Western Canada Secession: Why Does the West stay in Canada?

Alberta exported over $161B worth of products to the US in 2024.

Alberta and Ontario had $15.5B in two way trade in 2022

Saskatchewan exported $29B worth of products and commodities to the US in 2023

No clear data available for Saskatchewan trade numbers with Ontario, but suffice to say trade with the US exceeds trade within Canada.

British Columbia has 19 border crossings with the United States, Alberta has 6, Saskatchewan has 12, and Manitoba has 16. There is just 1 narrow 2 lane road through 1,000 miles of wilderness connecting all of Western Canada with Ontario, Quebec and the Atlantic provinces, yet the East rules the lives of Western Canada?

Ontario and Quebec won’t buy oil from Western Canada, preferring to buy from the US, or Saudi Arabia. Even Russian oil is preferred to Canadian oil.

Ottawa will not allow Western Canada to export LNG to other countries, forcing Europe to rely on Russian LNG.

The Liberal government won’t even fight the 100% tariff on Canadian canola.

The only thing Eastern Canada wants from the West are tax dollars which they give to provinces dealing with insolvency.

So why do we stay? What advantage is it to stay part of a government that hobbles us at every level? It’s time Western Canada breaks free from the Stockholm Syndrome that has held us back for over a century. I don’t know exactly what that will look like, but I do know it will be better than what we have now.

Special thanks to Quebec for paving the way forward.

  1. If you want to make this happen just mail as many liberal MPs telling them how big a majority they would have if you removed all the Alberta and Saskatchewan seats from the HoC and the Senate.
    Also
Instead of referring to it as eastern Canada use the proper term
    Upper and Lower Canada

    1. We need carney to make this happen. We need the pain and he, boy, is he gonna bring it. Watch the sh7t coming our way in the next 6 months, he’s going after everything. But we need it! As long as people can still heat their homes, drive their cars, eat some meat, go to mexico for winter break, have doctor waiting list < 6 months, etc, etc they will not vote to leave. That is going to change.

We need the pain and it is coming.

    2. 100% EXTREME, FAR-Left political future GUARANTEED for the East. CA on steroids, err Estrogen …

  2. I cannot think of any reasons why Alberta and Saskatchewan remain in Canada. No economic reasons to stay. We are also ideologically and politically the opposite to the rest of Canada. The rest of Canada’s treatment of Alberta and Saskatchewan will never change, it will always be abusive. There is nostalgia perhaps but the Canada that Alberta and Saskatchewan people fondly remember no longer exists.

The question is if Alberta and Saskatchewan want to go down with the Canadian wreckage or jump ship into a lifeboat and chart their own destiny.

    1. The more one thinks about the more one realizes wthe West has no connection to the ROC.

      1. Any connections we had have frayed. The thing that the rest of Canada doesn’t seem to understand is how very little effort it would have taken to prevent the fraying. All they needed to do was stop interfering in our economy and stop attacking our industries. Alberta and Saskatchewan could grudgingly live with being forced to share a bit of our wealth but will not allow the rest of Canada voting to destroy the source of our wealth.

    2. I agree having spent most of my life in Ontario and ten years in Alberta, it’s clear Alberta and Saskatchewan would do well on their own, and really have no need for Ontario and especially Quebec

  3. Ukraine unilaterally left the Soviet Union because they refused to be dictated to by Moscow any longer. We are pretty much in the same position now in Canada.

    1. Come on Art, how many artillery pieces does CAF have and how many shells per month can be produced?
It is nothing like the Uke’s situation. The enforcement is the RCMP that AB and SK oddly still choose to pay the wages of.

    2. Except Canada is unlikely to engage in a “special military operation.” I think Montana and Idaho National Guard might be persuaded to show up, perhaps unofficially.

  4. Simple. Because the West – just like the rest of the country – has too many urban voters who want their arses wiped by governments.

  5. Listen, bitch.
    You want to leave, leave.
If you don’t then shut the fck up.
    You go to work.
    I get drunk.
And yeah, I’m going to keep beating you if you stay.

  6. I moved here thinking most people in the west were like Kate – smart, industrious, entrepreneurial. But it’s not what I’ve found. There are people like that here, but not enough of them. I don’t think there’s a critical mass of Kate-like people here to make a go of western independence. I hope I am wrong, and I will certainly fight and likely die for it should we ever attempt it. But I don’t think we well. The western cities and the low-information segment of the population will hold us back.

