The number of refugee claimants and illegal immigrants attempting to enter Canada has fallen sharply since U.S. President Donald Trump took office, federal data show. The Canada Border Services Agency had feared a surge of cross-border claimants fleeing American enforcement of immigration laws.

These statistics address attempted crossings at legal designated locations. It does not address illegal crossings at non-designated locations (which is increasing). At the same time, the US and Canada have increased their enforcement of those border areas and instituted new imaging technology and canine units. So, despite the increase, it could/would be much worse.
Also, there is evidence suggesting that smuggler operations are specifically referring “clients” to the Canadian border.
