Peter Menzies- Hey, feds, how are those broadcasting reforms going?
In summary, one year after the act was passed, the CRTC has incurred one related court appeal, dropped two proceedings, added five more and still hasn’t published any decisions from the three-week marathon hearing held last November and December.
No one outside the CRTC knows for sure why the brakes have been so firmly applied to what appeared to be a hell-bent-for-leather process. But it is probably the fact that they now must grapple with the consequences of their decision to treat the internet like traditional broadcasting. Those are many, but among them is that any actions taken by the CRTC are likely to increase costs and reduce choices for consumers.

The CRTC was once relevant, although not always in a good way, when all we had was broadcasting over the airwaves. With the introduction of cable, satellite, and the internet, though, they’re about as useful as Betamax.
Canadians feel safer with central planning.
Canadians are limp-wristed pussywillow buttercup Karens.
“But it is probably the fact that they now must grapple with the consequences of their decision to treat the internet like traditional broadcasting.”
I’d like to think this means they are worried about PeePee giving them the axe.
Does the Conservative Party of Canada have a policy on what they’re going to do with the CRTC?
I get they’re needed to ensure that 2 radio or Tv stations aren’t using the same frequency, but they have no business outside of the gov’t making it their business on censorship on a grand scale.
Will they treat 99% of the CRTC as they’ve promised to deal with the CBC?
… and why not!!
Industry canada can license frequencies, like they do for pretty much every other radio transmitter in canada, there doesn’t need to be a special division because it’s “TV”
I have no idea who has ultimate responsibility for this, I thought it was the CRTC as they’re the ones who hold public hearings when folks want a new channel for “broadcast” (remember that one?)
and if Industry Canada can do this, they should.
Shut down the CRTC there is a couple billon less in debt each year.
“Shut down the CRTC there is a couple billon less in debt each year.”
Not a bad idea….as KM says above, it no longer has much relevance in the age of cable, satellite, and the internet.
CRTC is about as useful as a whaling station…“You can’t stop what’s coming…that’s vanity”
the fruit of his majesties ‘edicts from on high’ style leadershyt.
