The 40 most obnoxious quotes of 2006.

I don’t find this particularly obnoxious. I am a (Canadian) patriot, but I understand if not everyone buys into it. Some people just have a more international outlook, and don’t relate well to these organizations called “countries”.
They still pay their taxes, they still obey the laws, and to demand more violates their right to freedom of conscience. If Canada demanded rabid patriotism from all of its citizens then I would be less patriotic.
From Radio Netherlands about the current NATO offensive in Afstan–sound familiar?
http://www.radionetherlands.nl/news/international/#5118457
“Dutch troops involved in NATO operation in Kandahar
The Socialist Party and the Green Left party want Defence Minister Henk Kamp to clarify the Dutch involvement in a large-scale NATO operation in southern Afghanistan. Since Friday, hundreds of NATO soldiers in the province of Kandahar have been engaged in a major operation to push back the Taliban. The Dutch troops, who are stationed in the neighbouring province of Uruzgan, have been providing both air and ground support.
The two left-wing parties say this points to a further change to the original mission of the Dutch contingent, which was to focus fully on reconstruction work. The governing coalition parties, the Christian Democrats and the conservative VVD, say it is only natural that Dutch troops should come to the assistance of their allies in Afghanistan.”

The silent question of where is all this Middle East posturing going to end, as some of us more insightful ones in the West are asking about Islam et al, is disturbingly and insightfully explored in “THE CURSE HAS COME UPON US” @ http://drsanity.blogspot.com/

Islamic Disco Features Same-Sex Dancing Only…
Green light for Islamic ‘disco’ in Kelantan
Syed Umar Ariff
KOTA BARU: No alcohol served, no mingling or dancing between men and women, and no showing of aurat (body parts that must be covered). Welcome to Islamic disco, according to Pas.
Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat has given the green light for the setting up of discos in the State, as long as Islamic rules – as stipulated by the Pas-led government – are adhered to.
He said he was not opposed to dancing in discos but it must be between members of the same sex.
“I do not see any reason to forbid them (discos operating under Islamic regulations). This is because dancing is just a form of body movement.
“When dancing is done with the aurat covered and there is no inter-mingling, everything should be okay,” he said.
Muslims generally accept that aurat for a woman is her whole body except the face and the hands while a man’s aurat is the part between his navel and knees. …-

Time Magazine, in partnership with CNN, two of the most ‘mainstream’ of the MSM, bias/slant and all, have chosen their ‘Person-of-the-Year-Award’.
Yes, from organizations who daily ‘try’ to control and shape the news, ‘instill’ public opinion, direct social values and more, have made their choice.
For decades the Media has ignored the silent majoriy and ‘covered the news’ in a covert-operation like fashion.
And so they have just announced that the 2006 Person-Of-The-Year Award is ; (drum roll).. it is
~~~~~ YOU !!! Yes YOU, .. Kate, blogers, commenters,us, every where. Because for the first time in history the Media Barrons no longer have control of the agenda.
An example was the 2005 election campaign. The media was a way behind the blogs and so in December had to admit it by first suggesting that their previously rigged ‘polling numbers’ had magically changed over the xmas holidays. What a joke.
Also, despite the media’s blindly backing con-artist Al Gore with saturation-bombing fiction, the blogs have seen through his scam for years. Will they soon report the “tide-is-turning” by siting some ‘recent poll’ ??
Dion’s Dream Team/Equipe des Reves, as is said in France.
Top draft choices:
Ignatieff: Numero 2; I Love Israel/Hezbollah, too;
Kennedy: Food Bank manager, Mangez;
Rae: Power Corp., and Uncle Moe.
…-
Dion welcomes Ignatieff
Liberal leader Stephane Dion named Michael Ignatieff Monday as deputy leader of the Liberal Party of Canada.
Dion said he would annonce new roles for Bob Rae and Gerard Kennedy in Toronto Tuesday, calling his former rivals for the Liberal leadership his “dream team.
(Montreal Gazette) …-
I wonder how Belinda,and her team of vacuous “Barbie Dolls”,feel about Karen Redmond not getting this coveted position? Wasn’t she actively campaigning for said position? So much for Dion’s promise to the Lib.women,about boosting # of women in his “team”.Just another broken Lib.promise I guess..no news here folks..move along!Another thot,maybe he couldn’t find a Lib.Whiny Woman smart enough!
