Here we go again – the media has turned out in force to push the “Canadians don’t want an election” meme for the home team.
“Pollsters, strategists warn against Christmas election”. One wonders how they find the time, given the volume of lucrative government contracts they’re burdened with.
Where have we heard this before? Oh, right – last spring, when the weather was fair and the sidewalks dry and Harper had a 5 point lead in the polls. I wrote;
I’ve yet to hear much on radio this morning about this (on Rawlco or on CBC). Instead, they’ve been pimping the “Canadians don’t want an election right now” meme, an assist for Paul Martin’s “wait for Gomery” lifeline grab.
They say this as though there’s something especially distateful about voting in June – we’d really much prefer a December call.
I can see it now – party signs amidst the reindeer displays. Santa in Liberal Party colours.
Return your ballot to: Elections Canada, HOH OHO.
“You’re a mean one, Mr. Harper. You really are a heel. You’re as cuddly as a Christian, You’re as charming as an redneck American kicking the sick into the streets ….”
Jack Layton in that cute little elf suit.
So, elaborate, please. This alleged dread of elections is conspicuously silent on specifics. What precisely is the source for this Great National Reluctance we are supposed to be gripped with? An aversion to unprotected pencil sharing? The time required to study up on the letter ‘X’?
At any rate, I’m certain they have. If there is a difference between Liberal and opposition party supporters that makes Liberals’ blood run cold, it’s this – motivation. I’d walk a mile through the snow to evict the “entitlement culture” of Paul Martin & Co (read that link) from 24 Sussex.
How many Liberal supporters would do the same to keep them?

Update
Huh. Check out the results of this poll at CTV at the moment.
Should the Liberal government agree with the proposal put forward by the opposition parties and call an election in January?
Yes 5625 votes (53 %)
No4891 votes (47 %)
When one considers that there are three options offered (a vote before Christmas, a vote after Gomery’s second report, and the “compromise” of a January call – maybe “most Canadians” want a chance at the voting booth, after all.
And these ones.

Kate, I spent the weekend wondering why we so dread elections. I could only come up with 10.
An off topic reader tip.
It seems this woman could use some support.

Anything coming from the MSM and pollsters regarding an election date is suspect.
If Canadians are so tired of voting why not cancel them altogether. What need of democracy when we have the Liberals to take care of all our needs.
I say the time is now to end this messy democracy experiment and just appoint the Liberals as our overlords.
All hail Paul Martin the 1st!
The Right Honourable Chief Justice of Canada, Beverley McLachlin, P.C.
Learned Justices.
I see no inherent problem with Jack Layton’s proposal most recent proposal on confidence in the government.
The government has been found to be guilty of financial corruption in the Sponsorship fiasco.
Further, Karen Redman stated on May 25, 2005 the government were considering not observing confidence votes.
In light of the above two facts, if one wants to preserve the notion of democracy, rather than the sham of democracy, if the combined opposition cannot force a demonstrably corrupt government from office then the notion of effective democracy is dead. The alternative is to suggest we have a dictatorship and constitution be damned.
If that is the case, then Edmund Burke would have the citizenry pick up our guns and force the government from office. Should we all just lock and load then?
We are either a democracy or a grand farce. Where does it say anywhere that only the government can pick an election day when the government whip has in the past asserted they won’t observe confidence votes? What utter constitutional rubbish!! Is the government going to abide by a clear statement that it does not have the moral authority to govern? I should think it would, as anything less would paint it as dictatorial.
Is the government going to stop flying the Jolly Roger, or are they going to raise the Maple Leaf again?
Maybe the media and some constitutional experts need to reconsider their position, or are they all bought and paid for as well? Will government come out and make a clear statement that it will observe all confidence motions moral and otherwise? The government cannot have it both ways, we are either a democracy or we are a towering monument to hypocrisy and all the sacrifice that veterans made was for nought. If the Prime Minister is going to summon up HELL and HIGHWATER, how would he like it delivered?
