Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation, here are Del Porter, Marshall Smith, Ray Johnson, & Dwight Snyder, as the Foursome, performing There’ll Be Some Changes Made and When the Midnight Choo Choo Leaves for Alabam’ ¤ in 1937 (5:17). The Foursome toured with Glenn Miller and recorded with Bing Crosby & Dick Powell, and were often backed on drums by a young Spike Milligan (which helps explain some of the visual items in the montage accompanying this audio).

  1. My favorite music on SDA LNR is always the early 20th century time period. Despite the real hardship of those times, the music always seems optimistic and lighthearted. Maybe it’s the contrast between that attitude and the constant doom and gloom of today’s culture and music.

  4. Thanks Vit!! I was a friend’s place the other day. He’s a retired tech who worked at CBC when that 78 RPM Decca was still a reality! I wasn’t aware that there were records where the arm was placed on the inside of the record, and the grooves were turned so the arm worked it’s way towards the outside of the record.
    Other records were made of aluminum, coated with vinyl.

  10. Here’s an interesting outline of what Canada has developed on indigeneous reserves, where
    “This week, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) reported that Chief Harry Sharphead of the Enoch Cree First Nation in Alberta — a community whose on- and off-reserve populations totals about 2,000 — earns $180,000 per year… As aboriginal Canadians are exempt from tax for their on-reserve labour, Mr. Sharphead earned the equivalent of $274,000 a year…
    Meanwhile, Ed Stelmach, the Premier of Alberta (whose population is roughly 2,000 times that of the Enoch Cree First Nation) took home just $214,000 a year — on which he pays taxes.
    But there’s more. Of 14 Enoch Cree council members, all but two had annual incomes over $75,000 in 2006-07, the year referenced by the band documents cited by the CTF. The three top-earning councillors pulled in $178,000, $177,000 and $155,000, tax-free, respectively. Together, the council and chief pocketed $1.7-million a year, while 46 other “senior staff” raked in $3.3-million, for a total of $5-million in remuneration.
    According to documents publicly available on the website of the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs (DIAND), that same year, the Enoch Cree band spent just under $11.5-million in federal funding on everything else for its on-reserve population of 1,100 people (as per the 2001 census). That includes health, education, as well as $219,000 for “band employee benefits.”
    In 2001, average income for the 735 persons over 15 years of age on the Enoch Cree reserve was a mere $12,770. Only 430 of these persons actually earned employment wages, with an average annual salary of just over $16,000. This suggests that almost the entire population subsists at or below the poverty line — save for the band council and senior staff.”

    That’s Canadian taxpayer money going to fund 15 ‘senior management’ and 46 ‘other management’ for 5 million from the taxpayer…to ‘manage’ about 2,000 people. This size population is similar to the number in a large condo complex that off the reserve, requires about 25 people (management, security, accounts, cleaning, maintenance). Then, the taxpayer provides another 11.5 million to fund these 2,000 people, the majority of whom don’t work.
    Are taxpayers being scammed?

  12. Yeah ET but to be fair the previous Chief Ron Morin was, at one point, paying himself $327,712 out of band funds, which — because on-reserve incomes are tax exempt — was roughly the equivalent to a $515,000 income off reserve.
    The current chief Mr. Sharphead has cut that twice now, most recently in November when, in a letter to the Enoch Cree finance manager, he said he would take only $180,000 a year.
    So it wont be long before the band is financially stable and will stop taking money from Canadian taxpayers….as if that will happen.

    The American Constitution is being discredited by referring to it as a “Living Document”. From Wikipedia: A living document or dynamic document is a document which may be continually edited and updated by either a limited or unrestricted group. A simple example of a living document is an article in Wikipedia, in contrast to “dead” or “static” documents, such as an article in a single edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica…The United States Constitution is sometimes controversially considered a living document as, in non-Originalist jurisprudence, it can be reinterpreted and updated endlessly by judges without actual amendment; see right to privacy and living Constitution.

    Uh-huh, it’s pc Canadians fault. I suppose that Section 13 of the Human Rights Act and pushing diversity at every level of government and public schools has nothing to do with it. As the law now stands, any Canadian who is not part of a protected group could be dragged through years of punishment at the hands of the HRC for any slight criticism of a protected group, especially in UJ’s home province of BC. A citizen questioning any part of the diversity agenda would be instantly accused of racism. It’s government that created and forced us to adopt this pc, multicult monster.

  15. To shed a bit more light on the Enoch situation: The band is sitting on a large pool of oil to which they own the mineral rights. There are a lot of oil wells on the reserve. The reserve is also on some very rich farmland and the band makes good use of said land using modern farming techniques and equipment. The band runs quite a few businesses and of course now have the biggest casino in the Edmonton area. In other words I’m not sure how much taxpayers money is actually going to the chief and council and how much of their payment is generated from on reserve activity.

Less than 24 hours after he left the country, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to scold him for having embarrassed the vice president and the Obama administration, and delivered a list of concessions and demands Israel was expected to fulfill in response. Other Obama officials followed with statements of criticism of their own.