Just exactly how is it possible that Canadians have any patriotism at all? A country with no identity other than “we’re not America”? A country that has an established policy of multiculturalism which in practical terms, states: “your culture is just as good if not better than ours, so please don’t give it up and when your numbers exceed ours, we’ll be happy to toss out our culture and replace it with yours, Mr. Mohammed.” Oh you want to subjugate women and murder Jews and homosexuals? I haven’t really thought about that–I have such an international outlook you know.
So “rabbit”, (and I’m sure I can safely assume YOU haven’t bred like a rabbit, although your Islamic soon-to-be-rulers HAVE) did you take that name because you wish to be put to death like a weak little rabbit? Halal style?
Last year, there were a record number of hurricanes coming out of the Carribean. As I recall, all of the environmentalist whackos were going on and on about how this was proof of “climate change/global warming”.
Correct me if I’m wrong…but, this year, I don’t think there was a single one…at least none that made it to land.
I’m not as enlightened as our enviro-friends…so I must ask: Is the opposite of last year’s “evidence” still, in some whacked out way, also proof of this climate change thing?
Warren Kinsella( musings) has just called the news media unscientific,(duh, yes) among other things, and so is conducting his own poll.
His catagories include; best reporter, worst rep, best journo, worst jor, worst media stunt, ect. and best blog. We already know that. sda by a landslide.
Have to admit, his poll is a good idea. But, what are your thoughts on having to provide e-dress, name ?? Can eliminate some data by ‘suspecting’ the name isn’t real ?? Dunno.
How about that Kate! She destroyed the competition in the Best Canadian Blog Category by getting over 53% of the vote!
Round of applause.
Kate take a bow, job well done!
took part in Kinsella’s “unscientific online poll”.
Plugging it here should push his “hits” higher.
talk about getting skewed…..
Re the Grope and Flail story on Dion. In the same story, Dion says that there will not be a spring election.
I’ve spent the last two weeks watching the MSM get all lathered up about the supposedly impending spring election based on nothing more than favourable poll results for the Liberals.
What a difference a week makes. The most recent polls show that the Liberals’ lead has largely evaporated. Coupled with the fact that it is common knowledge that the Liberal Party is broke, Dion’s comment should come as no surprise. What was the MSM thinking when it ignored this critical fact? I sometimes think that they really believe that the Canadian public is just that clueless.
I suspect that Dion’s abrupt shifting of the Liberal Party to the left, while it has captured the imagination of many NDP voters, is probably starting to give many right-of-centre Liberals pause for thought.
My prediction is that you will not see an election before fall at the earliest. And if Dion doesn’t sharpen his communication skills quickly, we might hear him expressing a desire to put it off even further.
B.Hoax – yes, I thought the Time’s choice was excellent. But it isn’t simply that the MSM are out of power; the choice also acknowledges that information of any kind, not only that found in The News, is communicated in a different manner than the old linear top-down mode.
Our modern knowledge system is a ‘complex adaptive network’. A nice book on this is Manual Castell’s ‘The Rise of the Network Society’. And that’s exactly what we are, a networked global system made up of enough diversity to enable interaction (jello doesn’t interact; it congeals)..and enough commonality to enable collaborative interaction.
And this network actually operates in a non-linear or ‘many-links’ mode rather than the old mode where information came from an authority down to non-authorities.
Nowadays, information emerges onto the electronic web; it is instantly communicated – everywhere. BUT, it is open rather than closed. You, the individual, may comment on it, debate, dissent, clarify. And then – someone else will comment,debate, critique. Errors of fact are rapidly picked up and critiqued – as we have seen in the Reuters, AP, NYT releases. As we saw in the Danish cartoons – which showed how an imam had faked three cartoons. Al Gore, Kerry and the Swift Boat, Dan Rather…on and on. Wikepedia, the Blogs..
Essentially, this means a transformation of power. Rather than information or knowledge resting within a static hierarchy of control, the notion of authority over the veracity of information becomes flexible and rests within, strange as it may seem, the facts, the truth. Not within WHO says What, but within the veracity of What. And veracity is open to accountability, to testing, to validation.
This flinging of knowledge out into the open, so that it can no longer be used as propaganda to control people – is a vital agent for democracy. That’s why statist societies try to censor participation in the Internet – they will lose that fight in the end.
Bryceman, you obviously haven’t been paying close enough attention, that’s all. Absolutely Everything is either caused by, as a direct result of or a symptom of……Global Warming!