When are the rules, really rules? Dissolution is proclaimed by the Governor General on the advice of the Prime Minister. Well if the Prime Minister is not observing confidence votes the advice to the Governor General is never going to come, then you have a constitutional crisis. In short, you haul out the long guns and start firing!
In other words, the government elects to disregard confidence votes when they are inconvenient and abide by them when convenient. Well of course the electorate is delighted to find out that constitutional principles are not principles at all but merely the whim of whoever happens to be ruling at the time. Welcome to the land of woolly bully. When is a confidence vote not really a confidence vote? The government needs to elucidate this new constitutional principle.
If the government proposes to behave like constitutional Philistines; should it at all be surprised when it is treated like one? It would appear the law of equity would apply here, when combined opposition parties put forth a motion expressing lack of confidence in the government.
Perhaps it is time for the true story of Saint Nicolaas:
His parents died when he was a young man, leaving him well off and he determined to devote his inheritance to works of charity. An opportunity soon arose. A citizen of Patara had lost all his money, and had moreover to support three daughters who could not find husbands because of their poverty; so the wretched man was going to give them over to prostitution. This came to the ears of Nicholas, who thereupon took a bag of gold and, under cover of darkness threw it in at the open window of the man’s house. Here was a dowry for the eldest girl and she was soon duly married. At intervals Nicholas did the same for the second and third; at the last time the father was on the watch, recognized his benefactor and overwhelmed him with his gratitude.
So if we are to celebrate the coming season of peace, perhaps it is better we not banish faith, hope and charity. As we salute those on November 11 perhaps we should keep these thoughts in mind, or would we as McCrae put it break faith and fail to pass the torch. And if we would do this, then their souls will not rest in Flanders fields.
Belinda Stronach was roundly criticized for breaking faith, in some newspapers and internet sites, accused of prostituting herself for a Ministers position. Indeed the spring session even revealed a memo from Sergio Mercado ordering all Canadian Immigration Officers to insist on seeing the full monty if a woman wants to come to Canada as a stripper. Indeed Hansard debates reveal, Vol.140, No. 031, 1st Session, 38th Parliament, that we will bring Romanian strippers to Canada. It is easy to condemn and villify women both great and small but a great deal more difficult to toss them a bag of gold. One might make the case that Peter McKay and not a few Romanian families have lost their loves to prostitution.
Is Canadian political life, as Lembi Buchanan of the Technical Advisory Committee on Tax Measures for Persons with Disabilities put it in a telephone conversation in respect of my son Nicolaas, all about the money.
So what does it really mean to have the Confidence of the House of Parliament?
While many parents may despair of modern culture, there is much to commend it if one looks diligently.
Like my son, who has taken to a group of musicians which you may recognize, who recorded from the thickets of Headly Grange, England. You may read more here:
http://www.johnowensmith.co.uk/headley/grange.htm
Our parliamentary system owes its heritage to England, perhaps you can reflect on some English musical heritage:
There’s a lady who’s sure
All that glitters is gold
And she’s buying a stairway to heaven.
When she gets there she knows
If the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for.
Ooh, ooh, and she’s buying a stairway to heaven.
There’s a sign on the wall
But she wants to be sure
‘Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings.
In a tree by the brook
There’s a songbird who sings,
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it makes me wonder.
There’s a feeling I get
When I look to the west,
And my spirit is crying for leaving.
In my thoughts I have seen
Rings of smoke through the trees,
And the voices of those who stand looking.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it really makes me wonder.
And it’s whispered that soon
If we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason.
And a new day will dawn
For those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter.
If there’s a bustle in your hedgerow
Don’t be alarmed now,
It’s just a spring clean for the May queen.
Yes, there are two paths you can go by
But in the long run
There’s still time to change the road you’re on.
And it makes me wonder.
Your head is humming and it won’t go
In case you don’t know,
The piper’s calling you to join him,
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow,
And did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind.
And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul.
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How ev’rything still turns to gold.
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last.
