Murphy died at age 77 after a battle with cancer.
He died just one day after his column on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s stance on the Hamas atrocities of October 7 appeared on the front page of the print edition of the National Post.
“Rex could not be held back,” said Rob Roberts, editor-in-chief of National Post. “He filed what turned out to be his last column on Monday, so driven was he to voice his support for Israel and Canada’s Jewish community. It mattered immensely to him in his final days.
“His last email to me on Tuesday: ‘Did the piece make the online edition?’” said Roberts.

Mr. Murphy was quite the writer, a Canadian patriot. Despite was Joe says on this thread, Mr. Murphy spent the last days of his life defending Jews and Israel. He had a true moral compass.

Exactly so. Murphy despised Justatwit, and the Pretender who plays the role of Canada’s Prime Minister indeed has no moral compass. No one was better than Rex at pulling Justatwit apart.
One of my best memories of Rex was his weekend radio show on CBC “Cross Country Checkup”. This was at a time when CBC radio was actually worth listening to. This was obviously long before Catherine Tait got her vile hands on the network.

He was awesome, had such a way with words with some hilarious articles. Describing the truckers as diesel burning huns barreling down the 401 (from Trudeau’s point of view). He’s one of those guys that is truly irreplaceable.

This is a big loss. Rex was so talented, he was so principled, and courageous, he never backed down to anybody and told it like it is.

When I was willing and wanting to give up on CBC broadcast radio… there was Rex.

Even the strongest soldier must fall. Why ,oh why ,do we lose the best when we need them most. He fought to the end.
This saddens me. I didn’t know he was so sick but suspected as much when his National Post columns began appearing sporadically. I remember with fondness listening to him host CBC radio’s Cross Country Checkup, the only thing worth listening to on otherwise amateurish yet smug network. His common sense commentary on the National made him stick out like a sore thumb. Luckily for us, writing columns for the Post seemed to truly remove the fetters of sensitivity he was bound by while at mother Corp. Through his moral clarity and clear respect for ordinary, decent, hard working Canadians, he recognized everything that made the country great. I saw in Rex similar qualities that I also saw in people like Don Cherry and Christie Blatchford.
RIP Rex.

Pun intended, Rex was the king of commentary. Instead of using words to obfuscate and deceive, he used his mastery of language to demolish more precisely and completely the hypocritical, ignorant and immoral failings of his public targets. Like all men, he was imperfect e.g. the belief that Trudeau sr. was the greatest Canadian. Rex was a great Canadian nevertheless. RIP