But when the time comes, sign me up.

    1. Agreed. Born and lived my entire childhood in SK, and lived years in AB as an adult before moving south.
      Dual citizen now.

My data is more than a decade old and may be a bit stale now, but unfortunately, the polls for secession in AB never exceeded 40%, but never went under 25%. In SK, it was lower than the 40% top in AB.

Marx Carnage will know that and will continue abusing AB. Poorly informed people will correctly note that AB and SK are land locked, and then suggest that that fact prevents a successful independence drive – they never acknowledge that land locked Switzerland is more successful on a per capita basis than Canada despite it having fewer natural resources.

I do wish you well, though.

      1. That may change this time, but I’m afraid you may be right. I haven’t been here long enough to gauge the mood of AB, but from my limited experience in the west, it appears that the rural voters are more inclined to give separation a good hard look. It’s the urbanites… those who live in the larger cities… that want things to stay the same.
What gives me hope is that the rural voters may outnumber the urbanites, and this time, the idea of separation appears to be gathering some steam in the mainstream.

        1. the problem is over the last 30 years a lot of liberal from the east and Ontario moved to Alberta and brought that liberal disease with them

          1. Then you must rig the independence vote. Fight dirty. Lord knows they do.

Independence vote is only open to those born in Alberta and lived there for at least 25 years. This is much more important a question than mere trade policy, so you need a qualified franchise.

Remember, Alberta joined Confederation under a qualified franchise in the first place, so if qualified franchise is invalid, then Alberta is actually NOT currently part of Canada! So qualified franchise is valid, and thus you apply it to the question of leaving.

          2. That’s it exactly. They move here for a better life but bring the same ideological insanity that brought them a worse life.

They would never vote to separate … unless the true economic argument is made that they are now with us, even though voting differently, the overpaying, colonized chumps of Canada just by virtue of living here. So, joke’s on them, kinda.

        2. “What gives me hope is that the rural voters may outnumber the urbanites”

They don’t and not only never will but rural folk will be an ever smaller share of the province, as the world.

The entire political right has to be torched and rebuilt centered around educated cosmopolitans.

          1. Which is why they must be disenfranchised. And before you get all boomery and colonialist/imperialist on us, just remember how fast Saigon fell in the end.

The current system was agreed to when 80% of Canada’s population was rural and lived on farms.

Your current system is illegitimate. Period.

          2. “Educated cosmopolitans” = tormentors, sadists and perverts, ideological and fascist cultists of a technocratic, UnFree utopia, for the “common good.”

            “Torched” = mountains of skulls.

  7. I get the sense that Danielle Smith isn’t interested in independence for Alberta. She’s been in office for about 3 years and hasn’t done zip to improve our situation in that regard.

I seem to recall another premier like that by the name of Kenney. I wonder what happened to him…..

    1. I too get that sense. She talks a bigger game than Kenney ever did, but she’s not acting on it any more than he did (which was, not a bit).

Moe’s arguably made of sterner stuff here as he’s refused to remit carbon taxes and seems determined to keep coal-fired power stations alive to maintain the SK provincial power grid despite federal regulations that will all but require they close. These are much more openly defiant stances toward Ottawa than anything Smith has done.

      1. Moe only moves when being poked by someone he fears. Right now, he’s fearing a leadership review and is placating some of his supporters.
Please don’t confuse his occasional rumblings with leadership, you may be disappointed.

  8. Cowardice. pure yellow bellied, hold my hand mommy government cowardice. No other reason. Anyone with half a brain can see the benefits, but there might be some pain on the way, Oh no mommy I don’t like pain.

  9. Nobody has mentioned this amid all of the whoopee and hoopla of last night but here is a cold dose of reality to think about and consider. Sometime in the last two years someone, somewhere in Britain convinced the Labour party that they could squeeze more money out of the tax-payer by fudging the inheritance tax. By twiddling the numbers the supposed largest “transfer of wealth” in human history in Britain became the largest tax grab in history. Now consider our position here in Canada where the primary residence is tax exempt to the owner upon sale. Let’s say for argument that the someone in Britain that advised Starmer to fiddle the inheritance tax is in a position of influence to convince the government here to fiddle the inheritance tax. The Liberal party was already considering a capital gains tax on personal property, what if they introduced an inheritance tax. Instead of the largest transfer of wealth from the ‘Boomer’ generation we’ll have the largest transfer of taxes owing to Gens X,Y,and Z. Don’t think that’ll happen, then you haven’t been paying attention.

