ability to float a noteworthy fact or meritorious idea to the surface of global consciousness within a few iterations. No matter where an idea or fact may appear on the blogosphere, it can be successively promoted until it reaches one of the Domain Name Servers of the memetic world, which in the liberal case is probably a site like the Daily Kos or the American Prospect. Once listed there, anybody can resolve to its origin by simply following the links. But growing partisanship means there will be ideas which the Domain Name Servers of the blogosphere will not list. There will be ideas which, because verboten, will by ideological fiat be buried. What this does is destroy the connectivity of the blogosphere. It slices apart the nodes on the network and once again, creates islands of information.
Ideologues of all stripes will doubtless delight in this, because it is a demonstration of power. But they will be wrong. It is an unwitting reversion to a defect; an expulsion from the blogosphere of the very property which made it so much more powerful than the mainstream media. How strange that the mainstream media should, even in its death throes, attract into its pit the very creatures which once sought to escape it. Yet those tempted to run back after the fatal glitter of the last century’s media should remember: be like the mainstream media, die like the mainstream media. Go back to your little sandbox. You will be the better for it. …-

Back in the 70s, an aquaintance who had back-packed through Turkey called the Turks “Arabs gone rotten”.

I miss Kate.
Can’t say I have much time for this post. However, Chirac’s doublecross on the sanctions is worthy of a scorn storm. IMHO.
OMG! I actually agree with a Bob comment… the shame of it all. Although Bob might watch his words lest the PC Police nab him for his lack of Canuckishness.
Speaking of being charged for ‘insults to Turkey’, how is that different from the election tactics of the Liberal Party, which had Paul Martin repeatedly asking Stephen Harper: ‘Do you LOVE Canada’?
Essentially the same thing. You may not criticize Canada under a Liberal rule. Remember their election ads, when criticism of their policies meant the dissolution of Canada (image of hideous Canadian flag dissolving..oh, I wish it would..but that’s another issue)?
Don’t we have a situation where criticism of anything to do with Quebec is defined as ‘bigoted’ and ‘unCanadian’ – even when the criticism is the unfair distribution of powers, the enormous waste and cost of bilingualism etc?
Don’t we have a situation where the only valid critique of a country, is to be completely and fully anti-American? If we move to an elected Senate, what do we hear – that such is ‘an American way of doing things’. Harper’s answer to that was that the US doesn’t have a monopoly on democracy.
By the way, Australia has an elected Senate, for terms of only 6 years, and an equal number per area (I think it’s 12).
But Canada has some of the fictional infrastructure of Islam. We refuse to critique ourselves, we refuse to allow criticism and analysis. Our only criticism is against individuals who attempt to change – and we then label them as ‘bad’, aka ‘American’. Now, is that a symptom of a mature or immature nation?
Kurdistan
(that should get their attention in Ankara).
The Turkish embassy has been the site of a number of incidents. In the 1970s and 1980s Canada was home to several radical Armenian groups. On April 8, 1982 Kani Gungor, the embassy’s commercial attaché, was shot in the parking garage of his residence and left permanently paralyzed. Several months later on August 23 Col. Atilla Altıkat, the military attaché, was assassinated while driving to work at the embassy. Both attacks were attributed to Armenian groups.
On the early morning of March 12, 1985 a van pulled up outside the embassy. The three occupants climbed on to the roof of the van and then jumped over the wall of the embassy. The three men, members of the Armenian Revolutionary Army, were armed with shotguns and grenades. The embassy was guarded by a private security guard Claude Brunelle, he confronted the assailants and a gun battle began. Brunelle fired four shots, but hit no one. He was hit in the chest and killed. The assailants detonated a bomb at the entrance of the building, and then entered the structure. The ambassador at the time, Coskun Kirca, fearing he was their target jumped from a second story window breaking a number of bones. The Armenians succeeding in taking twelve staff members hostage. Police response was swift and the building was soon surrounded. The assailants threatened a long siege but gave themselves up after only four hours.
After these incidents the Turks planned to leave their heritage structure for a more secure facility, but these plans have now been abandoned and major renovations to the embassy have just recently been completed.
On February 17, 1999 the embassy was again hit by violence. A riot by some 300 Kurdish nationalists resulted from the arrest of Abdullah Öcalan. Chunks of ice were thrown at the embassy and police, as were Molotov Cocktails. These set one embassy office alight and the uniform of an RCMP officer also caught fire. Both blazes were soon put out and no one was seriously injured. Several of the protesters were arrested.

Once again, ET, well said. It also dawned on me that Islam is trapped in a bind: those who would reform must first criticise, but those who criticise are threatened with death, hence, reform is stifled if not impossible. That’s an extreme manifestation of the same phenomenon to which you refer – intimidation of critics, rather than debate. Oddly, our left, masters of the milder western manifestation (Koz Kids, Rabble, et al) are the very ones calling for ‘debate’ with the debate-stiflers. Go figure.
Look, the French are biggest boosters of Turkey’s entry into the EU.
That, I think, says it all.
Shafak is only one among many (eighteen, to be precise) writers and journalists who are being harrassed via Article 301. You can read more about the cases here…

People, get away from the flyspecks (the usual partisan inversion and perversion of fact) and back to the pepper (what’s relevant to reality.)
You are cordially invited to have a look at a column in to-day’s Star (linked below,) hope for answers from Karzai and Harper, then worry about how to support the troops. Do “look beyond support-the-troops patriotism and the equally narrow, ethnocentric premise that forces of good and evil are locked in a struggle for civilization.”

