  1. The sound of settled science: Northernmost Lake shows signs of global warming
    http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/09/070926111530.htm
“In an article to be published in the September 28 edition of Geophysical Research Letters, the international research team led by Université Laval scientists Warwick Vincent and Reinhard Pienitz reports that aquatic life in Ward Hunt Lake, a body of water located on a small island north of Ellesmere Island in the Canadian Arctic, has undergone major transformations within the last two centuries.
The speed and range of these transformations–unprecedented in the lake’s last 8,000 years–suggest that climate change related to human activity could be at the source of this phenomenon.”

    The cost of Kyoto
More news emerged this week that meeting Canada’s Kyoto-mandated carbon emissions targets would cripple our economy.
While complaining that the federal government was overestimating the emissions reductions its own made-in-Canada greenhouse gas plan will produce, the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy (NRTEE) admitted that the cost of meeting our Kyoto targets would be “considerable” if Ottawa attempted to achieve them by 2012 — the year the treaty expires. Meanwhile, Statistics Canada reported on Wednesday that almost all of our increased carbon emissions since 1990 was due to the increased production of exports. And since exports drive our prosperity and standard of living, the conclusion was inescapable: In order to reduce our greenhouse emissions, Canada would have to curtail its exports significantly, a move that would cost hundreds of thousands of jobs and make most Canadians poorer. …-

  6. Are any questions ever asked…simple questions like how efficient is the cost of heating this (ugly) place?
Check out Steve Janke’s info on where our health care premium (the so-called non-tax) was spent in beautiful downtown Tranna, COTU.

  7. TC….been there also. Some of the best Arctic Char fishing going. Oh.And Steve.Guess what? I have a piece of petrified wood that I found just outside Eureka! Guess GWBush planted it there!

  8. Sharia Banks -Sharia Law.
how could you shake hands on a deal when most bankers would have one hand cut off already?

  9. Anybody keeping tabs on the situation in Burma, or have we decided to bypass that completely?
It’s hardly shocking to us, of course, but it’s still appalling how amazingly useless the United Nations is. Wasn’t it created for situations exactly like this?

  10. Sharia bulls#$%. There should never be any law with the word “sharia” written into it in this country. It stands for the mutilation and degradation of women, period, end of story. If anyone wants anything to do with sharia, pack your bags and head back to the cesspool you came from.

  12. For what it’s worth here is my prediction if a fall election is held:
Conservatives GAIN enough seats for a majority
    NDP also GAINS
Greens will elect their first member
Both the Liberals and Bloc wiil LOSE seats
I sent this prediction to the four current leaders of their parties in Parliament. The Liberals responded with a typical auto reply.
What does everyone think of these predictions or “guesses?”

  13. Dan, completely agree with everything except for the Greens electing an MP part. Could you tell me which riding you think will go Green?

  14. Remember the Canadian media pushing the story that last months credit crunch fiasco was a US made problem ??
[Canadian banks are struggling to contain a credit crisis that could spiral out of control here more than it has elsewhere because of a lax regulatory regime, sources have told the National Post.] Nat Post
[The crisis relates to the market for a complex type of short-term funding known as asset backed commercial paper (ABCP), which had grown out of proportion in this country partly thanks to Canadian rules that were not as tough as in other nations.] Nat Post
[HOW IT WORKS – A bank packages a collection of mortgages, credit card balances, or lines of credit into an ABCP that matures in 30 days. – The bank sells ABCP for a fee to an intermediary that assumes all the risk associated with the underlying assets. – The intermediary sells pieces of the ABCP to investors, including pension funds or corporations or individuals. – Investors are paid interest and assume there will be a buyer for their piece of the ABCP after 30 days. – For a fee, the bank supplies funds to buy the ABCP if there are no other buyers – in Canada, this feature did not work in August when investors could not find a buyer.]

  15. Hi Eugene
I took a quick look at the 2006 results in the province to the “left” of us and in West Vancouver-Garibaldi and Powell River Sunshine, the “Greens” garnered about 25% of the vote. They may do better because of May.

  16. May really is inconsequential. Take a look at the Quebec by-elections and see where the green vote went.
Add in her recent hip replacement and see how mobile she will be during an election.
The more I see of her, the more annoying she gets. Federal politics already has Jack Layton for the annoying factor.
    enough

  17. There is a HUGE difference in “Green” brands.
The Suzuki/May Green is nothing compared to the quality of a Patrick Moore Green. Comparing rotten apples to apples.

  18. Bluetech
You must have gotten that news from a source other than “Canada’s National Broadcaster” because CBCPravda has NOTHING relating to it whatsoever! I read it on CTV and confirmed it on the G&M websites.