  10. I think being governor of the State of Alberta would be a much better job than premier. And pay would be in greenbacks, not pesos.

      1. You can’t possibly be so definite and credible at the same time, unreal. Not when you don’t have the facts to back up any of your rhetoric.

  11. Western Separation?
    Oh please.
You’ll have to leave behind Winnipeg and Northern Manitoba, Regina,Saskatoon and Northern Saskatchewan, Calgary and Redmonton, Vancouver and Southern BC.
It’ll look like the Townships of South Africa.
And don’t forget by far the largest Liberal voting block – Women!
    BrokeBack Buffalo?

    1. Smak – Karens transformed universal suffrage into universal suffering taking themselves with it

  12. As I understand it, the western (and central) provinces instituted their own “sovereignty acts”, although in an effort to get them passed, they were somewhat watered down. Enacting them on specific Federal legislation is always going to result in a court battle to determine constitutionality.

I suspect sometime in the next two weeks your newly minted PM is going to take a jaunt to France for an unscheduled meeting between Canada, the EU, and the UK. The purpose will be to enhance CETA and create “unofficial ties” between Canada and the EU (and UK). This will result in the EU requiring that Canada fall in line with all regulations and restrictions associated with the EU member states “unelected governments”. This will result in Ottawa making a concerted push to force the Western and Central provinces into accepting (not only Green legislation) but, also, those across the board regulations (and Common Law applications) in every day governance. The delivery system will be to try and convince the provinces that this is the only way to avoid total economic devastation. IOW, page 6 of the Liberal playbook….create fear and capitalize on relaxed individual rights.

At that point…the decision has to be made. Go along with the tyranny due to the “circumstances of the time”…OR take the plunge and determine one’s own future. It would not surprise me to see the term “sovereign territory” becoming a buzz word in the not too distant future relative to Canada. It’s an alternative to the never happening “51st State.” When a province is trading $161 Billion with a foreign country and that amount is in excess of it’s own country, it’s not too far a step to declare sovereignty, and enhance that trade relationship to reflect a mutually beneficial agreement that would allow it to grow.

    1. You can probably depend upon it.

I would say that there will be two such meetings: one before your PM speaks to my President, and one afterwards. Although they may just wait to coordinate during the G7 in Canada — it would save on greenhouse emissions.

Watch the sales of German bunds and Swiss francs.

    2. Which is why it is so hypocritical for Lieberals to scream Kanada is sovereign when dealing with the USA. Its sovereignty was given away long ago to foreign entities.

  13. One more thing.. this does not detract from your overall thesis. Enbridge line 5 takes Western Canadian oil into Ontario but it doe not go any further. Most of the product stays in Sarnia but some goes through Line 7 into the Toronto area.

    1. Don’t forget… Line 5 also goes right through the state of Michigan. Is that any way to build energy independence?

    1. Not this baby boomer. I never voted Liberal nor NDP and I never will.

I’m one of the many boomers who found themselves out of work thanks to PET’s NEP and its aftermath. I still cringe when I think of what I went through in the 1980s or hear the name Trudeau with reference to Pierre.

    2. Oh, horseshit. [spit] Progs voted for Carnage, some of whom are boomers and some of whom are not. Take a look at that electoral map & see that hundreds of thousands of boomers, if not more, didn’t vote for the prick.

If you guys can’t even identify the problem, how the hell do you expect to come up w/ a solution?

      1. Shut up already the data is clear, it was boomers and has been in every federal election after 2015.

        1. KMHUA.

Yes, the data is quite clear: 100% of [spit] Progs voted for the left, whether Carnage, Jagderp or Jizzy. 100% of boomers did not.

    3. I didn’t vote Lieberal or Dipper. Never have and never will. But there is a reason Boomers are called the Me Generation.

  14. When in a relationship (personal or business) with a partner(s) that you have lost trust in because they make unilateral decisions that are to your detriment and they do not pay their fair share of expenses and/or take more than their share of the revenue, you are better off if you terminate the relationship. There could be some short term pain/expense but in the long run the sooner you terminate the relationship the sooner you will be over the pain/expense and the happier you will be in the long run. There are too many votes in the east, therefore, Quebec/Ontario politicians will continue their abuse of western Canadians as long as Canada exists as it is today.

