  1. Ann Coulter:
“The need for a union comes down to this question: Do you have a boss who wants you to work harder for less money? In the private sector, the answer is yes. In the public sector, the answer is a big, fat NO.
“Government unions have nothing in common with private sector unions because they don’t have hostile management on the other side of the bargaining table. To the contrary, the “bosses” of government employees are co-conspirators with them in bilking the taxpayers.
“Far from being careful stewards of the taxpayers’ money, politicians are on the same side of the bargaining table as government employees — against the taxpayers, who aren’t allowed to be part of the negotiation. This is why the head of New York’s largest public union in the mid-’70s, Victor Gotbaum, gloated, ‘We have the ability to elect our own boss.'”
    The whole thing here.

    More here.

  5. Revant: the ogallalla has been running dry for about sixty or seventy years now. It is a non-replenishing aquifer of enormous size. It is not an agricultural disaster as it has been a known issue for about as long as it a has been discovered. it was good while it lasted. Growers will now have to adapt.

  6. AccuWeather.com Spring 2011 Forecast for Canada
According to AccuWeather.com Agricultural Meteorologist Dale Mohler, the colder- and wetter-than-normal conditions predicted for the Canadian Prairies will likely cause the spring planting season to get off to a slow start, especially in Alberta and Saskatchewan.
Mohler explained that the same thing happened in the Prairies last year with a cold, wet spring that continued into summer. “There were pretty big losses there last year,” he said.
The situation this year may improve sooner than last year, Mohler said, but there will still be impacts.
Cold weather will allow snow to stay on the ground longer and inhibit the soil from reaching temperatures suitable for planting. Wet soil will also prevent farmers from getting into the fields.
Despite a slow start, Mohler said that the above-normal precipitation may be beneficial to crops on the Prairies in the long run.

Moving on from the endless and unresolved speculation over “if” the opposition will defeat the government, Parliament Hill is now abuzz over “how.”
It’s alomost subliminal. Don’t it make you want to run out and grab a gun and…..pull the trigger and take down the tories…

I might disagree about working harder though, as I prefer to work smarter (even though the term has become a cliche).
We’re getting to the stage where “expert systems” (software) monitored by “experts” can replace many white-collar jobs in legitimate industry and also government.

Eminent historian Paul Johnson on Sarah Palin, the tea party, and ‘baddies’ from Napoleon to Gadhafi.
In his best-selling history of the 20th century, “Modern Times,” British historian Paul Johnson describes “a significant turning-point in American history: the first time the Great Republic, the richest nation on earth, came up against the limits of its financial resources.” Until the 1960s, he writes in a chapter titled “America’s Suicide Attempt,” “public finance was run in all essentials on conventional lines”—that is to say, with budgets more or less in balance outside of exceptional circumstances.
“The big change in principle came under Kennedy,” Mr. Johnson writes. “In the autumn of 1962 the Administration committed itself to a new and radical principle of creating budgetary deficits even when there was no economic emergency.” Removing this constraint on government spending allowed Kennedy to introduce “a new concept of ‘big government’: the ‘problem-eliminator.’ Every area of human misery could be classified as a ‘problem’; then the Federal government could be armed to ‘eliminate’ it.”
Twenty-eight years after “Modern Times” first appeared, Mr. Johnson is perhaps the most eminent living British historian, and big government as problem-eliminator is back with a vengeance—along with trillion-dollar deficits as far as the eye can see. I visited the 82-year-old Mr. Johnson in his West London home this week to ask him whether America has once again set off down the path to self-destruction. Is he worried about America’s future?
“Of course I worry about America,” he says. “The whole world depends on America ultimately, particularly Britain. And also, I love America—a marvelous country. The real scandal is the Itchy&Scratchy Show between the leftist Pussy-Wussy Cats, namely TommyNDP and ScottyLiberal. The result? The Cat Scratch Itch.