Why is Bob Rae needed to prepare the Lib’s election policies? This may be too far in the past for regular media outlets, but I recall a Liberal Policy Convention (combined with a leadershit race) all of, oh, three weeks ago. Are the Liberal policies already out of date, or do they need to bring back ‘da true values represented by Joltin’ Joe V-Man and that corrupt, petty little guy.
Did the Lib’s even publish a Policy Document after the Montreal convention?
The Gates of Vienna has a most interesting post!
The real interesting part is Who and Where this originated…………Left Wing Euro- Intellectuals have not been very honest about the Islamist threat to date! Is this changing?
Re; Natalie Mains on Patriotism…..a decidedly un-patriotic and self absorbed music celeb who takes it upon herself to use the venue afforded her by her paying fans to spout off on HER political position ( nobody asked )..who subsequently gets royally trashed by those same fans ( or former fans ) ….then takes all to task by mounting a PR campaign and propaganda film…takes her critics to task because they are offended!! Yes that’s hubris and that is also hypocrisy ….. do as I say not as I do says N. Mains!
If that is Dions dream team, he must have horrible nightmares. Some wannabe expert on global crap was asked by the cbc reporter. What can we, as individuals do, to help save the planet. His answer, go see Al Gores movie. How many emmissions would be emmitted if we all drove to a movie theater, to see that crap. Is he really a front man for Gore. Hey, idiot, we cdns do not do anything or agree anything the US does, pay attention to the media and liberals. And, a cdn judge has just ordered a cdn citizen, with family in Ont. deported to that evil USA. If he gets raped while in jail will he be able to sue the cdn govt for torture, at the hands of the justice system. Will the media give it 24/7 coverage, and will some lawyer take his case. Of course not, he is cdn afterall.
With all the online polls, surveys etc, here is a question I would like answered. How many terrorists, taliban, insurgents etc have been captured by our troops or other nato troops, that were carrying a koran and prayer mat. Do these terrorists, when rioting in streets, stop 5 times a day to pray. I just see constant rioting, never a cease riot to pray. What are the times they must pray, that would be a good time to attack.
Good luck to all the troops taking part in the latest nato offensive.
Joseph Williams,
I read ‘The curse has come upon us’ and it is at least rational, if not insightful. I have agreed with this sort of reasoning in the past. I don’t agree with the pessimists – I don’t believe Islam will become a dominant religion in the west and neither will we become ‘dhimmis.’ That’s historically foolish thinking and without precedent. Noisy and arrogant Islam might have a short window to play bully while the west wrings it’s collective hands and the left battles the right about what to do.
But as the writer wonders, what terrible tragedy may come because of this indecision?
The problem with Islam is Islam, not a handful of fanatics. Zarqawi said in an interview that he imitates Mohammud, based on a verse spoken by him in the Hadith, “I have been sent with the sword, between the hands of the hour, until Allah is worshipped alone.”
That in a nutshell is the goal of Islam, with Mohammud as the ‘perfect’ example and the Quran as the ‘uncreated’ road map and inspiration. To that extent, I don’t think there are moderate Muslims. There are murder obsessed fanatics, unactivated fanatics (watching from the sidelines), and apostates (regardless if they still refer to themselves as Muslims). The apostates, like Hirsi Ali, are the unlikely ones the west are hoping to help reform Islam.
I think it’s madness to allow any more Muslim immigration until the situation is studied and Islam fully exposed. Our security is overwhelmed and the taxpayer overburdened. They occupy far too much of our time and make us unneccesarily worry. Regardless of how many ‘decent’ Muslims there might be, their religion is not our problem.
Based on the current military and imperialistic push of Islam and on the brutality of western history, the writer wonders whether the west will resort to the unthinkable, in the end, in order to protect its own civilization. That being some form of genocide.
Everybody should hope that it wouldn’t come to that. However, it’s going to take the defeat of multi-culturilism and restoration of pride and purpose in our own dominate culture in order to create a pointed and legal intolerance of Islamic intolerance, both here and abroad.
All bets are off, though, if there’s another major terrorist strike in North America.
Huh? What?
“YOU” (meaning you and me) are Time magazine’s Man of the Year?
What a rip-off. Everyone knows that honour should have gone to Dan Rather.
Unless the Aaron Wherry from Macleans.ca has gone to the A. Coyne school of sarcasm & humour this one is a leap, even for them.
Jann Arden has incorporated an anti-war song (from the Vietnam era) into her latest album. Therefore be it resolved that since Jann Arden(“JA”) is a popular Canadian artist and JA is from Calgary PMSH will lose Alberta and if he can’t win Alberta the Harper is doomed.
