Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Pretty good, gutsy fellow, like that guy in Ontario that killed the black bear earlier this year, also with a long handled hunting knife. Lesson: if you’re going to carry a knife, make sure it has a long blade.
I was born and raised in northern Manitoba, and was raised on the belief that wild animals can be dangerous. When I walk through bear country, I carry a .444 Marlin with 265 grain slugs. makes me feel safer.
Every once in a while, I run into city dwelling hikers who chastise me for carrying a firearm, though it’s perfectly legal, as I guess they’re worried that, in a confrontation with a wild animal, the animal might lose.
btw, a real man would have negotiated his way out of the situation.
dmorris It is too bad that this fellow didn’t have time to contact Telaban Jack Layton to do the negotiation for him . Jack will likley want this guy charged with animal cruelty or some such thing.

clubing a bear to death with that thing would be slow and crule
“McLellan had driven out to the field down Secondary Highway 666”
Guess that road leads to “the mark of the beast” 😉
Sorry!
I empathize with this guy…I have been stalked by a Grizzly while packing meat out of the bush. Even with a .444 marlin in the saddle scabbard I felt unarmed and vulnerable. I often wondered what I’d do if the bear soaked up my first shots and charged and knocked my rifle loose…wondered what a 6 inch Kershaw hunting blade would do as a defense….guess this guy found out the hard way…I bet he’s glad he had a hunting blade twice the normal size because there is about 3 inches of fat and hide on a Grizz before you cut any meat.
I’m glad he was able to walk away from it. I wonder if the ministry will let him keep the bear hide?
Gym, the marlin is to shoot myself with, if negotiations fail.
We carried a 12 ga with slugs and buckshot when doing some fishing and work in the NWT. It’s comforting to have something that goes BOOM! when in bear country.
That lad was pretty lucky. And kinda dumb… going into bear country with only a knife. .444 Marlin is good to carry, but I prefer a 12 gauge myself unless I’m actually hunting. Friend of mine who grew up guiding in upper B.C. recommends a short barrel 12 loaded with buck, slug, slug, buck, and buck. I guess that’s what Stan had, eh?
What I prefer to have when I’m hunting bear is … backup! Usually my wife with her Marlin 30.30. Hand loaded 170 grain bullet will knock down a bear just fine if a wounded bear knocks me down and starts chewing on my rifle…
BTW, I make sure to remember birthdays and anniversary’s. And I never ever tell the truth when she asks if the dress makes her look fat..!
So a dimwitted man kills a single mother who has three children. Why did that bear attack? Poverty. Killing an innocent beast that is trying to feed and protect her family? Shame, shame. Those cubs will be in therapy for a long time.
…things you see without a bazooka.
And the enviromentalists wackos will want this guy sent to jail for killing the bear FEED THE ECO-WACKOS TO THE BEARS
…what’s all that squawking noise I hear in here?
😉
Its me we spurwing plovers get noieie when envromentalists wackos come near our nests
