I am in a similar situation to Peter March, although I must say that I have trouble taking seriously any philosopher who is so profoundly contemptuous of all religion. But I digress. About a week ago I began putting up copies of the cartoon of Bomb-Head Muhammad, and after seeing them disappear, learned that a couple of �colleagues� had been removing them. Yesterday I put up two more, and on one of them wrote in red pen: �Every one who removes these cartoons is a traitor to freedom.� They were still there when I left yesterday. I also prepared a poster to carry with me to classes yesterday, just a standard piece of Bristol board. On it I wrote: �Stand up for Denmark, Professor March, UPEI Cadre [not knowing that the SU there was about to go wobbly], and Freedom.� I carried it in the morning and had lunch in my office.
I had to look up “dhimmi”: learn something every day! And no thanks to dhimmiazation!
If they take away free speach, what’s next?
Prof Mullan and others like him (Kate) are showing courage: they are protecting a bedrock principle of the free world: “I may not agree with what you are saying, but I will fight and sacrifuce for your right to say it”.
BTW, the cartoons are not disrespectful to a religion: they only lampoon a vile form (a mutation of) Islam: we should all agree, across every culture, race and religion, etc… that suicide bombers and their ilk desecrate any religion.
Since the 60’s our universities and colleges have become concentration camps for the indoctrination of the leftist, pc and multi-culti creed. Our young are seldom exposed to any diversity of opinion.
Highes education should be a level playing field supporting a marketplace of ideas where one can arrive at their own conclusions.
I salute David Mullen. The pathetic attempt at censoring by removing his posters by his colleagues pretty much sums up the hypocrisy and rot on most campuses.
Demanding diversity of opinions and free speech on campuses is something that all of us need to fight for. David Horowitz has been leadng the fight on this.
Penny: Indeed: the 60s radical students (idle children of prosperity and surplus) became the professors. Students now pay (and not enough in a publicly subsidized system) to be taught WHAT to think never HOW to think. The WSJ had a disturbing article recently on how poor were the basic everyday life skills of today’s college grads. What jumped out at me was these kid’s don’t have the critical reasoning skills to analyze a newspaper editorial. Scary.

Penny; Right on. Indoctrination is started in grade school. A few years back, Abbotsford started a “traditional school”, over the vociferous objections of the BCTF. Parents lined up overnight to enroll their kids. The next year, after everyone had found out how harmful and just generally bad this school was, parents camped out in front of the school, in campers and Winnebagos, a week before registration. One local teacher opined that if parents were allowed to choose the school, half the enrollment of public schools would leave for other choices.It was a major story on BCTV Newshour. We parents have to lobby our governments hard, for a voucher system, so the parent can choose where and how they want their kids educated.In B.C. it seems neither major political Party is interested in discussing alternatives to the current education system. The NDP owes too much to the BCTF, and the Liberals just don’t seem to give a damn. I had to put my kids in public school, but encouraged them to question, respectfully, something that didn’t ring true. Their battles with leftist teachers was legendary in several of the schools they attended. We also found quite a few really good, common sense teachers, who quietly teach the kids to think, not how to think, and encourage open debate. They have to do this quietly, under the radar of the mainstream leftists who run the system here. These teachers lead by good example, and my kids still keep in touch with them years after graduating. We’ve been discussing, on other threads on SDA, reasons why moderate Islamics don’t speak out publicly against the radical elements of Islam. Same reasons the “Mr.Chip” of the teaching profession don’t speak publicly against their leftist federation. And the Islamics also have the fear of violent retaliation. Neo: any group that stays in power too long and unchecked will crush dissent, the radical Islamics just haven’t learned subtlety. Great. At least this enemy of freedom is easy to recognise, creeping Communism is a lot more enticimg, and harder to combat.

After the editor refused to hand over all remaining copies to the campus police, the SU advised that their lawyer said they could call the real city police to get them back. The editor surrendered.
The Student Union asserted its ownership rights over the paper. But, the SU is funded by mandatory student fees and is supposed to represent the students. It’s threatening to use force to keep the student newspaper out of the hands of the actual students it’s supposed to represent, and who own the paper!

Cynical thinking ‘skills’ as opposed to critical thinking skills are what passes for education at most of today’s Universities.
It’s so nice and easy – cynical thinking skills can be applied to any organization that humans create and the bigger or closer the organization is to us here in Canada, the more and easier it is to criticize.
A lot of wonky Profs today will deftly apply their cynical ‘thinking’ skills to the RC Church or the Bush administration etc. etc. But would they apply the same ‘skills’ to Islam? Arab governments? No.
