ChekNews- Transport Canada change forces BC Ferries to prohibit damaged EVs

“To ensure passenger and crew safety, BC Ferries has recently updated its policy around the transport of electric vehicles due to the potential fire and environmental risks associated with damaged lithium-ion batteries. Lithium-Ion batteries are widely used, but when damaged or handled improperly, they can pose a serious fire risk,” said the corporation in a statement.

  1. My dad lives on the 17th floor of an ultramodern apartment building. It has a dozen EV charging stations in the underground garage beneath the structure, and they get used. Including by my dad for his EV. Needless to say I won’t be moving there when we downsize and sell our detached hime.

    1. “Damaged” ev’s should be banned from EVERYWHERE. Banned from private garages. Banned from public garages. Banned from public streets. They should be isolated clear of any other object in a junkyard.

  2. But what about the ferry batteries?
Operated by “highly skilled” BC ferries employees..You know, like the ones that tried to move an island with The Queen of The North.
    And more importantly.
How will BC Ferries conclude that the battery is “damaged”?
    Who decides?

That’s what I was wondering. The same goes for EVS with damaged batteries in parking garages, whether under a building or not.

  3. Ha Ha Ha.
Hey, Vancouver Island Greenies…you are now banished ON the Island. You can’t load your EV on the ferry for a Sodomy night in Hongcouver. Sucks, eh, butt plug?
Keep your virtuous shit flowing into the Fuca Strait while you recycle your Amazon boxes and drive your EVs past a tent city to line up for your skinny latte, then show up late for your fake government job, after which, you will skip the dishes and just order in some avocado toast, then hook up with some rainbow friends.
    Did I miss an aspect?

    1. No … you nailed it! Made me laugh at every descriptive adjective.

And now you’ve got me diving into Spirit

        1. It’s natures way of telling us … something’s WRONG.
          Something’s WRONNNGG
          Something’s Wrooooonnnnnggg!!!
Case in point every Queer Pride event this past weekend. Are we DONE with gay month yet?

  4. Very carefully no mention of WHY the rules change. How many bulk transports are we up to now that had an EV (or hybrid) spontaneously combust and they had to abandon ship because there’s no way to extinguish them?

I guess one more than was deemed acceptable risk.

  5. While a damaged EV battery might be more likely to combust, that doesn’t mean an undamaged one won’t. I recall seeing a number of photos here on SDA, of ships burning at sea because one of their brand new, undamaged EV cargo erupted into flames.

  6. How about just banning them from the ferries whether damaged or not.
They can combust at any time.

  7. What will BC Ferries do when the batteries catch fire on their new Chinese-built electric ferries?
