Today is Remembrance Day in Canada but in America, it’s known as Veterans Day. 8 years ago, Tulsi Gabbard spoke at a Veterans Day commemoration in Hawaii. Her words are even more profound today.

I went overseas in December of 1967 and didn’t return to the US until January 1971. 4 years in the US Army
was enough and that was my enlistment obligation.
Later the GI Bill paid my way through the University of Wisconsin for a B.S. followed by a MBA from Harvard Business School. I never paid a cent in tuition. The GI Bill means the country honors its veterans for their service.
We have a great country and our men and women need to volunteer for military service. I wish we were more like Israel where almost all have to serve their country. Essentially, as a veteran you realize you have “skin in the game.” That’s a very good thing.
John … I’m sorry to report that I am not one to say … “thank you for your service” to every Veteran, because it seems like a cheap and trite form of absolution. But when I hear your story, I can honestly, and with heartfelt feeling say … “Thank you for your service”. Esp. because you spent FOUR years in the pointless hellhole that was Nam. But more than that, for your obvious commitment to education, and I suspect a long productive career where your “other” talents provided great service to our Nation. Seriously. Thank you, for ALL your services. And may God Bless every year you have remaining on earth.
And yes … I wholeheartedly agree that ALL our young people should serve our country, and learn the lessons that can only be derived from service.
Indeed.
It would be comforting to know there maybe a battle hardened veteran out there somewhere when some old gal is getting robbed or worked over. Somebody that takes care of business.
Veterans deserve more than just one day of remembrance, so my poppy is on display in my truck 24/7/365.
Good on you, my friend. It’s quite sad that America doesn’t have a universal, iconic, expression of gratitude for our Veterans such as the Poppy. I literally grew up never knowing or hearing about The Poppy … until FIFA sought to BAN printing the Poppy on the uniforms of English Premiere League Soccer Teams. I don’t have polite words for people like those governing FIFA.

I ADORE your Poppy tradition.