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll
It is no accident that our Beverley McLachlin spoke at the War Museum October 5th, 2005.
You state you have no political agenda.
What does confidence of the house then mean?
Dame Justice Beverley what say you?
So Rudolf the Reindeer, bite me! I would take St. Nicolaas any day of the week.
Wishing you a soulful Remembrance Day, and joyous Merry Christmas
Yours sincerely,
Hans Rupprecht CFP
Hans,
Some nice points. The Stairway to heaven quote may be a bit unrelated. Here’ one more appropriate:
Hey Momma, look at me
I’m on my way to the promised land
I’m on the highway to hell
(Don’t stop me)
And I’m going down, all the way down
I’m on the highway to hell
AC/DC
Does it seem likely that there may be a vote of confidence but just prior to that the Liberals will prorogue the house?
It seems to me that the Liberals are so against a December/January vote because the Conservatives and Bloc are so determined that they will get out the vote. The Liberals on the otherhand may not make the effort.
Is this a repeat of the 1992 election when turnout dropped and has continued to drop since? How many people will not vote because they do not want to support the corrupt Liberals but do not wish to vote for an alternative party?
2000 64.1 chretien
1997 67.0 chretien
1993 69.64 chretien
1992 71.8 chretien
1988 75.3
1984 75.3
1980 69.3 trudeau
1979 75.7
1974 71.0
Looks like the conservatives need to get out the vote. Disappointing Conservative leadership disenfranchising their supporters?
enough
One has to wonder about the mysterious 1992 election. Apparently, I didn’t get the memo on it happening. Cuz there wasn’t one.
That being said there is rarely an appetite for an election in Canada. But once called, people will vote.
The media assured me that we didn’t want a summer election either, didn’t they?
Let’s see, January is too cold,
same with Feb,
March could be too cold,
April, well no one wants one then,
May, everyone is too busy,
June, too many weddings,
July, summer holidays,
ditto for August,
September, well I assure you Canadians don’t want one then,
October, it might snow
November, what are you crazy, you can’t have one in November,
which of course leaves us with December and the dreaded Christmas election.
So let’s just appoint the Liberals ‘Leaders For Life’ and get it over with.
The Liberals had no hesitation about torpedoing Joe Clark’s government on 14 Dec 1979 on far flimsier grounds than the opposition has now. (The election was held 18 Feb 1980.)
Just flipped on the tv to CBC to see what the drivel was. They had on three native leaders bemoaning the upcoming election and what it would do to the meeting that they had worked towards for several years.
Here’s a tip; if it takes several years to get a meeting arranged with the government, it’s time for a new government.
If memory serves me correctly there is a minimum election campaign length but it can be longer, so why has the opposition parties not let the Canadian voters know that if it ends up at Christmas then it is solely Dr. dithers’ fault?
BTW: Isn’t Christmas a “Christian holiday? I thought Lieberal$ were secular…..
The highway to hell AC/DC may be Paul Martin’s tune; seeing as he has been in the habit of summoning up HELL and HIGHWATER on corruption.
I would not be one to banish; faith, hope or charity. Hence the stairway to heaven tune. I dance to a different drummer. I would wager so would many voters.
As I said to Jack Layton, in my recent email,
summoning HELL and HIGHWATER and calling on DIVINE PROVIDENCE is plainly hypocritical.
Well if the House of Parliament is the democratic temple, perhaps it is time to throw the moneychangers out.
That would put extra meaning back into the notion of NEW DEMOCRATIC PARTY. There is nothing wrong with righteous anger, it is what you do with it.
Still less, it is rather hypocritical to have the government call on Divine Providence in its throne speeches, whilst summoning up HELL and HIGHWATER on cronyism, mismanagement and corruption. Well the good news is Divine Providence will not be easily mocked.
Some time ago the PM made the statement:
http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/1079542113644_74951313/
“We have declared all-out war against waste and mismanagement. We will put an end to cronyism,” the prime minister said in French.
“I am going to change the way Ottawa works,” he said. “This is not a slogan, this is reality. We are going to change the way government works. And we will do it come Hell or high water.”
