They’re using wind turbines to blow that water ashore where they want rising sea levels because global warming.
Have they measured inside of AOC’s head?
“where the sea level dips 106 meters due to weaker gravity.” – I don’t get it?
106 meters sounds like a lot, like 300 feet, but okay.
If gravity is weaker there wouldn’t you have a ‘bubble’ of water at that point?
That’s my way of looking at it, also…
I suspect weaker gravity causes less ocean water to be retained at that point, thus the lower sea level. Goes a ways toward pointing out the mistaken nature of believing that sea level behaves similarly all over the planet.
l suspect the higher gravity in the surrounding area tends to ‘pull away’ the water that would have a normal and consistent curvature.
ie imaging a pc of black hole somewhere in the ocean floor. it would likewise tend to ‘strip away’ water from the surrounding surfaces n’est-ce pas?
That’s it. Counterintuitive for sure. It must be huge, and with a considerable difference in mass of the rocks underneath it compared to adjacent.
The water is ‘pulled’ to where the gravity is stronger. The weaker gravity area cannot win the tug-o-war, so it loses water.
On the bright side (there’s always a bright side), if you take a cruise through that area, you can hit the buffet all you want and you won’t gain the usual extra 5-7 pounds. Well, until you get back to port, that is.
during an Apollo mission Eugene Cernan let out a cuss when the capsule swerved downward due to a high density spot on the moon that increased the gravity as they passed over.
havent gone back despiute all the sci fi and hoopla. squandered the cash on the seriously flawed shuttles that put everything in one vehicle instead of launching crew and the huge payloads separately. then frittered the rest of it away on the ISS.
apparently some folks are stuck on it. how does that happen?
“Mystery of the Indian Ocean’s Gravity Hole Finally Solved!”
Could it be that ancient aliens from another dimension have installed a cosmic gateway and a sucking matter from earth. I’m sure that’s as plausible as anything
I’m less attracted to that area of the Earth.
Har!
I didn’t realize the graphic was an animated video with voice-over. I just listened to it and the narrator says the gravity low is caused by a plume of molten rock from the upper mantle bringing less dense material closer to surface. This is totally wrong of course as the upper mantle (olivine-rich dunite and peridotite) has a higher density than do the overlying crustal rocks, much of it being under-compressed ocean sediments. I wanted to say the more likely answer is the ancient ocean created a thick sequence of lower density sediments that is now concentrated below the current ocean sediments creating an extra thick layer of lower density sediments.
But it’s actually an unknown problem occurring over many subduction zones. The paper below attempts to answer the question “why are subduction zones gravity lows” but they admit they don’t know either (that’s refreshing).
“Mature subduction zones exhibit broad low gravity anomalies of ~ 200–250 mGal centered at distances of 150–200 km from the trench which are not found over immature subduction zones. The cause of the broad low gravity anomalies over mature subduction zones is debatable due to lack of information on the deep crust and upper mantle structure and property. We discuss the following four causes: (1) serpentinization of the upper mantle beneath the forearc; (2) presence of partial melt in the mantle wedge caused by release of volatiles from the slab, frictional heating and distributed by mantle circulation; (3) difference in density structure between the overriding and subducting plates caused by difference in age and thermal structures with and without compositional stratification between crust and mantle; and (4) anomalous thickness of the arc not explained by isostasy.”
Serpentinization is the addition of water into the olivine-rich silicate which breaks it down and lowers the overall density of the rock by as much as 20%.
Gravity also varies with the distance to centre of mass. I was expecting the answer to be atop the ice (also low density) at the south pole.
Ah right, gravity. The still unproven theory whose existence can only be inferred by what a select few tell us about “outer space”.
The force that can’t be unified with actual, known, testable forces like electricity and magnetism.
But the force that is absolutely essential to keep the fiction of “outer space” and a globe earth alive.
Hence its required teaching in schools to program new generations into believing, even as basic math and other core subjects are left to languish. Much like the theory of evolution.
Weird.
