All that is directly related to energy price increases, inflation is the root cause of increased credit card use.

  2. I know this earns me a “You should fuck off now and avoid the rush” comment, but the “My Nazi High School Principal” item misses a slight note of incongruity with the overall horror of the Nazi regime. And no, I didn’t know the guy – I’ll take your word for it.

In general (there were exceptions of course, there always are), the kriegsmarine was the most upright and law-abiding of the three German services in WW2. This could stem from their having long traditions, but there are several examples – one in which they displayed the highest compassion and our side, not so much, would be the Laconia incident in 1942. In short, a u-boat torpedoed RMS Laconia and, discovering it was full of civilians and Italian prisoners-of-war, the skipper, Werner Hartenstein, set-about organizing a rescue. He broadcast on radio the position and called for help; other u-boats and an Italian submarine were directed to the spot to assist. Hartenstein had 200 survivors including 5 women in his sub, which was extremely crowded. The message he’d broadcast was initially dismissed as a ruse de guerre by the allies, but the Vichy French dispatched vessels to pick-up survivors.

Four subs (three u-boats and an Italian sub) assisted for two days, then an American Liberator, coming on the scene and reporting that the rescue was genuine, was nevertheless ordered to attack the subs. They dove and left the survivors in the water, and Doenitz subsequently ordered that no u-boat was to attempt a rescue of survivors in future, despite which some still did. This order of Doenitz’s, “the Laconia Order”, was brought in evidence against him at the Nuremberg trials, and backfired pretty badly against the prosecution when the Allies’ ordering attacks on the assisting u-boats was proven.

And one of my heroes is Admiral Wilhelm Canaris, who was influenced by Catholicism and Lutheranism; he turned against the regime after the invasion of Poland and was eventually hanged for treason in Flossenberg concentration camp in 1945. Reading about him illustrates the difference between “classical” and “utilitarian” theories of morality. Under the classical theory, some things are ALWAYS wrong no matter who is doing them and why; under the utilitarian theory, morality depends on a deed’s effect and therefore, poisoning residents of Minamata with mercury was okay because “What’s good for the Chisso Company is good for Japan”. There’s strong evidence that Obama, who was still President, was informed of Hiliary’s Russian-collusion plot against Trump; had he been a classicist he would’ve been motivated by honesty and respect for the law, and taken stern action against it, but instead he backed the “it’s good for us Democrats”. Canaris had strong principles of right and wrong, which led him to devote himself to undermining the Nazis to his subsequent cost.

Bottom line – it’s evident which morality is rampant at the moment.

    1. That was a very interesting story about Canaris. Unknown and forgotten, but moral and brave to the very end.

Thank you for that, Y. knott.

    2. I was unimpressed with the headline that declared him a Nazi, and the story that said there was “no word” on whether he was in fact, a Nazi party member. Credibility melted away at that point.

    3. Then there is the possibility that Canaris became an agent for the UK after he saw the result of the bombing of Guernica. Another thought about Canaris’ influence on the war was the evacuation of Dunkirk. The German government could not adequately feed and house 350,000 POWs and at the same time could not by the Geneva Convention massacre those stuck on the beach. Did Canaris have any sway in convincing the German High Command and Hitler in allowing the evacuation. Another point in Canaris’ favour is the landing at Anzio, did he mislead the German High Command there too? Some parts of history will never be known.

  3. Re: The carbon tax rebate scam.

“It simply isn’t credible to believe the feds can raise taxes, skim some off the top for administration costs and somehow make families better off,” said (Canadian Taxpayers Federation federal director Franco) Terrazanno.

Seriously, CTF? Yer only figgering this out now? When Blackie’s initial proposal hit the airwaves 8 years ago I already had this nailed.

    1. Hubby mailed a package out west that weighed 1 pound it cost 26 dollars to mail it-8 dollars for the carbon neutral tax that Trudy likes to champion for. So when you hear Canada post brag they are carbon neutral it’s because we pay outrages eco-fees so they can strut around like Jackals.

  4. Re the carbon tax story:

“In a press release, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) warned that the tax is hitting families harder than government rebates can compensate for.

CTF federal director Franco Terrazzano criticized the government, saying that its claims of rebates offsetting the cost of the tax don’t add up.

“The Parliamentary Budget Officer is clear: the carbon tax costs families hundreds of dollars more than the rebates they get back,” said Terrazzano.”
    ———————————————————

Right from the get-go the carbon tax can’t pay out as much as it takes in just due to administrative costs. And right from the start, the bureaucracy created to administer the rebates will metastasize and grow nearly as fast as the money it receives comes in.

Check back in another 5 years and see if any of the tax is being rebated. In 10 years, people will still be paying the tax but will have forgotten they were supposed to be getting it back as a rebate.

There will also come a point where the carbon tax will have to be raised a bit because it isn’t bringing in enough revenue to cover the cost of administering the program. Gotta pay all those sisters and cousins and aunts that were hired.

It should be obvious to anyone over the age of four that when the government takes a dollar out of your left pocket and promises to put a dollar back in your right pocket, some or none of that dollar never makes it to your right pocket. It never ever does. Every.Single.Time.

    1. Alas and alack, it should be obvious, but most Canadians can’t think logically, nor can they do simple math and budgeting… what is a budget?

    2. HR
Don’t forget, we have to pay GST (HST) on the carbon tax.

Of course this is rebated… to Liberal family members and Liberal consultants.
