Canadian taxpayers.

MPs will get an $8,500 raise on April 1, increasing the base salary to $203,100, ranking only behind the U.S. in political salaries

Mail & Guardian- No perks for Swedish MPs

Without official cars or private drivers, Swedish ministers and MPs travel in crowded buses and trains, just like the citizens they represent. Without any right to parliamentary immunity, they can be tried in a court of law like any other person. With no private secretaries at the door, their bare-bones parliamentary offices are as small as 8m2.

  1. It’s well past time for amending the constitution to restrict politician pay to 1.00 times the average income for all non-governmental workers.

Furthermore, there automatic increases of taxes or wages should be banned.

And all voters should have a say on politicians pay packages, every election.

    1. M.P’s should be restricted to two terms and since they are so well paid no pension will accrue

  2. Well, they’re gonna need it with that carbon tax increase, and all that Inflation
Plus they care so much more than you or I, right?
And just ask them; they’ll say they’re worth it
While thinking “Shut up serf, how dare you question your betters”

  3. If the Conservatives take power next election, they must NOT make the same mistake that Brian Mulroney made…..THEY MUST CLEAN HOUSE….absolutely ruthlessly and at light speed.

      1. It is already too late. It would take 10 consecutive such leaders in a row to right this ship and repair all of the damage done. And we know THAT will never happen, will not be PERMITTED to happen.

Senior wounded us and Junior delivered the coup de (non) grace. All that is left to do now is to enjoy the decline. I am glad that I am old.

        1. Totally agree……….I am glad I am in my 70’s and not starting out in my career………..little TURDO has sure messed up this country……………..Let’s start with GETTING RID OF THE CARBON TAX……….then we can work on everything else that needs fixing……….

  4. Think of it as a chef’s kiss before they depart. Hey, any Conservatives embarrassed by it all? I’ll wait.
Hi Michelle…I know hon, those back and forths to Okalahoma ain’t gonna pay itself.

      1. Can anyone apply?
I am perfectly educated and prepared to work behind my desktop job.

  5. That is insane!

There has to be a house-cleaning, and certain amount of (divine) retribution meted out after the next election. And I include people like the commies who have renamed Dundas Square in Toronto – so that it basically honours a slave trading tribe.

  6. Didn’t Trudeau Sr. say that most MPs were “nobodies 50 feet from Parliament Hill”?

  7. I’d rather diversity by paying 20 MPs $10,000/yr rather than 1 MP $200,000. Take it up to 7,000 MPs.
They can meet in an OHL arena.
Party control would be busted since almost nobody gets cabinet goodies and independent MPs would be plenty when your constituency is like a small town.

So today’s parties would never support such a threat to their corporate interests.

  8. I believe that there is to be a protest in Victoria at the Parliament Building on Monday at noon, can anyone here confirm that and if so instead of sitting on your keyboard let’s get out and attend, unless you’re too scared of getting called an insurrectionist and getting tossed in jail with your bank account frozen.

  9. Ban all full time politicians. MP should not be a career. $20k a year max. Going to need a real job. Serve the country, not yourself.

    1. Texas and some other US states limit the legislature to a three-month session every other year, with a possibility of short-lived emergency sessions to address specific critical issues that come up. If they don’t meet in a year, they don’t get any pay that year.

  10. Compare and contrast:

“Odd as it may sound to the many representatives of the people elsewhere, Sweden does not offer luxury or privileges to its politicians. Without official cars or private drivers, Swedish ministers and MPs travel in crowded buses and trains, just like the citizens they represent. Without any right to parliamentary immunity, they can be tried in a court of law like any other person. With no private secretaries at the door, their bare-bones parliamentary offices are as small as 8m2.”

“I’m the one who pays the politicians,” says Joakim Holm, a Swedish citizen. “And I see no reason to give them a life of luxury.”

Read the article, it gets better.

  11. Cromwell to the Rump Parliament:
“It is high time for me to put an end to your sitting in this place,
which you have dishonored by your contempt of all virtue, and defiled by your practice of every vice.

Ye are a factious crew, and enemies to all good government.

Ye are a pack of mercenary wretches, and would like Esau sell your country for a mess of pottage, and like Judas betray your God for a few pieces of money.

Is there a single virtue now remaining amongst you? Is there one vice you do not possess?

Ye have no more religion than my horse. Gold is your God. Which of you have not bartered your conscience for bribes? Is there a man amongst you that has the least care for the good of the Commonwealth?

Ye sordid prostitutes have you not defiled this sacred place, and turned the Lord’s temple into a den of thieves, by your immoral principles and wicked practices?

Ye are grown intolerably odious to the whole nation. You were deputed here by the people to get grievances redressed, are yourselves become the greatest grievance.

Your country therefore calls upon me to cleanse this Augean stable, by putting a final period to your iniquitous proceedings in this House; and which by God’s help, and the strength he has given me, I am now come to do.

I command ye therefore, upon the peril of your lives, to depart immediately out of this place.

Go, get you out! Make haste! Ye venal slaves be gone! So! Take away that shining bauble there, and lock up the doors.

In the name of God, go!”

    1. Well that was uplifting , even if we never see such conviction on our behalf. We can always hope if not for us , our kids that earned it.
      Thanks Nemo.

    2. Nemo, it was the best short speech ever given in the English language. We owe a great debt to Oliver in requiring that Parliament as well as the King are subject to the Law. Dismally we seem to have forgotten the lesson he tried to teach. The monarchy learned; the successors of Charles I never tried to step over the line ever again.

      1. He certainly showed a conspicuous talent for disciplined leadership. And many questioned his character, some even offering plausible grounds. I myself never met the man so I am reluctant to judge him further.

  12. Paying a lisping mental midget of a narcissist over 400,000 grand – not including the luxuries of his home, “cottage”, summer home and trips abroad – is like making Canadians eat their own shit.
Millions of Liberal voters are happy to eat their own shit.

    1. Canadians have been eating their own shit as well as all liberals shit since 2015, and apparently 27% of them are quite pleased with that

  13. But but but MPs & ministers have to paid lots, to attract the best and brightest! Look no further than a box checker, I mean a capable minority person like Anand and what she has done to, I mean for DND. Or Omar Alghabra, a towering intellect that replaced a mere astronaut as transport Minister.

    1. Ironically, one of the justifications for giving politicians generous pay and benefits is to prevent theft and selling influence. How’s that working out?

Canada is in desperate need of an anti-corruption squad (investigators, auditors, prosecutors and judges) that are completely independent from politicians.

      1. Absolutely correct, LC. It would appear that nostrum is dead on arrival now. As Arrivecan and a host of other events showed, old-fashioned political corruption has never been stronger in Ottawa now. What is very clear is that the offices of Attorney General of Canada and Minister of Justice need to be fully and completely separated. No other country allows a partisan politician to run the administration of the criminal justice system.

    1. Dagny, if we had been allowed to invest the same number of dollars that the government took from us for the CPP, I would have had triple the current monthly dollars I receive from the CPP.

  14. The old argument used to be that we need to pay officeholders well to attract the best people. I no longer think that’s working.

  15. This speaks more to the devaluation of the Canadian dollar. They know the real inflation numbers and are just keeping up with it.