Well we have now had the Asian tsunami, flooding of New Orleans, and high water in Calgary, Alberta (June 2005) and Sherbrooke, Quebec (0ct 17, 2005.) This really has to stop; as HELL cannot be far behind.
You really have to be a little more precise in what you pray for as you may just get it.; one spiritual advisor once warned me.
For heavens sake, this HELL thing really has to be stricken from the national agenda; especially since November 11 Remembrance Day is coming. I trust you will be all putting away your political swords, and not show up a day late and several millions of dollars short, like VE-Day 60th celebrations?
I am certain Tommy would have brought this to the attention of the Prime Minister:
Dont delude yourself into thinking God can be cheated; where a man sows, there he reaps;
If he sows in the field of self-indulgence he will get a harvest of corruption out of it. Galatians 6:7
It would appear we have some House Cleaning to do.
Who in his right mind, would really summon all the demons from HELL. I think I ‘ll stay on my stairway to heaven. My family heritage has done Hades. Apparently, HADES doesn’t have much to commend itself, for those who take Remembrance Day seriously.
With kind regards
Hans
Joe Clark was torpedoed in 1979 by the Libs. as payback they torpedoed their own candidate in Calgary Central to ensure a Joe win and a continuance in the right split. They will eventually appoint him as senator.
The liberals hijacked the treasury under Cretan -( purposeful sp. ) and now campaigns are funded by the split of popular vote and its written in Law. so they have arranged to hijack your money forever.
I got pravda (CBC) to take the Khadar family out of the Remembrance day home page. what a filthy bunch of morons, and the khadars as well.
I am glad to read that most Canadians do not want a December election. I would expect almost all Liberals to come within that category. The opposition parties should be trying their best to pick a time that does not suit the majority of Liberals. Once you subtract Liberal supporters, I would expect a majority of Canadians (i.e., non-Liberal) would be pleased to pass judgment on the Liberals right away. And if exercising their franchise in December is too much trouble for them, it’s just as well they do not vote.
“Bustle in your hedgerow” is an english term for a girl being horney. but I would think Belinda would be sporting a brazilian . so maybe a “bustle in your trim lawn’ would be better.
Another thought: Why doesn’t backstabbin’ Belinda tell the Lieberal$ and the rest of the world just what the secret agenda is? Just wondering, that’s all.
cal2:
Given Belinda’s recent Viagra comments with respect to Stephen Harpers “stiff neck”; you may have a “point”.
Christmas will be heavy on the fruitcake this year.
You have to look at it from a liebral point of view… In their circles, people REALLY DON’T want an election! It is only natural for this sentiment to leak into the media. The colder, the better. I wonder if the liebral war-chest is big enough this time.
Cal2:
“I got pravda (CBC) to take the Khadar family out of the Remembrance day home page”
Good on ya, Cal2…it’s getting harder for MSM to blithely backhand those who believe in the contributions Canadian veterans played during the great wars to further freedom and democracy. They’d rather portray it to our citizens as shameful chapters in our history where Canada behaved the same way as the Neanderthal Americans in Iraq.
But it’s hard to use the Kadr’s as an innocent “Gerber” poster family when their criminally subversive and murderous past is becoming clearer all the time.
Thanks for calling BS on the CBC!
Re: the liberal warchest: there is still a lot of money missing that will never be found, and the Crowns and exempt Foundations have not been audited. You can bet that they have bags full of cash hidden away somewhere.
We seem to be on thin ice here. Human nature says save face above all else.
Paulie was never about to say, *OK three mouseqateers, I’ll do as you demand.*
Paulie has an ego as big as one of his CSL Liners. Most look though and tell the three singing for an election to, *Go to hell!*.