    1. I spent a year at UBC when I started grad studies in the late 1970s. Being a conservative, I didn’t fit in with the social and political mentality of Lotusland.

The attitude I got was that since I was from the eastern side of the Rockies, I was a hick, a hillbilly, a bumpkin, and a rube. My duty to Canada, and to the Lotuslanders in particular, was to shut up and be grateful that I, the ex-pat Albertan I was at the time, was allowed to remain in the country.

I don’t see any evidence that sentiment has diminished in the years since I lived in the area.

  15. Trump is licking his chops , knowing that Marx Carney will set Canada on a path of net zero resulting in our standard of living being torpedoed . He will gladly pick up the spoils . Western Canada has an opportunity , not so the eastern bastards .

    1. “Let the eastern bastards freeze in the dark.” I believed it when that slogan was a bumper sticker 50 years ago, and I still do.

  16. The landmine in any Provincial succession can be found in the Supreme Court wording, regardless of the percentage that wants to leave Bananada: The HofC determines if the succession Question is clear.
No matter how clear that question, the HofC (with, cough cough, Liberal+NDP majority) can simple state that it’s not clear enough.
BUT, the decision applies to “citizens of Canada”. Albertans could take out citizenship in the Republic of Alberta (multi-passports are allowed), then renounce their Canadian citizenship.
Full Speed Ahead; Damn the Torpedoes.

  17. Here’s the thing about money. It attracts idiots, morons, lazy people and socialists. Alberta has a lot of money. I will let those able to do the math

    1. What is holding you? The three sane provinces are welcome. Figuring out how to get 53 stars in a symmetrical pattern is going to be a problem. Maybe just two of you.

  18. Well, I sent my donation to albertaprosperityproject.com last night. Is secession gonna happen? Maybe, maybe not. I know from history that we’ll be under the thumb of an increasingly socialist and tyrannical Ottawa if we don’t at least try.

Be happy to hear about any other legit organizations to support.

The best time to leave Canada was over 40 years ago. The second best time is now. LFG.

  19. Because those most actively advocating for separation are the worst people and they do a terrible job. Yahoo performance art.

    1. Projection. Sorry to hear about your poor performance review. Don’t get depressed, try harder. Nose to the grindstone. Lots of upward mobility available within Tm Hortons I’ve heard

  20. Western Separation is coming.
The fiscal reality of Canada is much too grim.

As the question was “What benefit does Canada provide Alberta”?
    Or “Why does Alberta Stay”?
    Damned if I know.
Usually I can see both sides of an argument..
But I draw a blank on what Canada has to offer .
All I see is the destruction, past, present and future.
By their actions you can know them.

But Confederated Canada supporters don’t seem to be able to make a case for why Alberta and Saskatchewan will be better off remaining as Provinces of Canada.
All they seem to have is contempt, some name calling and “F.U we rule”.
    As Canada spirals into chaos.

Westerners will be outnumbered in Canada for the forseable future.
The mob rules in any Democracy.
And when it is to the benefit, however short term, of the Eastern Voters to rob Western Citizens ,the majority keeps voting to make it so.

Reform was tried, nobody in the East gave a damn.
We are in a different era than Reform, much poorer, more indebted and so much less free of the “Helping Hand of the Bureaus”.
And thanks to Preston Manning,Steve Harper ,ect, we can say”We tried” .
    Now we do something different.
The deal Quebec has..That looks real good.

But we already know,we cannot trust our comrades to the East.
    They lie by default.
Nothing they say is worth the time it took to listen.
    Their words have no meaning.

    So why would we negotiate?
    With whom?
    And with what “good faith”?

    Why do we stay?
Cause government run education has been a resounding success, too few school graduates can do basic maths.
Only now,as poverty hits home,do the young start to realize, they are boned…

For the reason WEXIT is unavoidable, is mathematics.
We are expected to pay a very high proportion of the debt.
We get zero say of the policies that created said debt.
And near zero real benefit from all that spending of borrowed money.
In fact we have experience mostly negative benefits for decades.
Now these Fools and Bandits top it off with their Gang Green Ideology.

As they rub in the insult from the Dread Covid Theatre..This State of Thuggery, where most of the citizens will line up to rat each other out..Is not worth defending, financing or even tolerating..
Elbows Up,the chicken dance of Canadian Intellect.
