It was my understanding Venezuela has heavy crude that can compete with Alberta oil for Gulf of America refining capacity, Venezuela is no friend of the US, I think they have a $25M bounty on the Venezuelan President, Grenell just flew down there and freed hostages and Venezuela agreed to retrieve their own migrants back from the US, Quite a concession, maybe the US offered to buy lots of cheap crude from Venezuela? Do not underestimate how much Trump despises the despicable Canadian federal government. I think maybe Canadian energy exports are going to slowly decrease both in value and volume.

    2. I’ve heard that a few times but the numbers don’t work out. Venezuela produces only about 900,000 barrels of oil per day, their *total* daily production . Alberta sells 4.4 million barrels *per day* to the US. Venezuela would have to increase oil production by 4x and sell all of it to the US.

      The other problem is that the Alberta crude goes by pipeline to Midwest refineries, who are designed for heavy crude oil from Alberta. Venezuelan heavy oil would have to be shipped by boat to a US coastal port, making it difficult to get sufficient oil supply to those landlocked refineries.

A good percentage of Venezuela’s export crude goes to China for the loans they provided +10 years ago, I don’t know how much they owe, but the Venezuelans don’t produce anything else which would pay that debt, and much of the Venezuelan crude is high in sulfur so can only be processed in refineries built for that.
        Venezuela was on their way to producing 5 mbpd and since the PDVSA strike, has fallen to below 1mbpd, I still see some people in central Calgary with PDVSA jackets… none of that expertise will return.

        They’d struggle to increase this for a decade before reaching a goal of 3 mbpd, but I doubt the USA is going to provide the expertise they’d need for that as long as Maduro is in power, the USA still hasn’t recognised the fraudulent election, so I doubt they’ll help. Baker Hughs and Schlumberger were either kicked out or left on their own accord when their well servicing accounts hit $1 billion each and there was no sign of them being paid. I don’t know the interest on this debt after 15 years…

      How many contain fentanyl? No one knows. US Customs and Border Protection thinks it’s a major source of fentanyl.

      Has the US moved to reduce such shipments? Has the US decided to lower the duty free level from $800 down to say $50?

If we cut off potash exports, the US will not have a corn or wheat or soy crop by fall. There’s no way they’d be able to replace it in time for spring planting. Those crops will drop probably by a third, or more, in yields. How about nickel? Cobalt? Uranium? It doesn’t have to be oil. How many people will go hungry when the US is all of a sudden shortage on food a year down the road? Would that devastate us? Absolutely. But the US is doing this to us. What are we do do? Brian I appreciate your insight into oil and gas, but thinking that cutting off potash exports to the US will result in a reduced crop is a stretch. the most common fertilizers in North America are 82-0-0, 46-0-0 and 11-51-00, nitrogen being the first number, phosphorous the second number and sulfer being the third number. the Canadian prairies are rarely deficient in potassium, and I would suggest the northern great plains of the US would be similar. I sold fertilizer for years and can only remember selling potassium fertilizer once, and that was to a greenhouse operation. Since natural gas is the feedstock for nearly all nitrogen fertilizer production in North America our gas exports are safe for the foreseeable future albeit with reduced margins.
            Peter summed up the problem better than anyone else. Canada has been freeloading for years under the Liberals, and the Junior’s clown show has convinced Trump that Canada is not serious, except when it comes to trash-talking the US.

    As to the assertions that Trump is trying to divide Canada for US purposes – what purposes? We’re all better off working together. What Trump is doing is dividing Canada from its ultra-progressive rulers. He hates Trudeau. He wants him gone. Accomplish that, and I think Trump is your friend once again.

    But instead, Canada’s progressives will use this as a lever to further divide Canada – all to keep progressive rule. Unite everyone against a common enemy – even if there’s no real enemy. A common and dishonest tactic amongst the left.

  23. The Turd government and their Media allies, having been warning that US tariffs on Canadian goods will increase costs for Americans. Well in 2024, the Canadian dollar, spent a lot of time in the 74.4 cent area.
    Last week it briefly dipped into the 68 cent range. If the Canadian dollar keeping dropping, say to the 60-62 cent area, the difference in exchange rates, would offset the increase in the cost of US tariffs.

    The costs of Alberta heavy crude, with a 10% tariff would be completely offset with a 63 cent Canadian dollar!

America is the one being led by a deranged imbecile who thinks tariffs are beautiful, other western and many eastern countries are somewhat rational in this regard. That’s why the UK, NZ, and AUS are tying up CEPA agreements with the UAE.

        I think the Asia-Pacific neighborhood looks like a good place to invest. Maybe China too if they stop being stupid but Xi is dead set on ruining everything.
