Mann Down

National Review- Pay Up, Mr. Mann

For more than eight years, the climate scientist Michael Mann harassed National Review through litigation over a blog post — until, eventually, the First Amendment brought an end to his attack. This week, a court in our nation’s capital ordered Mann to pay us $530,820.21 worth of attorney’s fees and costs, and to do so within 30 days. It is time for him to get out his checkbook, and sign on the dotted line.

    1. I was going to bring up this case but thanks for doing it ahead of me. See Mark Steyn’s comment in the link below. There are few people I wish a nasty cancer upon but Mann’s behaviour makes him one of those exceptions. After losing to Ball, Mann refused to pay costs (as awarded by the court) and holed up in a jurisdiction beyond the reach of the British Columbia court. A vile bastard Mann truly is.

    2. I hear the family had to set up a charity account just to help pay for the funeral expenses.
All of their money was spent fighting Mann.

    1. Yes, Mann has ignored previous damages he (still) owes. That’s why the judge put that “within 30 days” part in the judgement.

        1. Or else. Then Mann is in contempt of court on top of owing the judgement. The judge can make life miserable, and even more expensive, for Mann.

BTW, you cannot be thrown into prison for unpaid debts in the US. Debtors prison is no more. BUT, you can get jail time for contempt of court.

          1. But will the judge do that?

There will be lots and lots of delays, the judge may even have to spend years pondering the definition of ‘is’.

            Then it will get appealed.
Taking years. The appellate court will eventually throw it back to the lower court, and the cycle will repeat.

I hope I’m wrong, but Mann won’t pay a dime.

          2. It’s already been 8 years, joe. I think this is the end of the line for delays and appeals.

As near as I can make out, the judgement is for costs and attorney’s fees, so the amount isn’t subject to appeal. Punitive awards of [Carl Sagan voice] “$billions and $billions” can be appealed.

But, as Fred from BC pointed out, it is unlikely that Mann will personally pay a dime out of his own pocket.

The process is the punishment, but in this case, National Review was willing to stick it out in the belief that they would prevail. They did.

  1. I guess if we start seeing “disgraced former climate scientist….” in these stories some justice will have been served.

  2. Long overdue. Too bad Mann won’t actually pay it out of his own pocket.

Someone should sue the university he works for as well, for backing him even when they knew he was a liar.

    1. Fred from BC: “Too bad Mann won’t actually pay it out of his own pocket.”

Yup, Fred. This is the most likely scenario, IMO. The same ‘Gang Green’ paying his legal fees will pony up the $500-large.

    2. Well … HunterBiden didn’t have to pay his tax bill … a huge Democrat donor did that … nor did he pay rent for his beachfront Malibu home that was just incinerated … the same huge Democrat donor did that.

Leftists don’t pay for their mistakes … WE DO

  3. $500,000 in 30 days? Geez, I’d have to sell some hockey cards. Let’s see if he pays.

  4. When someone fails to pay, you put a lien on his assets, and show up with a bailiff to take possession of said assets.

  5. Time to Mann up, Mann down. Nice to see him get back some of his behaviour, hoisted on his own petard.
The news just keeps getting better. The weasel whining, pardons and commutations were fun enough, I thought.
Added to DeMarxists megalomaniacal machinations, shooting off their last bullet in a Manhattan court.
Too bad it was a blank, giving Trump cause to boomerang, blowback and book their bootstrapping brinkmanship.
With still have another week to inauguration. With the college national championship that day.
What other dystopic destruct delights wait?

  6. Michael Mann, just another lying sack of $hit pushing the moronic anti-scientific lie of AGW.

He’ll only be cast aside by his puppet masters once he’s no longer useful to them.

  7. there was a star trek episode, the klingon played by Cdn actor John Colicos surmises he might dissect Spock’s brain to see how it works.
lets start a go-fund-me to do that to Mann, get some insight into why a certain type approaches life with such consistent hostile intent right from the start.

  8. He will not pay anything. And no government official will do anything about it.
The laws only apply to conservatives in The USA (and Canada).
