Liberal Leader Mark Carney says it’s not necessary to protect Canada’s supply management system through binding legislation.
The stance puts him at odds with his party’s position less than two years ago, when the vast majority of Liberal MPs voted for a bill that would have protected the supply-managed dairy, egg and poultry markets from future trade concessions.
May 30, 2025: Prime Minister Mark Carney yesterday endorsed a Bloc Québécois dairy bill opposed by free trade farmers as protectionist.

Carney is courting support from the Bloc now rather than the worn-out whining husk o f a Party they absorbed supporters from in the last parliament. Besides, Carney is more fascist than socialist so the Bloc is a slightly better fit.
Shrug. On the issue of supporting Supply Managment he’s got the entire House behind him.
That’s true. When it comes to the good old boys network of the Dairy Lobby, the Cons are captured.
“That’s true. When it comes to the good old boys network of the Dairy Lobby, the Cons are captured.”
Absolutely they are. The disgusting dairy cartel oligopoly hurts the poor the most (the middle class second), and all of our Canadian political parties *with the exception of one* turn a blind eye to it.
And why are they captured? A good election they win 15 seats, a bad one 10. A principled stand would win more votes in the ROC than they would lose in Quebec. We lost the referendums.

In a system of government based on patronage (aka constitutional monarchy) success is dependant on government largess and how many seats are at risk if the patronage is cut off.
Just another example of why Saskaberta has to flee the sinking ship of Kanaduh.
That argument is proceeding at a logarithmic pace, from if to when.
“What’s in it for quebek?” That’s the first question libranos ask on every issue. Carney is now just following the same path.
The CPC will do the same. Hopefully the MP’s from the west vote against this madness.
If quebek was a nation they wouldn’t propose anything this foolish as trade policy.
Far, far too many Canadian voters like being lied to, hoping somehow that spares them from reality.
One of the wisest and best comments I’ve ever read on this blog, and you nailed it – in spades.
Well played, Sir.
mhb23re
UR welcome.
All of Canada will thrive on an economy based on the nation’s greatest natural resource: butter.
Arrogant liar.
It will be very interesting to see how this business of courts intervening to stop Trump’s tariffs will play out. I understand that a higher court (than the made up one of demonrat appointees) has granted an injunction over the lower court ruling. If the Administration is successful in its appeal, watch out! I hope that the US demands immediate, full, and unfettered access to the Canadian dairy and poultry market and what the consequences will be if that access isn’t allowed. ELBOWS UP so Jacques can winter in Florida and his quota isn’t affected!
Trump already put the shot across the bow so to speak when he told Canada that to be part of the golden dome the Canada was for sale at the price of 61 billion.
Carney said the talks on participation were underway.
Why table a budget if the country is being annexed by the US?
Chris, Chris, Chris … some highly informed posters here have assured me that none of what you’ve heard about Canada’s protectionist rules governing Dairy products are true. Orangemanbad simply doesn’t understand the happy good time “nice” neighborly Canadian tariffs. There’s no need for reciprocal tariffs. All is well … except for Badmanorange.
Yes, I feel rather foolish. Apparently we need to have legislation to make inviolable protections that don’t exist.
The various cartel systems will remain in place to keep certain families protected from competition. So that they can continue to gouge Canadians.
“Supply management” is just a nice-sounding term for cartel, and it is why for decades those who could would cross the border to the US to get their eggs and dairy for a normal price.
But Canada also has a taxi cartel, poultry cartel, syrup cartel, and other controlled industries were a select few profit off of the many – the Canadian Wheat Board comes to mind.
None of these cartels would exist in a free market, and all Canadians would immediately benefit from prices instantly dropping by 50%+ as well as having choices in suppliers and options. Many would love to be able to buy real milk, rather than having most of the nutrients destroyed through the idiocy of pasteurization. It’d also be great to be able to buy non-homogenized milk.
But the reality is that Canada is instead a fake democracy, where the real game is fooling enough of the citizens into thinking that they’re free so that they don’t take up their pitchforks. Dividing them up, pitting the greedy, the un- and miseducated, and the imbeciles (NDP-types) against the rest.
Canadians taking up pitchforks, that made me laugh out loud. Canadians will only take up pitchforks against whatever group mommy government tells them to, how they tell them to, and when they tell them to. Pathetic sheeple. I’ll take things you’ll never see for $200 Alex, “Revolutionary Canadians opposing government with the support of citizens.”
“We are a free, sovereign and ambitious country. We are masters in our own home (unless/until Xi says differently).” fixed it for Carney.
CoffeyTimeNews on X: “Mark Carney just dropped the hammer on Trump. “Our old relationship of steadily deepening integration with the United States is over.” “We are a free, sovereign and ambitious country. We are masters in our own home.” That’s what I’m talking about. https://t.co/WPfRdzLiGv” / X

