In Canada, nobody with a controversial trial is ever offered a jury. The prosecutors ensure judge alone by proceeding by summary conviction, if necessary, to ensure no jury. A relative was a non-lawyer judge. I don’t know if there are any of those left. He said he could send people to jail for up to 14 years. He was a hanging judge so nobody plead guilty to be sentenced by him. They waited for the circuit judge to hit town once a month and then plead guilty.