Why do they hate Turkey?
Jonesy, they must be vegans.
Ahhh, the Ottoman Empire ain’t what it used to be. It is interesting to note that while over 90% of the country is muslim, the country itself and government is secular, a hold over from the empire days no doubt. So they can co-exist with infidels but are touchy about their Turkishness. Strange indeed.
Anti-Turkishness, Un-American activities…
Let freedom reign.
IIRC, it is Pres. Bush who is in favor of Turkey being included in the EU and France who opposes it.
The Islamists undoubtedly are very powerful in Turkey. And Europeans have decided (or had it decided for them) that they are not Christian countries. The EU has endorsed secularism and multiculturalism. But I think France and Germany also understand that the Islamists do not endorse secularism and multiculturalism and so they are very wary of constituting an official European Turkey.
I guess an official Euro Turkey would be a whole new breed./s
I think Pres. Bush believes to uphold the democracy there, the West must recognize and include our democratic Turkish allies.
IMHO it is very much in our own best interests to make sure that Turkey is with us, not against us.
Let the goddamed Europeans straighten things out over there. The french, germans and belgium’s, amongst others, criticize and undermine everything the US tries to do so lets see how they cope with it, it’s in their backyard. Their arrogant condescending attitude towards almost everything and everyone else may just put things in the proper perspective real quick, especially when they realize that big brother USofA is no longer there to back them up. When their backs are up against the wall, once again, lets see how they and their ethnic mix multicultural society holds up, would be interesting. Can’t you just see all those poor and abused out of work muslims lining up to serve their “new” country.
Mulims + Turkey = Murky
…which describes the state of their legal system rather nicely, I think.
Here’s a quote from Winston Churchill’s book “The River War”. This is from Wikopedia, where the note is made that this has been deleted from new editions. Maybe someone is making sure he isn’t charged posthumously with a 21st-century crime.
Wonder what old Winston would say about his being purged of any anti-Islamist ruminations?
How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property, either as a child, a wife, or a concubine, must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men. Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities – but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedan ism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it had vainly struggled, the civilisation of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilisation of ancient Rome. —Sir Winston Churchill, from The River War, first edition, Vol. II, pages 248-50 (London: Longmans, Green & Co., 1899).

Nude women more dangerous than bombs: Bashir
ABC ^ | 9-20-06
A hardline Indonesian Muslim cleric, who served time in jail for his role in the 2002 Bali bombings, has warned that scantily-clad women on TV shows are more dangerous than bombs.
“If one is asked which one is more dangerous, naked women or the Bali bomb, the answer is certainly the women with such revealing clothing,” cleric Abu Bakar Bashir was quoted by the state Antara news agency as saying …-

I’d turn it into a line of clothing and $100K-a-pop speaking engagements.

Since Germany and some other European countries have laws against holocaust denial, how can they welcome a country into the EU that officially denies its own genocidal history?

This obscenity should never be allowed in a Self-governing Nation. Particularly when we have a judicial system tested for a thousand years. Its why our own has eroded, with these quasi legal star chambers as enablers of twisted judgment.

From Montesquieu, about 1748, “Spirit of the Laws”, Book XXIV, Chapter III:
That a moderate Government is most agreeable to the Christian Religion, and a despotic Government to the Mahometan.
THE Christian religion is a stranger to mere despotic power. The mildness so frequently recommended in the gospel, is incompatible with the despotic rage with which a prince punishes his subjects, and exercises himself in cruelty.
From Chapter IV:
It is a misfortune to human nature, when religion is given by a conqueror. The Mahometan religion, which speaks only by the sword, acts still upon men with that destructive spirit with which it was founded.
John Quincy Adams on Islam:
“In the seventh century of the Christian era, a wandering Arab of the lineage of Hagar [i.e., Muhammad], the Egyptian, […..] Adopting from the new Revelation of Jesus, the faith and hope of immortal life, and of future retribution, he humbled it to the dust by adapting all the rewards and sanctions of his religion to the gratification of the sexual passion. He poisoned the sources of human felicity at the fountain, by degrading the condition of the female sex, and the allowance of polygamy; and he declared undistinguishing and exterminating war, as a part of his religion, against all the rest of mankind. THE ESSENCE OF HIS DOCTRINE WAS VIOLENCE AND LUST.- TO EXALT THE BRUTAL OVER THE SPIRITUAL PART OF HUMAN NATURE…. Between these two religions, thus contrasted in their characters, a war of twelve hundred years has already raged. The war is yet flagrant … While the merciless and dissolute dogmas of the false prophet shall furnish motives to human action, there can never be peace upon earth, and good will towards men.”
All of the above could just as easily have been said today.
I suppose the death cult can reform, by burning the Quran and dumping Mohammad onto historys dung heap of human monsters. But then, Dante already did that.
Well… Bob the troll /snipe seems to be on his meds today!
Good for you fella and I hope you stick to it! Seriously.

United States+Turkey:
“Turkey counts as a key ally for the United States, and thus Washington believes that the EU should take in the largely Muslim Mediterranean nation as a full member. For the US, Turkey’s EU membership would create a stable role model for the whole Islamic world.”
