Sun- Cap on plastic production remains contentious as Ottawa set to host treaty talks
Negotiators from 176 countries will gather in downtown Ottawa this week for the fourth round of talks to create a global treaty to eliminate plastic waste in less than 20 years.

Tier 2 Canada’s crappy federal gov’t is going to foist all sorts of new rules on plastic consumption and disposal on Canadians, and in 20 years that area of the Pacific Ocean off the coast of China is going to be 2x as large as it is now from those idiots.
Will there be a plastics tax modelled after the carbon tax? Will there be “rebates” for the good people who fill their recycle bin?
I want my plastic bags back– the ones from the grocery. They were never only used once. Often multiple times.
Might be worth ordering a case of 2000 off the internet. Looks like Amazon will still ship them to Canada, for now.
Exactly. That’s another green l;ie that must be resisted, not meekly accepted. Whenever some twerp says “single-use plastic” interrupt and correct them. Do not let the lie pass.
Awesome… ask your local grocer if “water bottles…out of a plastic…sorry…away from plastic towards paper…like drink-box, water-bottle sorta things.” are in stock.
What a slanted shitty article.
Steven Guilbeault is a hirsute, ignorant twerp.
They should call him the Regulator because he has Zero solutions.
Just like the doctor complaining about endocrine disruptions. Give a solution or shut your gob, hag.
Hey Buddy, we both used the same adjective 🙂
My guess is that Alberta produces lots of oil-based plastic. Therefore the Trudeau-Guilbeault team with do its best to ban plastics. The two detest Albertans.
Plastic, stainless steel and electricity have done more for women’s health than all the NGO’s on God’s green earth.
It is very much not economical to attempt to recycle plastics. Not one will pay the price. It is much cheaper to make new plastic stuff.
If you want people to recycle their plastic, they you need to put such a high price on it. But then, who has the money to pay high prices for packaging and recycling … the modern world is confusing and messy and harsh, but bad leadership in recent decades have only make it many times worse than it needs to be.
Until we can vote for honest people who actually want to do what’s best for the country we will have plastic garbage and high interest rates in a country that has ‘NO VACANCY’ unless a tent will do.
I suggest going backward to make things less convenient, but more sensible, less polluting … where it takes more time to do things. Who knows, maybe we will put our god damned phone down long enough to notice the world around us.
The be clear, recycling plastic at the manufacture point makes sense, because it’s unused, and can easily be fed back into the same process, in the same way paper at printing plants was recycled. The problem started when municipal governments saw that it was possible to make money recycling at source, and someone projected how much money the governments would make from it.
Except, it’s always cost more to recycle post consumer materials (exception is glass and metals), and wiped out the recycling at source model as well.
It’s the same as recycling solar panels, even the best process available now gets you $8 worth of materials at a cost of $30.
Just shut down dollar stores. It will eliminate the burden of disposing the output from China’s recycling program and drastically reduce our children’s disappointment-filled lives from everything they throw a tantrum to get someone to buy for them breaking in the car on the way home.
That and the Powershist/Mastercrap single use power tools from unohoo
I’ve discontinued using disposable razors and use a safety razor with blades by Gillette manufactured in Russia. Doing my part for the “cause”.
and as usual… doing so without the consent of those they rule over… its for our own good… because every freedom they take away and every authoritarian rule they impose, no matter how useless, unjust or tyrannical they may be, it is how these hopelessly corrupt warped tyrants express their “virtue”.
One major (perennial) problem is that the “negotiators” will be hand-picked to ensure a predetermined, “binding” outcome. (And suitable cash “spillage” to the elites). This, in case anyone has not noticed, is how ALL such proceedings are conducted: ALWAYS a “solution in search of a problem.
ANY thermoplastic is almost infinitely recyclable IF CLEAN and uncontaminated. “cleaning” plastics contaminated by food residue garden chemicals ets, tends to involve the use of considerable amounts of CLEAN water………. Hence, also “grades” of recycling, where “substandard “feedstock” is made into “new material for “less critical” applications.
There are also thermosetting materials of which “Bakelite” id probably the best known. These do not “remelt”. About the only way to recycle a thermosetting material is to grind it to dust and use that as a “filler” in other applications. This also applies to Epoxy and Polyester resins because they involve permanent polymerization in the process of “hardening”. Think; busted blades from mega wind-powered “generators.
Are they gathering to laugh at Canada’s self destruction?
Given that Guilbeau is behind this, I anticipate that the proposed solutions will be:
1) Dictatorial
2) Costly
3) Ineffective
4) Based on misunderstanding the “problem”
5) Anti-industry
6) Counter-productive to their own cause
So we are indanger from “plastic polution” because we took a whole bunch of crude oil from the ground and processed part of it into the demon “plastics” which are a lot less polluting than the original crude. Taking crude out of the earth, processing it into something very useful then burrying it back into the earth (landfill) would be a bad thing?
Focus, Lefties, focus.
The plastics industry should be and probably are continuing reasearch into making more recyclable plastic types.
Let’s also not forget that besides landfilling and recycling, there is the option to extract the energy contained in plastics by burning them in properly-designed facilities such as cement plants and steel manufacturing plants. There will be an enormous jump in demand for concrete and rebar to build all those wind and solar “farms”.
Presumably, the Guilbeau conference is largely concerned about plastic contamination of the oceans. Fair enough, but consider where the ocean plastics are originating from. I have seen studies that indicate that about 90% of ocean plastics originate from Asia and Africa. A lot of the other 10% is from discarded fishing nets.
I live in Calgary wher our wind mostly blows from east to west. All of our rivers flow east toward Hudson”s Bay, at least 1,500Km away. We already have a plastics collection system (not sure how much is actually recycled). I expect that this conference will propose the same restrictions on Canada as they would on African and Asian countries because, well equity.
Lefties; “Focus”?
They are already “focused”: On the destruction of civilization and the “right-sizing” of the global population and the massive “redistribution of wealth, NONE of which they created. In “rough parlance, this ilatter is known as “armed robbery”.
They know EXACTLY what they are doing and are gleefully rubbing the noses of REAL PEOPLE in it.
This might be useful. At least until government finds out about it and taxes it into oblivion.

It’s a video about a Canadian startup that’s working on scaling up a process for the chemical recycling of plastic.
Just recycle it in an incinerator.
STICK THIS IDEA UP YOUR ASS FILTHY LIBERALS…The dirty crusty sharp recycled part first.
The world is burning and these retards talk about plastic.
Unless China and India, both FILTHY, lead by example, BUZZ OFF with your stupid ideas.
Who gave these POS the idea that they get to tell s how to live?
Even a KING with unlimited Power has NEVER done this.
Burn it all down
The Green ideologues at it again. We should replace plastic with wood, goes well with the swindlemills and subsidy farms. We’ll be banging rocks together soon and there will be a tinder tax so we cannot start a fire. How’s those paper straws going, folks?
So, no plastic in cars? These liberals are so dumb they just may succeed in killing us all.
So the question is … why?
Plastic is not toxic, and does no damage in land fills, which we have plenty of space for. Plastics getting into the ocean and disrupting wildlife can be a problem, but solving that doesn’t require a general war on plastics. And I doubt that Canada contributes in any sigificant way to that problem anyway.