  19. Rosie O’:
On one episode of “The View,” O’Donnell urged Americans not to fear so-called terrorists, calling them mothers and fathers.
“Faith or fear, that’s your choice,” she said. “You can walk through life believing in the goodness of the world, or walk through life afraid of anyone who thinks different than you and trying to convert them to your way of thinking.”
“Don’t fear the terrorists. They’re mothers and fathers,” stated O’Donnell.

  20. PM Harper & Finance Mininster just announced $$14 Billion surplus.
Interesting note C-News is stating that the PM left abruptly after the annoucement & has left the finance minister to field questions.
Do you think the G&M,Star will have a field day with that one and of course the we have the typical on the comments section Re:Surplus at the G&M. The Surplus is thanks to the fine work of former PM & finance Minister Martin,(Ya right).

  21. Stephen Harper in October 2004, when Ralph Goodale announced a larger-than-expected surplus:
“These guys were lying about the surplus, and this proves why we need independent fiscal forecasts,” said Conservative Leader Stephen Harper.
If the Liberals were lying in 2004, what have the Conservatives been doing in 2007?

  22. According to the governments of the United States and Canada, the ‘resistance group,’ known as the ‘National Council of Resistance of Iran’ is a terrorist organization.
I wonder why the Jerusalem Post refers to them as a ‘resistance group’ and an ‘opposition group.’

  23. The economic announcement from Ottawa was put on the newswires by CP ….. CBC requires time to figure out how they can spin it as liberal success and/or Conservative under achievement….
I don’t believe that either Harper claims credit for this …. but assures that the benefits will be passed on to taxpayers!
Guaranteed to make Leftard heads explode! 🙂

  26. C-News via National Newswatch is reporting that the “Grits Have Leased a WarRoom” they have cars rented every thing in the ready to go mode in case of a fall election.
The Question is, the Liberals have money for a War Room, Yet the Quebec Ring says it needs $250Million by weeks end or its doors will close & staff will not be paid.
So where is the money coming from to be in standby if the Liberals are so cash strapped, Last spring they could not even Lease a Plane, & the Quebec wing is pleading for money.
Have they found the missing monies?

    Knocking Kyoto off its perch
    Peter Foster, Financial Post
    Published: Thursday, September 27, 2007
Prime Minister Stephen Harper is being roundly criticized by the usual suspects — political opponents, radical environmentalists and Olympian editorialists — for committing to join the “anti-Kyoto” Asia-Pacific Partnership. But for Canada to continue to embrace Kyoto is like a swimmer embracing lead weights.
In his speech on Monday at the United Nations, as part of a desperate “High Level” shindig to keep the moribund Kyoto process nailed to its perch, he didn’t even mention the “K” word. Instead, he said that there was “an emerging consensus on the need for a new, effective and flexible climate change framework.” In other words, Anything But Kyoto.
Kyoto is an abject failure. Its signatories do not include the United States. It does not substantially address the fastest-growing emitters, China and India. And its mechanisms — primarily emissions trading — are in disarray. So Canada is set to join the United States, China and India, along with Australia, Japan and Korea, in the Partnership created last year to deal with “Clean Development and Climate.” Today and tomorrow Environment Minister John Baird will attend a meeting of the Asia-Pacific partners, and nine other countries, hosted by President George W. Bush in Washington. Canada will becme a full member next month at a meeting in New Delhi.
The central nonsense of Kyoto has always been the radical disconnect between its draconian political ambitions, its economic costs and its predicted climate results. It cannot be stressed enough that the protocol, even if all the signatories had met their targets, would have produced a minuscule impact on global temperatures by the year 2100, along with a totally unpredictable impact on climate. Kyoto was only ever designed to be one, tiny step in a series of more and more draconian measures that would literally have covered the world with a thick layer of bureaucratic edict. All to address a problem that is still far from clearly understood. …-

  28. Health conscious terrorists enjoy life on Canada’s left coast.
“The photo taken at an organic herb farm in D’Arcy, B.C., shows three Spanish men and their wives relaxing in a garden on plastic lawn chairs, their coffee mugs perched on a round patio table.
It looks unexceptional, but it isn’t. When the RCMP found the snapshot during a recent raid in Vancouver, they identified the men as Ivan Apaolaza Sancho, Victor Tejedor Bilbao and Mario Ines Torres — all wanted terrorists.

  30. Re:Shari’a banking
Since charging or receiving interest is forbidden in Islam they have developed interesting sleight of hand techniques to avoid dealing with “interest”.
Need money to buy $50,000 car? The bank will buy the car and sell it to you for $55,000 and you repay this amount over a set period of time. The bank retains ownership until payment is complete. The $5000.00 to the bank is considered a legitimate service charge.
Their understanding of and importance of “truth” is quite different from Northern European based cultures.