Now what? TG
Another example of the MSM acting as if they are part of the governing class…protect the governing class talking points at all cost…including misleading the public into believing a non confidence dissolution of this parliament equals a Christmas election. This is rank misdirection as a loss of confidence simply forces the government and opposition ( with mediation by the GG) to negotiate either a governing coalition or set a date for a general election….and NO WHERE is it written in parliamentary process that the election must take place within a month or less of non confidence dissolution….parliament can can go as long as six months in dissolution before a general election must be mandated by the GG….all non confidence means is that the government must either form a coalition to continue in power or or agree to call an election at a time agreeable to all parties….the GG usually acts on the advice of the PM in the case of dissolution due to no confidence and will set an election date on his say so (unless a majority of parliament disagree)….So in reality, IF we go to an Xmas election because of non confidence it will be because Paul Martin and a parliamentary majority want it that way….and NO ONE in parliamentary seats is stupid enough to call the election during Xmas month….total disinformation from the Kanadian media
The MSM is sensationalizing the misdirection of an Xmas vote as a scare tactic and low level propagandist ploy to plant false ideas (like nonconfidence=Xmas vote,Harper can’t win, people don’t want to vote…yadda yadda) in the voting public’s colective thinking.
Heir Goebbels would be proud of the constant misinformation spewed from central Canada’s patronage MSM…they really DO think they are part of the ruling regime…No longer the 4th estate but part of the single party Canadian state.
So our politically appointed GG may very well be the one who announces if we deserve a democratic election? Gee wonder who’s side she’ll be on knowing full well she could lose her lucrative spot at the trough.
“If the government proposes to behave like constitutional Philistines; should it at all be surprised when it is treated like one? ”
Dammit Hans I wish I had said that 😉
I read this morning that only 17% of people polled wanted an election now. That is a surprise to me. Maybe the question asked was something like would you want to vote on Xmas eve, Xmas day or Boxing day or not until anothe rday?
Listening to talk shows in Vancouver it seems to only people who say they don’t want an election now are the talk show hosts and a very few stragglers.
Gee whiz, I clicked on the “Paul Martin and Co” link that Kate provided, and unless my eyes are blurry, it seems that when a mafia family who Gagliano had worked for as an accountant laundered over $21 million through a Quebec bank over eight months, that bank’s CEO was Raymond Garneau, who happens to be a special investigator in Paul Martin’s Loan syndicate.
Garneau was later appointed by Paul Martin to be a director of the Bank of Canada, and in a trivial sidenote, Garneau is now CHAIRMAN OF GOMERY’S ADVISORY COMMITTEE.
Fortunately, none of these things can be true, because if they were, the MSM would be all over this — am I right, or what, eh?
Nothing more telling about the state of Indian Affairs in this country than that press conference with the chiefs. No bones about it, they want an NDP or Liberal government elected. Why? Big spenders, of course, with no demand for accountability. After all these years, and all those billions, the state of reserves demands an audit of the aboriginal ministry. Flimsy pre-fab housing, boiled water advisories, inadequate health care, soaring rates of diabetes, and thousands of Natives waiting for the white man to tell them where they will be moved to next, rather than their bands or councils taking the initiative and demanding better infrastructure/new housing, etc. We’re all asleep at the switch if we let this go on. Looks to me as though the chiefs want to maintain the status quo and the hell with the rest of us.
I just keep thinking of Sheila Copps in the reindeer suit, with horns tied to her head….Actually, now that I think of it, the horns tied to her head quite suit her.
Right on Mrs Thatcher!
Although I would add, why don’t the chiefs start screaming at business to move their plants and operations to the reserve? Could it be because:
1. There is a strong, eager and motivated workforce just chomping at the bit for job opportunity and advancement.
2. Locating on the reserve gives a company the incentive of tax breaks from the federal government.
Am I dreaming or what?
Pass the firewater.
Careful, Jim – it’s hunting season.
“Massive” tax cuts proposed by the Libs:
An immediate decrease in the lowest tax bracket rate from 16% to 15%, plus an immediate increase to the basic personal exemption. This works out to:
35000
(8148)
One has to wonder why the Liberals are saying Canadians don’t want a Christmas election?