“The rumour mill is on overdrive on this,” he said. “We’re waiting for the Speaker’s ruling. We’ll determine then what steps are appropriate after that.”
    Wussy:

    “Epstein: Portland Going Nowhere
Last October, Portland, Oregon, played host to an event immodestly called “Rail-Volution.” Portland is widely touted as a public transportation mecca and model “green” city, and more than a thousand public transport enthusiasts descended on this burg of about 580,000 to gush and gawk at the sights. When they weren’t riding demo trips on the light rail, they attended seminars with names like “Bikeways and Green Streets,” “High-Speed-Rail and Development Paradigm Shifts,” and “Sustainable Communities for the New Economy.” Portland’s mayor presided over one of the seminars, and Earl Blumenauer, the left-wing congressman who represents Portland’s east side, was a featured speaker. The event, one local wag noted, had the air of a religious revival.
Yet even the most zealous Jacobins of the Rail-Volution would have been hard-pressed to ignore the protest that occurred just outside its doors as the seminars were under way. More than 200 employees of TriMet, Portland’s public transit agency, picketed the event, protesting proposed changes to their health care plan.
Like many public transport agencies nationwide, TriMet is in a deep financial hole. For its current fiscal year, TriMet is facing a $27 million deficit, and there is no relief in sight. As the rail-volutionaries celebrated in the face of financial catastrophe, it was hard not to think of an old story about fires and fiddles.

  13. IT’S OFFICIAL: THE ANGLICAN CHURCH OF CANADA IS CERTIFIABLY CRAZY
Charles Lewis at the National Post, March 8, 2011:
“Good hosts [great pun!]: Anglicans mull communion for all
“Canadian Anglicans will hold discussions this spring about whether baptism is necessary for taking part in communion – questioning a requirement of Christianity that has existed for 2,000 years.
“‘Official teaching is you have to be baptized first. But a number of clergy across the country feel strongly about this as an issue and many have approached their bishops about allowing for an ‘open table’ in which all could take communion,’ said Archdeacon Paul Feheley, who is the principal secretary to Archbishop Fred Hiltz, head of the Anglican Church of Canada. . . .
“Rev. Gary Nicolosi said that if Jesus did not discriminate about who he invited to his table, then the Church should follow his lead.
“‘How, in our multicultural and pluralistic society, can our churches be places of hospitality if we exclude table fellowship with the non-baptized? This is not an academic question,’ wrote Rev. Nicolosi, the pastor at St. James Westminster Anglican Church in London, Ont., and an official Church consultant on how to build membership.
“‘How can the church effectively minister in a post-Christian world where a significant percentage of the population is not baptized? Some Anglican churches are attempting to meet this challenge by becoming open and inclusive faith communities, ready and willing to support people in their spiritual journeys.’ . . .
“Many who come to church do not feel welcome because they are not able to fully participate’, he said. It is akin, he added, to inviting someone for Sunday dinner and not feeding them a meal. . . .
“Rev. Ephraim Radner, professor of historical theology at Wycliffe College, an Anglican seminary in Toronto, rejects the idea that changing 2,000 years of tradition will make the Anglican Church stronger.
“‘The Eucharist isn’t a welcoming exercise,’ he said. ‘It is about Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. It’s not a meal like any other meal.’ . . .”
“Rev. Murray Henderson, an Anglican minister in Toronto, said these kinds of overtures represent ‘a failure of nerve’ to put the faith first.
“He said it is true that Jesus welcomed everyone to his table but since Christ’s death and resurrection that welcome now comes in the form of following Jesus through baptism.
“‘We need to have the courage to convert people to Christ, to have some discipline, and then we can invite people to the communion table. It’s not about a lack of hospitality, but asking people to first make a commitment to Jesus.’”

