Why haven’t they learned? Arrogance? Stupidity?
Political upstart assemblyman Zohran Mamdani stunned the political world last month with an upset defeat of former governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary. What was even more stunning, however, was that Cuomo made every major mistake in his mayoral campaign that Kamala Harris did in her presidential campaign. He clearly did not learn a single lesson from the presidential race of only eight months ago, and as a result he lost, 56 percent to 44 percent, to Mamdani.
I wrote prior to Kamala Harris’ formal anointment as the Democratic presidential candidate that the then-vice president was the weakest candidate Democrats could have chosen. I believed, up until now, that if any of the other major contenders (except for Joe Biden of course) had been nominated instead, they would not have run the failed campaign Harris did, and we as a nation would have been spared a second Trump presidency. However, after watching Andrew Cuomo lose, it occurred to me that I may have been very wrong to assume other major Democrats would not have made the significant unforced errors that cost Harris the election.
Why do I say that? Because there were a number of incredibly obvious lessons to learn from the Harris campaign’s failures, and yet a proven Democratic political figure like Cuomo clearly did not learn them.
Simple fact. It’s hard to persuade voters (which is what campaigning happens to be) about an issue if the one doing the persuasion has no passion (or understanding) of the particular issue. It’s, also, difficult for a candidate to persuade the voters if they are coming from a position (Vice President of the USA) that had four previous years to address the issue(s) on which they are trying to persuade. The “villain” in that scenario is, also, the candidate.
Also, Harris is functionally retarded and socially inept. She was the “perfect storm” of a poor option. But, she wasn’t chosen for her abilities. She was chosen to assure that the funds raised by the Biden administration would be transferred over to to replacement candidate.
Cuomo’s loss has nothing to do with Kamala Harris’s mistakes. It has everything to do with the idiocy and elitist virtue signaling of the constituency. Put a majority of kindergarteners in a room and have them vote on learning things or having an extended snack time. Guess which they choose.
Cuomo’s loss was due to new more liberal radicals taking over, plus a total mismanagement of COVID, and voters were tired of the family.
Democrats are socialists. As such they don’t care about the average Joe and Jane.
For example, Cuomo sending COVID patients into old folks homes.
Today’s Democrats spend more time insider trading than caring for the average citizen.
Leave it to a Newsweek reporter to entirely ignore the other two massive issues driving voter sentiment;
– Massive, unchecked, illegal immigration and the dissolution of our borders
– DEI/LGBTQueer insanity run amok.
Yes, it’s the economy, stupid! But those other two issues tie inexorably to the economy. Illegals working for cheap, taking away good paying jobs. DEI hires taking away merit based hiring. And EXTREME LGBTQueer pandering CANCELLING jobs of those who won’t “wear thee ribbion” or fly the rainbow flag.
Dems decimated their ranks when they passed Obamacare. The backlash took out an entire generation of Dems, certainly those from “moderate” areas. So when 2020 rolled around, the Dems only had old (75 years old) liberals from New England and West Coast. In other words, they had no one that could win. For a while it looked like Bernie was gonna get the nomination, but Dem leadership couldn’t have that, so they did their back room deals and boom! Joe was nominated.
So in 2024, they had the same problem — no one with a national stature beyond Joe. And I predicted a year ago, none were gonna do any better than Joe, even with Joe firing on half a brain. Certainly Kamala wasn’t gonna win, barring another “irregular” election like we had in 2020 (ahem).
So bottom line — Dems have a huge hole in their ranks about the age that would run for President, and none to the right of Stalin/Lenin/Bernie.
Yes! Esp. among the young who are now saddled with mandatory Obamakkare payments for shitty Bronze level care … or pay an income tax penalty.
When my kids were young adults, I had them purchase “Major Medical” policies that just covered catastrophic care. It was cheap, and was all the healthy kids needed. But Obama in his drive to make America Socialist now FORCES the young to PAY for all the elder care. So you young punks get to PAY for my Medicare!! Yeayyyy Obama!! Hope and Change !!! That’s all the young have in their purses … Hope and Change.
Not going to read an opinion of a fool who wanted Harris to win. I say who cares they’re making mistakes?, keep nominating people with more and more extreme policy positions. I don’t think Democrats are ever going to be in the game again until they take a real hard turn back to the center. Except in blue cities where elections are always rigged.
“Not going to read an opinion of a fool who wanted Harris to win.”
Or one who claims that Donald Trump was “vulnerable” on the issue of abortion, when in fact all he did was return control of it back to the individual states *where it always belonged*.
The democrat base is insane. Nationally the party is taking the 20 side of every 80/20 issue out there and as a result their approval level hovers in the teens, in a 2-party system. A significant portion of their base believes that their politicians need to do more to resist Trump, even to the point of risking personal injury. These people are unstable. When they congregate in large numbers you end up with winners like Zohran or that other freak running in Minnesota.
Wish the dems luck. If he loses the real radicals in the party are going to be pi**ed and they’ll double down on their efforts. If he wins he has 8 or 9 months to showcase his “socialism” before the midterms, making him excellent albatross material.
“Nationally the party is taking the 20 side of every 80/20 issue out there and as a result their approval level hovers in the teens, in a 2-party system. ”
I sometimes wish that Trump would troll the Democrats with a post opposing something, like lowering the age of consent to 14 years old, just to see if they would bite. 🙂
I can’t help but think that he is trolling them on Epstein. He’s got them squealing like stuck pigs. We’ll never get to see the whole thing but I wouldn’t be surprised to see some more revelations come out some time in the future.
“I can’t help but think that he is trolling them on Epstein. ”
Agreed. There will be information released, of course…but none of it earth-shattering.
I particularly enjoy the “Epstein was a Mossad agent”. Yeah, sure he was…because the most covert and professional intelligence agency in the world loves to hire international playboys who cavort around the world, flaunt their wealth with private jets, mansions and even a private island and very publicly invite politicians and Hollywood celebrities to come and party with them. The Mossad just loves that kind of attention, right?
I support the Dems current trajectory, hopefully it will continue until it turns into a death spiral. All of the Dems who tried to be in the center or at least center-left, got kicked to the curb. Experience is a good teacher, but a cruel one and I wish them all the experience they can get from their current dilemma.
Things are going to get worse for them, they’ve got their Actblue problem to deal with. A criminal conspiracy covering multiple States makes them a perfect target for RICO.
Nice political party you have there, too bad we’re going to shut it down.
Is this not a case of the Democrats moving left faster than the candidates can shift left to get their vote? Mamdani sits somewhere between Socialist and Communist so the vote is swinging right over to him.
I think it’s an indication of how radical the dem base has become and its growing influence over the party as a whole. It’s going to be interesting to see how they navigate their way through this without totally melting down.
What concerns me is that beginning with Obama, when faced with opposition, the Dems have lurched further and further left…and it hasn’t hurt them. Even Bubba Clinton loosely embraced supply side economic policies in his second term. Traditionally, a two-party system finds common middle ground. Not any more. I’m not convinced the Dems will learn or change a thing after the disaster Harris was. I expect them to launch even more lefty insanity and will be rewarded by their mindless base.
That and legal weed.
No one but hardcore political extremists vote in primaries.
Remember, these are the same people contending that firing all the police will result in peace love and coexistence.
