Around ten years ago my son tried to join the forces. First off, I told him he didn’t want to be an infantryman or a naval hull technician because crawling through the mud and swabbing decks weren’t fun. There were endless lists of attractive jobs which he applied for but they were all bullshit. He had all university entrance courses and was more than qualified. He applied while he was unemployed but a couple months later got an Alberta oilpatch job that paid three times as much so he quit bidding for jobs. Six months later he was laid off and started again but a couple months later got another good job. The fools doing recruiting are beyond stupid. When you have a quality candidate you give him a job and wait for openings. If you keep someone nibbling on the hook for six months you will likely end up with the laziest most unambitious people available. Perhaps that’s why most of the armed forces are from Atlantic Canada. I guess they may be lazy but they certainly aren’t queer.
My son wanted to join a couple of years ago, but he let him know what the Canuck armed forces were all about.
He wanted to be a Seal, or such. Well, we had to pop that balloon, and tell him those were Americans. If he joined the Canuck forces, he would more likely be a pancake cook or sandbag filler, than a soldier.

I was told by a service member that when they were stationed in Haiti they also had to do patrols outside the wire with empty rifles. Safety first!

When I joined in 1974 it took about 2 months from initial interview and test to raise your right hand. Today, with all of our IT and technology it takes almost one year, I repeat, one year to progress from initial interview to an offer of acceptance. Way too long and way too woke. If you are a male or should I say a CIS person with a stick and you want to wear makeup and a dress then there is “no life like it.” Thank God for that.

The Canadian Forces has already discharged many soldiers, including the majority of their combat veterans for non-compliance with vaccine mandates. The folks who actually got shot at while being told they were defending liberty and democracy generally didn’t like the idea of their own state suppressing these values and imposing illiberal restrictions on human rights. They felt that it cheapened the sacrifice they had made, and tended to be among those who resisted the mandates.
As a result, the Canadian Forces has lost a significant portion of their corporate experience and capability when it comes to actual combat readiness. They’ve also turned off the sort of individuals who generally volunteer for unpleasant and dangerous work. All that’s left are the people looking for a leg up when getting recruited into the RCMP and other police forces. These are the sort of people who become REMFs and chain dogs for the MPs.

Years ago my brother was the CO of one of the recruitment centres. They were all called to a big meeting in Ottawa and during that meeting they were told that all who were applying would be taking the same aptitude tests…..but the “pass” mark for Francophones would be lower than that of Anglophones. When they asked why that was, the answer was “because of cultural differences”. My brother retired soon after.

When I was 22 I applied to the Canadian Armed Forces, officer candidate training program. I had to get references, RCMP background check, turn yer head and cough, whole nine yards.
Then they gave the group of us an IQ test. Two hours to do it, and I finished in twenty minutes. Because I did it so fast, they marked it right away.
I got the highest score ever recorded on the CAF OCTP IQ test.
And then I never heard from them again.
Father was a sgt(ret). When I talked to a recruiter he literally took me out to the barn for a ‘conversation’. Upshot was that while it was good for him, I could do better on civi street. I had a bad habit of thinking and that wouldn’t work out well. Ed above probably ran into the same problem. There is a type that will do well in the service and they were looking for someone to fit that slot, hope it worked out for you.
I know a young PPCLI soldier who said that on his basic training course were several navy stewards of the female variety who screwed up absolutely everything. He couldn’t believe they all passed. I told him the reason. If the captain never got his cocoa he’d throw a tantrum and start bitching that somebody stole his strawberries. Be a navy waitress for $60 grand a year and serve until they throw you out and get a good pension. It would beat slinging hash for minimum wage. It’s not like Canadian ships spend much time at sea. What battle station does a 100 pound clueless steward have? I’m betting it’s not a loader.
Our newest “warships” will be unarmed so they won’t need loaders.
I’m not even kidding. The new arctic patrol ships, which will be the biggest war ships ever built in Canada will be armed with one 25 mm gun.
Surely there are other jobs where people can be treated like crap and paid little.