Apparently, Gary Nicolosi’s a trained lawyer—and, apparently, an idiot, to boot. He’s definitely a hypocrite as well. Inclusion? Nicolosi: “Some Anglican churches are attempting to meet this challenge [of welcoming one and all] by becoming open and inclusive faith communities, ready and willing to support people in their spiritual journeys.”
The Anglican Church of Canada, open and inclusive? He’s got to be kidding! I left the Anglican Church many years ago because of the kind of arrogance and exclusion he and his ilk have practised for decades, as they’ve secularized, feminized, and sexualized the Church: “Observant Christians Not Welcome” has been the Anglican Church’s unspoken, but official, policy for decades. I left because, as an orthodox Christian, I most definitely was NOT welcome.
The Reverend Nicolosi is altogether deluded if i) he thinks his brand of Anglicanism is open and inclusive, and ii) if he thinks that the further dumbing down of the faith is going to bring more people to church. Perhaps he and his buddies might actually try preaching the Gospel.

  14. If the queue jumper at DFW was driving a Toyota then he might have an out, provided he has a good lawyer of course.

  15. P.S. The Rev. Nicolosi: “How, in our multicultural and pluralistic society, can our churches be places of hospitality if we exclude table fellowship with the non-baptized?”
What tripe! Churches welcome all kinds of people all the time–for meals and even to sleep over: check out Christian “Out of the Cold/Heat” programs, open to one and all.
The Anglican secularists dissemble all the time.
    Kyrie eleison.

  16. James O’Keefe’s at it again! Check this out at The Daily Caller:
“NPR executives caught on tape bashing conservatives and Tea Party, touting liberals
“A man who appears to be a National Public Radio senior executive, Ron Schiller [not related to Vivian Schiller], has been captured on camera savaging conservatives and the Tea Party movement.
“‘The current Republican Party, particularly the Tea Party, is fanatically involved in people’s personal lives and very fundamental Christian – I wouldn’t even call it Christian. It’s this weird evangelical kind of move,’ declared Schiller, the head of NPR’s nonprofit foundation, who last week announced his departure for the Aspen Institute.
“In a new video released Tuesday morning by conservative filmmaker James O’Keefe, Schiller and Betsy Liley, NPR’s director of institutional giving, are seen meeting with two men who, unbeknownst to the NPR executives, are posing as members of a Muslim Brotherhood front group. The men, who identified themselves as Ibrahim Kasaam and Amir Malik from the fictitious Muslim Education Action Center (MEAC) Trust, met with Schiller and Liley at Café Milano, a well-known Georgetown restaurant, and explained their desire to give up to $5 million to NPR because, ‘the Zionist coverage is quite substantial elsewhere.’
“On the tapes, Schiller wastes little time before attacking conservatives. The Republican Party, Schiller says, has been ‘hijacked by this group.’ The man posing as Malik finishes the sentence by adding, ‘the radical, racist, Islamaphobic, Tea Party people.’ Schiller agrees and intensifies the criticism, saying that the Tea Party people aren’t ‘just Islamaphobic, but really xenophobic, I mean basically they are, they believe in sort of white, middle-America gun-toting. I mean, it’s scary. They’re seriously racist, racist people.’”

“Dem Sen. Joe Manchin: Obama has “failed to lead” on spending”
“Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia took to the Senate floor Tuesday morning to criticize President Obama for a failure of leadership in the effort to deal with the deficit and debt.
Manchin deemed the two budget proposals expected to be considered Tuesday – a Democratic plan containing $6.5 billion in new cuts and a Republican plan to cut about $60 billion – flawed. The former, he said, “doesn’t go nearly far enough” to address the nation’s fiscal woes, while the latter “blindly hacks the budget with no sense of our priorities or of our values as a country.”
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is bringing both proposals up for a vote even though neither is expected to pass; he says he wants to get the votes on the record and show that compromise is necessary. Manchin denounced the strategy as “political theater,” asking, “why are we voting on partisan proposals that we know will fail, that we know don’t balance our nation’s priorities with the need to get our fiscal house in order?”
Manchin, who is facing a tough reelection campaign in 2012, then went after the president.
“Why are we doing all this when the most powerful person in these negotiations – our president – has failed to lead this debate or offer a serious proposal for spending and cuts that he would be willing to fight for?” asked Manchin. “How does that make sense?”
He went on to say that “this debate will be decided when the president leads these tough negotiations. And, right now that’s not happening.””
