I, For One, Welcome 我们的自动驾驶新霸主

It’s probably nothing.

  1. I think it possible that this “AI” is actually half a million Chinese prisoners chained to desks. It is a trick that’s been done before.

    1. I remember an article from way back in BC that speculated on “Monastery computing, with monks in series and parallel”

    2. OTOH … as an avowed audiophile … the ChiComs have reverse engineered literally every top quality electronic brand’s circuitry and design. And their knock-offs are all damn good … for a tiny fraction of the cost of the originals. The ones with Chinese name plates don’t trouble me too badly, as you know what you’re buying.

But … when the ChiComs flood the market with imitation products such as “replicas” of Koetsu cartridges and other ultra high end equipment … it’s disgusting, and should be shut down by interpol.

I have no doubt their spies within our AI firms have stolen everything we have. However … I doubt they’ve programmed their AI to represent George Washington as someone who … “looks like them”

    1. Saw 2 bombers and their overseer birddog in action on a fire one time, WOW.

      These pilots are the BEST.

  2. I like Phantom’s take. AI IS BS. Why do people want this and to do what? Do we really need helpline chat bots that return the same BS endlessly?

    Great scoop there, Pappy.

    1. Chinese AI is going to kick serious ass. Drone swarms of up to 50,000 devices, all net-linked, and doing the “flock of birds” trick against your super duper pooper F35. Good night Irene.

      1. Bomb the drone base. From high altitude, where drones don’t fly. Bomb the factory.

Takes a lot of manpower to mount a 50,000 drone operation. They gotta eat, and sleep, and use the men’s room. Same as everything else. That’s where you get them.

    2. I claim no special knowledge beyond what’s current on the web. I just think the Chicoms are scammers. First, last and always.

They’ve recently been caught lying about their own population. Seems there are about 1/3rd as many Chinese as the Chicom government says there are.

But they wouldn’t lie about AI? Sure.

  3. If China wants a war, China will starve. China does not want a war. China is part of The Club, as is Russia.
    This is about stopping Trump.
Everything you see is about stopping Trump.

  4. China has way better AI than the US. Therefore US companies need massive amounts of money (free from the government) to improve their AI. One of the oldest games in business.

  5. “ The US needs to get real serious about IP theft or it will not stay in the vanguard. “

Yeah well, that ship sailed decades ago. It was profoundly stupid to have ever “engaged” with China in the first place. A mass murdering communist dictatorship? Seriously? Honestly, the morons – dead (Nixon for one) – or alive – who thought this was a good idea need to be publicly named and shamed. The term “struggle session” comes to mind. lol.

    1. They only saw an untapped market for McDonald’s, KFC and Nike while also finding a way to lower our manufacturing costs. That it never occurred to them the Chinese operate as a government mafia that has no respect for silly western conventions like copyright and ip laws was beyond naive, unless, of course, it was also part of the long-game strategy of sellouts to reduce US hegemony after the demise of the Soviet Union. It’s truly astonishing that we continued to allow ourselves be entirely dependent on the Chinese for our manufacturing, production of essentials (steel, electronics, key pharmaceuticals, etc), while also allowing unfettered access here via “foreign students” and “researchers” (note: it isn’t lunch pail Joe Wong that is allowed to just leave mainland China to pursue their educational dreams). We should have shut it all down at the first signs of their malfeasance (think irrefutable evidence of currency manipulation). But, here we are…

  6. “Smoke and mirrors”
    “Glorified search engines”
    etc.
That’s why Trump made “Stargate”, he’s all in on this tech.
AI is a lot more than GPTs and LLMs.

  7. We Destroy Ourselves.
The world being slung into ever greater conflict by leaked and stolen IP started, most alarmingly, during the Manhattan Project.
Since then things have only gotten worse.

  8. The issue that is above the small minds to process.
China show cased advance gen 6 fighter.
China has quantum radar, that can track ‘stealth’.
    China causes butthurt at SDA.

      1. Clearly. He’s a #WinnieThePooh bro.

Hey, exclamation boi. What’s your plan to un-poison all the freakin’ farmland in China? Gonna use AI to run a billion little mops and buckets?

  9. People who do not know the difference between a GCD algorithm and a quick sort algorithm, have no clue what a 6000+ dimensional vector space is, and yet somehow think that their…opinions… about AI, neural network and LLM algorithms are of some value.
Its like Dem. politicians who have never held a rifle talking about gun control.
This is the sort of BS arrogance that gave us Freeland the financial genius and Turd the quantum computer expert. Canadian to a T.

    1. “People who do not know the difference between a GCD algorithm and a quick sort algorithm…”

A bold assumption, good sir. You haven’t seen the math where larger and larger training models produce smaller and smaller improvements? Almost as if the models were approaching a theoretical limit that can’t be crossed with more horsepower.

Also, the models are not -intelligent-. They are fast. That’s the difference between a human and an ant colony. Ants are fast.

      1. Those are called scaling laws or scaling limits.

Now you can complain that smart phones aren’t really smart. AI can do things no other type of software can do, and its being used in almost every sector.

        1. Yes, key word being “limit.” I’ve seen nobody talking about new mathematics to beat the limits. Just bigger models, more horsepower. Squeeze another 3% out of what they’ve got.

Meaning whatever the Chicoms are really doing, it most likely isn’t what they say they’re doing. Because lying liars lie, and you can’t steal what hasn’t been created yet.

Besides which, what are the chances that they’d have a huge breakthrough, beat the thing that’s holding everyone else back, and then tell everyone? That’s probably the last thing they’d do. Lying liars, right?

          1. Agreed.
The Chinese AIs are really no different than the American ones, although the political bias built into them will be different, and they will use different training sets.
I think limited scope LLMs are the way to go, with, say, a physics AI trained on only physics journals, etc.
These giant be all and end all LLMs while useful for research into how LLMs work, are not as useful as people think they are, but still, they can be useful for general info, just don’t trust them implicitly.
If you ask some guy on the street something, you don’t trust him implicitly, or even doctors or car mechanics, why would anyone trust an AI any more?
AI is just a tool, it has its uses and limitations, and the trick is to know how to use it, like with any tool.

  10. If they stole intellectual property to build it, they will steal your intellectual property when you use it. And I agree with previous commentors – AI is going to do more damage faster. It is not intelligence – it is data mining and comparison, putting forward the most popular opinions as truth which they are not. There is no discretion in AI, just information gathering and selection at high speed and volume. And any intelligence that it appears to have is merely reflective of its creator(s).

  11. I’ve got just as good a chance of understanding this: 我们的自动驾驶新霸主

    As I do this:

Meta is reportedly in “chaos” to respond.

Llama 4 is allegedly polling below R1.

Don’t know where grok 3 comes in.

    😉

  12. VLC is incorporating real-time, local AI translation into its software.
Yay! No more looking for subscripts, and no more woke translators for foreign films.

    1. Now if they could only fix that slow seeking bug that regressed in 3.0.13. Or get around to releasing 4.0.

The vast majority of software is shit because the vast majority of coders are shit. No amount of Dunning-Kruger effect, Stoll’s Syndrome buffoonery will change that.

  13. I take stories like this with a heavy dose of salt. China fakes everything, and is always declaring technological dominance in everything. At an AI conference two years ago, they showcased an AI that turned out to be a Taiwanese booth babe in a closet with a mocap app on a phone to animate an onscreen avatar while she responded to conference goers in broken Engrish: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wJRjQ_wMzA