I know there was a disclaimer regarding protest songs in the 2004 US election but the argument continues in a later paragraph.
Now I like JA, her music, her self-depracating sense of humour, but I don’t give a rat’s you-know-what, what her or any other celebrity has to say on any political issue. They are no better informed than I, I have the ability to think for myself and to quote our host(ess)”you don’t speak for me”
Thanks for the Gates of Vienna link. The article on veils and also, the German Church’s rejection of being submerged by Islamism, are both signs that the West, in Europe, is starting to fight back. That rejection includes Denmark, France, the Netherlands and the UK.
I also feel that the West will not be lulled into ‘dhimmitude’; it will reject the ideology of Islam and the multiculturalism that has enabled that ideology to become so dominant.
I also feel that the Middle East, which is the source of Islamic fascism, will ‘turn the corner’ into democracy. I think it important to consider that we ARE winning this war – despite all the sneers of the Left who openly hope that the West will lose the war against Islamic fascism. [Such a pathological desire, to hope for the success of a system that represses every utopian ideal of the left – including feminism, gays and lesbians, multiculturalism, pluralism and so on.]
We are winning because the fight against tribalism has become internalized – as it ought to have been right from the start – within the ME states. The ME has been trapped within tribalism, privileging one tribe that dominated, by virtue of oil funded military, all other tribes. And, prevented the majority of the population from participating in an industrial economy and having any political power. This repression resulted in an externalization of force – much like a pot boiling over.
Now- the heat is within the pot, and the battles are within the states – where tribes are battling for power. They will do this until they realize that they must give up tribalism and form a civic (non-tribal) society, with full participation in the economy and political authority to all citizens. Not just to the dominant tribe.
I think the current tribal fighting in Iraq is a sign that tribalism is breaking down…It must go through this fight – and then, will move to a civic society. A civic society had been prevented from emergence by the dominance of one tribe in Iraq. Same thing in Afghanistan.
So, I think that the ‘tide has turned’ – and predict a struggling emergence of democracy in the ME – and this is all thanks to George W. Bush.
And, Europe will pick itself up…and move out of the cultural relativism of multiculturalism.
So- there’s hope for the world!
I see that Martha Hall Findlay is planning on selling her big red bus on ebay. I think that the conservatives should buy it and use it for campaign advertising in the next election, perhaps drive it over a cliff…
I’ll through in a few bucks to see that happen.
FEDS TO SELL MIRABEL LAND BACK TO FARMERS
Prime Minister Stephen Harper says Ottawa will sell thousands of hectares of land back to farmers who were displaced in the push to build the failed [Trudeau Liberal] Mirabel Airport….-
Trudeau’s Airport: Mirabel$$$$$$
What made the Trudeau airport thing really disgusting was the fact that they renamed the Dorval airport after him, even though it was the Mirabel airport that he created, which ended up costing millions of dollars for nothing (as it is now closed to passenger travel). If they wanted to give Trudeau an airport, why not give him the one he was directly responsible for building? …-
Many Food Bank Users Not Eating Healthfully
Cindy Clyne and Michael Hammond
Monday, December 18, 2006
Not only are area food banks a little low on food, but it seems they’re not always getting the right food.
Moe Garahan of the group “Just-Food” says many food banks receive a lot of pre-packaged goods high in preservatives and starches. This means those who struggle just to put something on the table also struggle from poor nutrition.
Garahan says when you’re only able to access high-sugar, high-carbohydrates, and highly processed foods, you face the risk of a whole host of health issues like obesity. That’s why her group is asking people to consider making cash donations to food banks rather than just donating prepackaged food.
David Frum points out this heart wrenching article in the Washington Post by the daughter of an anonymous sperm donor.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/12/15/AR2006121501820.html
****
When she was 32, my mother — single, and worried that she might never marry and have a family — allowed a doctor wearing rubber gloves to inject a syringe of sperm from an unknown man into her uterus so that she could have a baby. I am the result: a donor-conceived child.
And for a while, I was pretty angry about it.
I was angry at the idea that where donor conception is concerned, everyone focuses on the “parents” — the adults who can make choices about their own lives. The recipient gets sympathy for wanting to have a child. The donor gets a guarantee of anonymity and absolution from any responsibility for the offspring of his “donation.” As long as these adults are happy, then donor conception is a success, right?