Aren’t they the one’s that are so politically correct that they have done away with Christmas pageants in schools, refuse to wish anyone a Merry Christmas, just Season’s Greetings or Happy Holidays.
Shouldn’t they say that Canadians don’t want a Winter Solstice election?
Beside that a lot of their supporters don’t celebrate Christmas anyway. You would thing that they would jump at the chance of a December election.
Pravda doesnt want a christmas election – with all those unions to square up with vacation at year end they would have to subcontract Mike Duffy, mind you splitting him for two networks would still leave plenty at 100kg each.
Am I the only one enjoying the misery/apprehension/terror/spinning going on across the MSM? What on earth are they so afraid of that they have to keep feeding their pundits/guests/lapdogs the same old same old “Canadians don’t want an election and will punish those who force on.” Brownie points and a bottle of the finest scotch in the world to one of Cherub Duffy’s guests who pointed out that by aligning himself with Harper, Jack Layton has just pointed out to all who care that stephen harper isn’t such a scary guy after all. Look, see, I can work with him so there’s nothing to fear. Oh joy. Christmas bells are ringing.
must admit this is the best looking GG of all time. surprised she doesnt have more kids – except she is saddled with that old separatist without government provided viagra.
Mrs. Thatcher,
Well said! Indian Affairs needs to audited. As you said the billions of unaccountable monies that the Chiefs have received and yet nothing ever filters down to the people that Indian Affairs is suppose to protect. Isn’t amazing how they are so worried about this meeting in Kelowna going ahead?
One other point to question: Where in the constitution does it give the right to self govern? There is only two levels of government in the consitution but now the liberals have added a third!!!
On that note I would like to appologize for figures I had previously entered regarding this meeting. I had put in 30-40 billion when in fact it is “only” 3-4 billion being promised to First Nations. I am very sorry for the mis information..
Mrs. Thatcher and Mary, I was going over the Elections Canada donations lists last night and noticed something that shoud’ve suprised me, but I found myself not suprised at all. It seems that the LPC is the only party that native bands, aboriginal groups, associations and such seem to donate money to. Do you think there’s a connection between this and the lack of accountability, plus the fact too many band administrations have been caught taking band funds for themselves. They must have learned that from the Liberal’s, eh?
The chiefs behave like capos, and so do the Liberals. They’ve learned their lessons well, and there is nothing more terrifying than the thought of an audit of Indian Affairs. Nothing. And the the Libs and their supporters, including chiefs, will do absolutely anything to keep that from happening. CTV anchor bimbo already feeding chiefs the line about Tom Flanagan, one of Mr Harper’s closest advisors, being a real concern for the First Nations people. Blessedly, I don’t think anybody believes anything the Libs say anymore.
Don’t think of it as a “donation”, Bruce.
Think of it as “flow-through” campaign financing.
Heh, Heh, Heh!
The CTV poll has been taken down, guess they don’t want the sheeple wondering what’s wrong with this picture when the media assures them that they don’t want an election now!
It seems ironic that the Liberals and their media have their knickers in a tight knot over a Christmas election. Under the Liberals, store clerks are discouraged from wishing customers Merry Christmas, lest they offend a citizen of this diverse country. Store Clerks are told to wish customers Happy HolidaysChristmas Election scare? What a country
I like their new poll more:
Do the measures in Ralph Goodale’s mini-budget make you more inclined to see the liberals stay in power until a spring election?
Yes: 23%
No: 77%
Wanna bet this will never be reported anywhere and will disappear into obscurity shortly?
I’ve also been thoroughly enjoying the MSM and pollsters in a mad panic. What about the poll last week that said Harper has to get in touch with with the urban youth (18-35) vote. Yet over the last couple of years Elections Canada has been warning that the future of our democracy is in jeopardy as many disenfranchised youth have decided to forgoe the election process. Ads were always running on MuchMusic to encourage young people to go out and vote, but they never did. I guess the Liberals are hoping Harper will spend all his time campaigning in the post-secondary institutions while they are going after the golden goose.
