  1. Dan Knight on X/Twitter gives a decent summation as well…

“This isn’t just about Trudeau—it’s about the fundamental balance of power in Canadian democracy. If the court accepts this argument, it will mean that future Prime Ministers can suspend Parliament indefinitely to avoid accountability.”

    “That’s not democracy. That’s dictatorship.”
    …
“So stay tuned, because today’s hearing could decide whether Canada remains a parliamentary democracy—or just another country where the leader can hit pause on democracy whenever it suits them.”

  2. A rush decision takes a week? This case should have been put on the agenda the day after it was submitted. Wouldn’t surprise me if it’s March when a decision comes down. Sheesh!

    1. the case was filed on January 9th, the judge agreed that it was an “emergency” and schedule it for Feb13 and 14th and probably wont rule until mid march

  3. Reminds me of another parliament few centuries ago when the executive in a pique closed down parliament because they wouldn’t continue to fund his every whim.
Seem to recall that didn’t end well for him either.
    But I digress
It seems our “constitutional monarchy” has been compromised by the PMO assuming executive privilege where that privilege is the sole reserve of the crown.
Time to reinstate the legal limit on the legislature (specifically the PMO) that the “advice to the Governor General” should be understood that the GG is within their constitutional right to disagree with the advice if they detect something is remiss.

  4. Remember folks, the judge here is the infamous “Kangaroo” Crampton. He’s politically… aware. We can count on him to rule according to political winds rather than law. Prediction; watch the polls, he’ll rule based on whichever side is strongest.

  5. The Liberal racist Party government gets a snow day from their Supreme Court because they showed up stupid, perhaps the little ones on the Supreme Court should be prorogued too? And the Gov General!

What happened to the supremacy of parliament? Why does this “legal” mechanism have to be used to resolve issues of governance in this pathetic little backwater? Where are our Members of Parliament?

  6. Any chance that those doing these videos could calm down the music and turn down the volume? How many of those who should hear this turn it off as soon as it blares out at them?

A lot less self-congratulatory dead air and rambling and more clear, concise summary would immeasurably improve the impact of the message. It is bad enough that we are forced to watch the LNDP browbeat us like this; I think we should be making out argument with a contrast in style as well as substance. More of the same might be fun; but it will not produce any converts and those of us who support the cause don’t need more of the same pain.

The argument is valid. A failed minority government, facing a declaration by all opposition parties (and no, the party of two is not a party) to defeat it; led by a failed prime minister who publically has given up and “resigned”, having lost even the confidence of his own caucus. How is there any moral or ethical or legal) right to prorogue parliament to avoid the issue?

To facilitate his replacement by a man who has never been elected, by way of a loosey-goosey poll of a few thousand supporters of the failed party? If the current incumbent and his party have almost no claim to continuing as prime minister; what claim can be made for his replacement? None. And now Mr Carney is hinting that he may not call an election and might try and govern by ‘emergency powers’?

Canada has not had effective national government for some time. A prime minister who flits back and forth across the globe; when he is not off on vacation and a ministry riddled with resignations (although few that give up the paycheck). An election to address this should have been called on 7 January 2024, with Trudeau’s announcement that even he has had to recognize this.

Every day of delay since then is an abomination, and the slow-walking of this valiant effort to address that is another abomination. We know where Mr Poilievre stands; where are the other opposition parties on petitioning the crown to do what should be done? Recall parliament and test confidence. Now.

  7. Its one thing to live in a shitty country, its another thing to live in a shitty country that used to be good and by now should be awesome.
Thanks Liberals, Liberal/NDP voters and assorted pieces of shit.

  8. Trudy Prorogued Parliament so he could have a leadership race, what does that have to do with with our democracy? He has no legal right to shut down the government so he can anoint his replacement without debate.

    1. He shut it down because his government is corrupt and 100’s of millions – probably billions – of dollars have been literally given away with no expectation of a return. The fcker and his cabinet should all be in jail.

      1. there is no penalty for corruption in the government of Canada unless the government is conservative

  9. Makes no sense. Parliament used to meet for a few months per year and the country survived. I remember back to my childhood when fall sessions weren’t routine. The cabinet runs the country while Parliament passes laws. On top of that the Governor General calls Parliament, although on the advice of the Prime Minister. I can’t see the courts second guessing the discretion of the Governor General.

    1. the problem is that unlike the UK, Australia and NewZealand, Canada hasn’t bothered to temper the reserve powers of the Governor General, nor require that the government provide a reason for Prorogation. I don’t expect this court case to go anywhere, and probably be mooted by the time they actual rule.

      1. Yep. There’s no law and precedent is the Governor General can exercise their judgement without as they see fit. I doubt that the Governor General was even being unreasonable. The NDP and Bloc Fasciste had 3.5 years to bring a non-confidence motion. What is so effing critical about a 2 month break? It would really concern me if judges were bullying the Governor General.

  10. If this gives a win for Canada being allowed to have a parliament, great. Second play will be warning the GG that appointing a new PM (Carney or Freeland) who does not have the confidence of parliament would also be unconstitutional: a PM can only be appointed if they have the confidence of a majority of parliament.
The much hated Trudeau should stay on as PM until after election.

  11. Should the government view prevail..another bonus to Western Separation.
    “Dear Leader is Good.
    Dear Leader is Great.”
Will be the new and improved national anthem.
    This is end stage kleptocracy.
    Canada is collapsing.
Which people outside the bubble can see more clearly than those within.
Hence our old retired politicians crying for unity to resist Orange Man,whose major sin has been to tell Canadians that “Your state is failing”.

That we lack everything that defines a nation, governed by ideologues, bankrupt and heading for civil war..
In other words we are becoming a threat to the USA’s security.
Followed by “Please smarten up or I ,as President, will have to impose incentives for you to do so”.
    Canada’s response?
    “Wahh”.
    “You can’t say that”.
    Emperor Justine is naked.
    The State of Thuggery’s solution?
Pass censorship laws ,so that no citizen dare point at the flabby fool and laugh.
We can hope that this challenge succeeds.
But don’t bet the farm on it.
For so many reasons WEXIT is the only sane road to follow.

  12. It is supposed to be the people in charge of the government, not the other way around.
Any change in governing leadership should force and election. Period. No if’s ands or Gerald Butts!