Not so. The children born of these transactions are people, too. Those of us in the first documented generation of donor babies — conceived in the late 1980s and early ’90s, when sperm banks became more common and donor insemination began to flourish — are coming of age, and we have something to say. …
Growing up, it didn’t matter that I don’t have a dad — or at least that is what I told myself. Just sometimes, when I was small, I would daydream about a tall, lean man picking me up and swinging me around in the front yard, a manly man melting at a touch from his little girl. I wouldn’t have minded if he weren’t around all the time, as long as I could have the sweet moments of reuniting with his strong arms and hearty laugh. My daydreams always ended abruptly; I knew I would never have a dad. As a coping mechanism, I used to think that he was dead. That made it easier.
Drive – through – food banks for the deranged Dominion, courtesy of Gerard Kennedy, Stephane Dion, Igggy and the boys of the ‘brown enevelope’ Librano band!
“rabbit”:
“If Canada demanded rabid patriotism from all of its citizens then I would be less patriotic.”
I suggest that “rabid patriotism” is an oxymoron; you are actually talking about nationalism now: a stunted, xenophobic state ideology which is a world away from simple love of country and home.
Saddened to see no quotes from George Monbiot (aka Moonbat) of The Guardian newspaper here in the UK.
A sample:
“Every time someone dies as a result of floods in Bangladesh, an airline executive should be dragged out of his office and drowned.”
A truly vile individual.
You realize that Garth Turner is congratulating himself on winning the Time magazine person of the year award.
It’s ‘You, You, You!’!
And what will they buy with money instead of non perishable food. Probably something those using the facility can’t cook, or doesn’t like. After the fiasco with MADD, who in their right mind would give money to any of these organizations. Get real, not everyone likes tofu and sprouts. When I donate to food banks, I try to give something that is not ordinarily given, for a treat. Even those who have fallen on hard times deserve a treat.
I’m not sure what rabbit meant by “rabid patriotism”…I take it he views Canada in an aloof manner (take it or leave it…it doesn’t matter…Canada is just a place I happen to be in at the moment). Funny how rabbit doesn’t want to love his country, but if he found himself in a mess I sure that he’d want his country to love him.
Poor Bono, he left the US empty handed. What was it he wanted. Guess he shouldn’t have bashed the US so mercilessly. Still wondering why having our troops go to Africa to be killed would be more satisfying than dying in Afgan.
Some people just have a more international outlook, and don’t relate well to these organizations called “countries”….They still pay their taxes, they still obey the laws, and to demand more violates their right to freedom of conscience.
So, Rabbit, now, I’m not calling you a twit of major proportions, but, these “some people” too internationalized to take comfort in the smaller paradigm like country or common culture, wouldn’t they be better served living out of the UN building’s restrooms with a post office box anywhere? I presume you and your co-internationalists find little comfort in a common culture, language or heritage. God knows we would never want to lean on you to vote, pledge an allegiance or, if ever needed, come to the common defense.
But, rabbit, I’m suspicious, why I’m not saying you are a twit yet, that your angst arises from the probable reality that you are still trapped at home with your parents and it’s all a big asking-too-much-of-you. (If you are over the age of 30, you are a major, unlikely to be salvaged, twit.)
Eeyore:
I recommend you read what I actually write, rather than (mis)presuming so much. I explicitly stated that I am patriotic. It says so right there at the beginning of my post.
I am just not offended by people who are not. I would not want the whole country to be that way, since it probably would not last long. By I also recognize that many great crimes have been performed in the name of patriotism, and so the existance of people who are resistant to patriotic fever is perhaps a good thing.
Belinduh is way smarter now that she’s a brunette…Oh yes,way smarter.
She wrote a book…I know it’s only 27 pages but it’s her first try and that’s longer than most people’s books.
It has real nice pictures of all those Liberal women who she needed…er…wanted to help her write the book.
And now she’s figured out that bugs can’t get in a tent if it has a screen on it.(Unless they come in when you do,but we wouldn’t want to confuse poor Belinduh)
So now she wants a screened tent for everyone in Africa so I guess that would be about a billion tents and of course Belinduh would like for the taxpayers of Canada to pay for these tents.
What she hasn’t figured out yet is how she can make the taxpayers pay up when she is only a lowly opposition backbencher.
Oh well,she’s real smart now so I’m sure she will come up with something.
mary T – when I grow up I want to be just like you. You are a lovely person. I mean that. I just want to say it.