Non-homogenised milk is available. We buy 4.8% whole milk from a local dairy farm, we get a big plug of cream on the top – wonderful.
It is, of course, pasteurized sadly. I’ve been trying to get raw milk from farmers I know, but no luck so far.
You can add the guild socialism of all the “professions” to that list of cartels, and given all the labour legislation, unions as well.
Canada is indeed a fake democracy, I agree… but Canadians will never rebel against their rulers and they would never ever pick up pitchforks.
Canadians would commit suicide if the Liberals told them to… thats what cults do.
The CON…in confederation.
Dairy, egg, chicken, turkey farmers should be required by law to purchase all tractors, farm equipment, milking equipment, trucks, etc. from Canadian manufacturers who are in a supply management system who buy quota, limit supply and dictate price at cost of production plus . Fair is fair.
Cartel farmers who have a John Deere, New Holland, Fendt, Case IH are walking, breathing hypocrites.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Tractor_manufacturers_of_Canada
Uh huh. If a cartel member wants to buy new, it should by law be a Versatile at a price that the manufacturer sets for cartel purchase (Versatiles could be bought and sold to non-cartel members at other prices).
A shame about Massey Ferguson. Their tractors were quite decent. I have hands on experience with a 1959 202 and a 1964 180.
In the latest season 4 of Clarkson’s Farm … they’ve introduced a glamorous young woman farmer – Harriet Cowan, who rescues inept farmer Clarkson when Caleb is on a speaking tour. One of the first things she does is to bring her PROPER TRACTOR… a Massey Ferguson … to replace Clarkson’s inoperable fancy Lamborghini tractor.
Yeah … she clearly demonstrates why it is a Superior tractor and beats out a demo from virtually every tractor made in the world. Easiest to use. Most intuitive.
I didn’t know that MF was a Canadian product.
l used to commute st catharine to london passed the close MF plant time and again.
then one day it was gone.
took a college special course in mfg production mgmt.
instructor described how MF used taxicabs to get parts to/from diff locales.
they were ‘turning things around’ streamlining but too little too late
Shame. They made a kick ass tractor.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massey_Ferguson#/media/File:180501-M-Ferguson-8732-03.jpg
But sadly … Canada exported its tractor business to the ChiComs, Japan, and India. You know … the kind of hollowing out of your industry that Trump is trying to correct here in America.
Cockshutt? It got bought out by a US company for its dealer network and ceased manufacturing. Green Olivers were painted Cockshutt cream and became Cockshutts. That is just like about ten different Canadian semi manufacturers over the years.
Cockshutt? Well, thank you for asking, harrumph!
So he lied again. What’s so surprising? He is a world class boot licker.

Not only does the dairy cartel harm consumers by raising costs, it also harms farmers who are more efficient than their quota allows by forcing them to dump milk (~7% of the 10.2 billion litres produced in 2023/24), it prevents new businesses from appearing to make value add products from the milk for the benefit of companies like Agropur, Saputo and Lactantia.
We know the Liberals won’t do it, but maybe Trump can force them.
How Australia got rid of supply management:
https://www.iedm.org/1768-how-australia-got-out-of-supply-management-a-lesson-for-canada-milk-prices-fell-from-18-to-29/
If you want to see what supply management has done travel down any rural road in SW Ontario and count the number of un used livestock barns until you see one huge mega factory barn equipped with a proportionally large milk parlour
Hint there are no family farms anymore it’s all corporate now.
The head count of the total herd didn’t increase but the concentration sure did.
“Hint there are no family farms anymore it’s all corporate now.”
That’s one of the worst parts of this…they continue to try and sell us the tired old line about “not hurting small dairy farmers” by ending the ‘supply management’ system, when those farmers are long gone. It’s all about huge corporate profits now…
” it also harms farmers who are more efficient than their quota allows by forcing them to dump milk (~7% of the 10.2 billion litres produced in 2023/24)”
I heard years ago that they aren’t even allowed to give it away to food banks and/or charities….they have to destroy it.
What was that about weak men and hard times?
Max Carnage..to his friends.
Preston Manning might finally be right about something.
Western Canadians are citizens without a country.
Have been for decades.
I did not leave or betray Canada..My elected leaders sure did.
Seeking a civil society which rewards honest work and future planning..which Can Ahh Duh does not.
Central Planning,5 year plans and “Supply Management”..all visions of The Soviet..all great successes of Socialism.
All of the Party.
All for The Party.
Dear Leader has spoken.
Eastern and Urban Canadians just lapp this up.
I’d argue this is more Fascism than Socialism (yes that venn diagram overlaps), only because “socialism” is still acceptable to a majority of the population.
Some lapp it up. To others, it’s just a finn veneer…
Supply management dictates from Ottawa should simply be ignored.
Gosh.
Liberals Lie.
Captain Obvious has spoken.
In no particular order…
US trade hit list on trade deal (bilateral guaranteed)
Elimination of dairy/poultry supply management scam
Canadian access for US banking systems
Adjustment to mitigate GST/HST barrier on goods
Freedom of speech…end to government and tech censorhip
But then I am not an ‘expert’…
Just someone who pays attention
Regardless we are about to learn a lot of the real world when the USMCA is up for renewal…painful, idiotic behaviour like Freeland’s last time will be less tolerated this time
Carney is just another empty suit
But Canada has no tariffs against the USA!
No tarriffs at all. Nor limits to market access. Just like how a snowball will last much longer in hell if one calls the ball of ice a rock instead. Because names and labels are what define the properties of things.
all this confirms my overall opinion that Carnage is a total amateur in the legislative governmental process from the inside.
the flip flops the questionable edicts following the turdeau line making it worse.
cue the consultants did they send their cheque?
I know, but that just makes it better, this shithole will fail faster.
Carney can choose Quebec separating or Alberta separating.
Looks like he chose Alberta.
Why would K-bec separate?
The whole confederation is set-up to empower, enrich and protect them.
The fact that western dummies are still letting themselves get robbed is beyond belief.
Alberta won’t separate, they are
Canadianscowards first.Voters in this place don’t care, especially women voters. Tell them that dairy costs twice what it should and they will angrily reply “Trump”!
Seriously.
“Canadians” like to wallow in ignorance, it feels good to them, they will pay any price just to have that self righteous feeling that they’re better than everyone else. CBC news feeds them those feelings.
My hope is separatism for Alberta, destructiobn of the auto pac and the dairy cartel by Trump.
Carney couldnt manage a fart in a bottle.
