President Mulino said he plans to NOT renew it when it expires in a “year or two” – BUT, he wants to see if the agreement can be exited EARLY.
This agreement essentially increases China’s economic influence in member countries.
President Donald Trump has been pressuring Panama to curb Chinese influence around the Canal – and Rubio was sent this weekend to convey this message.
I bet the follow through on the tariffs was persuasive.

I think the bigger influence for Panama is that 80% of the GNP is Tourism and Service oriented (primarily dealing with the Canal). They can’t afford to lose backbone (and body) of their economy. There are still quite a few Panamanians alive that can personally remember the last time we came down there to pick up Manuel Noriega.

This is the best move Trump has made since Jan.20th. China is taking over ports,railways and canals all over the world,wherever desperate or stupid leaders are in place.
There are 185 countries signed on to the B&R initiative, China is winning by stealth. They must be some pissed off that Kamala Harris lost.
BRI was and is mostly a white elephant for China. Tons of high-cost low-performance projects.

That takes resources, and when the tin pot country defaults on the BRI loans, China takes the collateral, which is the project, plus. They own some African countries, lock, stock and barrel, and those countries have resources they need.
I recently visited Costa Rica. Beautiful new football stadium in San Jose. It was totally financed and built with Chinese labour and materials. They are also building nice 4 lane highways, which they build at a pace that suits them Not Costa Rica. Our local guide said that making a deal with them is like shaking hands with the Devil.
Jamaica has a nice new hiway thanks to China, but at fifteen bucks a pop for locals, it’s empty.
I hope PP takes notes on how to implement what the voters who will put him in office will be expecting, and swiftly!
